    Show notes

In Havana, recording sessions are done a little differently. Musicians and producers gather at recording studios, where a well-stocked bar and ample Wi-Fi are available in the lobby. A sense of ease and relaxation permeates the air -- people gather not just to produce recordings, but to create art with each other in a communal music experience. Episode 55: 15055 Stas Namin: Centuria S-Quark Symphony Jan 13, 2021
    Show notes

For composer and legendary Russian art and music figure Stas Namin, the current state of the world points towards a trajectory of violence and dissonance, as humanity curiously turns from a collective to an individual mind. This dissonance, drama, and the cosmic cycle of breaking down and rebuilding is translated through the power of the LSO, in an epic performance born from a philosophical pondering of the state of humanity. Episode 53: 15053 Bach: Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248 Jan 13, 2021
    Show notes

The Christmas Oratorio (German: Weihnachts-Oratorium), BWV 248, is an oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach intended for performance in church during the Christmas season. It was written for the Christmas season of 1734 and incorporates music from earlier compositions, including three secular cantatas written during 1733 and 1734 and a largely lost church cantata, BWV 248a. The date is confirmed in Bach's autograph manuscript. The next performance was not until 17 December 1857 by the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin under Eduard Grell. The Christmas Oratorio is a particularly sophisticated example of parody music. The author of the text is unknown, although a likely collaborator was Christian Friedrich Henrici (Picander). Episode 50: 15050 The Lyrical Sounds of Amy Shaw Jan 13, 2021
    Show notes

Amy Shaw is our first musician, of ours, that we have ever featured. We discovered Amy while she was practicing in her apartment. Her 2nd story window was open and we could hear her from the street. Several people had gathered to listen to her and we asked if they came here often to listen to her. "Oh yes, we wouldn't miss it. Whoever it is, plays so beautifully." So we went up to her apartment and introduced ourselves. Amy has been playing trumpet since she was 8 years old and was working as a 2nd-grade teacher at the local elementary school in Galveston Texas. We hired her and promptly flew her off to Berlin to join up with Sylvia Wagner and the CMD German Opera Company of Berlin. We think after hearing her play, you will quickly understand why so many people gathered, under her window, to listen to her play. Episode 34: 17034 Handel: Solomon, HWV 67 Jan 13, 2021
    Show notes

Solomon, HWV 67, is an English oratorio by George Frideric Handel. The anonymous libretto – currently thought to have been penned by the English Jewish poet/playwright Moses Mendes (d.1758) – is based on the biblical stories of the wise king Solomon from the First Book of Kings and the Second Book of Chronicles, with additional material from Antiquities of the Jews by ancient historian Flavius Josephus. The music was composed between 5 May and 13 June 1748, and the first performance took place on 17 March 1749, with Caterina Galli in the title role at the Covent Garden Theatre in London, where it had two further performances. Handel revived the work in 1759. Purchase the music (without talk) at: http://www.classicalsavings.com/store/p1208/Handel%3A_Solomon%2C_HWV_67.html Your purchase helps to support our show! Episode 32: 17032 Glazunov: Raymonda, Op. 57 Jan 10, 2021
    Show notes

Raymonda is a ballet in three acts, four scenes with an apotheosis, choreographed by Marius Petipa to music by Alexander Glazunov, his Opus 57. It was first presented by the Imperial Ballet at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre on 19 January [O.S. 7 January] 1898 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The ballet was created especially for the benefit performance of the Italian ballerina Pierina Legnani, who created the title role. Among the ballet's most celebrated passages is the Pas classique hongrois (a.k.a. Raymonda Pas de dix) from the third act, which is often performed independently.
