Episode 18: 14018 Brahms: A German Requiem, to Words of the Holy Scriptures, Op. 45 Dec 17, 2020
    Show notes

A German Requiem, to Words of the Holy Scriptures, Op. 45 (German: ''Ein deutsches Requiem, nach Worten der heiligen Schrift'') by Johannes Brahms, is a large-scale work for chorus, orchestra, a soprano and a baritone soloist, composed between 1865 and 1868. It comprises seven movements, which together last 65 to 80 minutes, making this work Brahms's longest composition. A German Requiem is sacred but non-liturgical, and unlike a long tradition of the Latin Requiem, A German Requiem, as its title states, is a Requiem in the German language. Show notes

The SATB choir and organ version of Maurice Duruflé's Requiem, Op. 9 was published in 1948 by the French firm Durand. It had been commissioned six years earlier under the collaborationist Vichy regime, but Duruflé was still working on it in 1944 when the regime collapsed and in fact did not complete it until the year of publication. The composer dedicated the Requiem to the memory of his father. Episode 15: 14015 Faure: Requiem in D minor, Op. 48 Dec 17, 2020
    Show notes

Gabriel Fauré composed his Requiem in D minor, Op. 48, between 1887 and 1890. The choral-orchestral setting of the shortened Catholic Mass for the Dead in Latin is the best-known of his large works. Its focus is on eternal rest and consolation. Fauré's reasons for composing the work are unclear, but do not appear to have had anything to do with the death of his parents in the mid-1880s. He composed the work in the late 1880s and revised it in the 1890s, finishing it in 1900. Episode 13: 14013 Victoria: Requiem Mass Dec 17, 2020
    Show notes

Tomás Luis de Victoria’s requiem mass for six voices, written in 1603 and published in 1605, is an absolute masterpiece from the Renaissance Period. It is one of a handful of large-scale works that enjoy mainstream appeal in the 21st century. For many, it represents what Renaissance polyphony is, what it sounds and feels like, and how expressive it can be. This work is heard best in a darkened room while you relax and let the music flow over and through you. This performance is by the CMD Grand Opera Company of Barcelona Chorus and is produced and conducted by Joana Filipe Martinez. Episode 125: 13125 Mozart: The 17 Church Sonatas Dec 17, 2020
    Show notes

Mozart composed 17 Church Sonatas between 1772 and 1780. These church sonatas are short single-movement pieces that were performed during a celebration of the Mass between the Epistle and the Gospel. Three of the sonatas include more orchestral scorings including oboes, horns, trumpets and timpani. However, the more common sonatas were scored for 2 violins and a continuo. All the sonatas were commissioned by the Archbishop of Salzburg and were meant to go with specific religious mass settings. Episode 124: 13124 Mozart: Ascanio in Alba, K. 111 Dec 16, 2020
    Show notes

Mozart’s “Ascanio in Alba” was commissioned by Empress Maria Theresa. Her son, who would be Emperor Joseph II (who is featured in the movie “Amadeus”) would remember Mozart very well 10 years later when Wolfgang comes to Vienna. This opera was composed for Empress Maria’s wedding of her third son, Archduke Ferdinand, and Princess Maria Beatrice of Modena. The wedding was held in Milan on October 15, 1771.
