Anderson .Paak joins Club Shay Shay for a wide-ranging conversation about turning 40, fatherhood, music, creativity, and building a legacy across entertainment. The 9-time Grammy Award-winning artist opens up about balancing fame, family, and artistry while preparing for his upcoming K-Pop film and The Romantic Tour with Bruno Mars.
Anderson .Paak reflects on quitting smoking after making a deal with his mother, prioritizing his health, and wanting to be more present for his children as he gets older. He shares how the pandemic changed his perspective on life after years of nonstop touring and allowed him to reconnect with his son, who introduced him to YouTube culture, K-pop, and creators like MrBeast.
The conversation dives deep into music, artistry, and ownership as Anderson explains why he got a tattoo requesting that no posthumous albums be released after his death. He reflects on how artists like Prince protected their music and legacy by maintaining creative control and refusing to simply follow industry trends. Anderson also discusses the posthumous releases of Mac Miller, Pop Smoke, and Juice WRLD, explaining how difficult it can be when unfinished music is released without the artist’s direct vision, sequencing, or creative input. He praises the care taken by Mac Miller’s family and references how Pop Smoke’s music continued through collaborations with 50 Cent. Anderson also credits legendary producers and mentors like Dr. Dre for influencing the level of detail, perfectionism, and musical craftsmanship required to build a lasting catalog.
They discuss how artists make money in today’s music business through touring, writing, producing, and live performance. Anderson credits his Tiny Desk performance for elevating his career and explains how learning multiple skills helped him create opportunities beyond streaming revenue. He also breaks down the creation of Silk Sonic with Bruno Mars, their Las Vegas residency, and how DJing unexpectedly became another successful chapter of his career after meeting Vegas DJ Eddie McDonald. Anderson talks about performing at events like Coachella and the Met Gala.
Anderson shares lessons he’s learned about entrepreneurship, trusting the right team, and staying creative without chasing money. He reflects on his career, grinding through small venues and eventually reaching sold-out arenas with Bruno Mars. He also names artists he still hopes to collaborate with.
Also touches on gambling, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Formula 1, Las Vegas culture, and Anderson’s experience balancing multiple creative ventures, including Silk Sonic, No Worries, and DJ Pee .Wee, filmmaking, and directing his first feature film. Anderson explains how working with artists like Drake, J. Cole, Ari Lennox, JID, and the Dreamville collective shaped his journey, while also reflecting on the realities of fame, loyalty, business partnerships, and maintaining long-term relationships in the music industry.
