Episode 47: 17047 Bennett: Victory at Sea Feb 07, 2021
    Show notes

Victory at Sea is a documentary television series about warfare in general during World War II, and naval warfare in particular, as well as the use of industry in warfare. It was originally broadcast by NBC in the United States in 1952–1953. It was condensed into a film released in 1954. Excerpts from the music soundtrack, by Richard Rodgers and Robert Russell Bennett, were re-recorded for record albums. The original TV broadcasts comprised 26 half-hour segments—Sunday afternoons at 3pm (EST) in most markets—starting on October 26, 1952, and ending on May 3, 1953. The series, which won an Emmy award in 1954 as "best public affairs program", played an important part in establishing historic "compilation" documentaries as a viable television genre. Episode 46: 17046 Donizetti: Elvida Feb 06, 2021
    Show notes

Elvida is a melodrama or opera in one act by Gaetano Donizetti. Giovanni Schmidt wrote the Italian libretto. The opera was written as a pièce d'occasion for the birthday of Queen Maria of the Two Sicilies. The choice of subject matter was no doubt intended as an elegant acknowledgment of the Queen's Spanish ancestry. Donizetti received a little financial reward for the work and, as a result, put the minimum of effort into its composition. Elvida was first performed on 6 July 1826 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, but it "made little impression on the audience". This opera was not performed again until 2004. Episode 36: 17036 Uncovered 1 Feb 05, 2021
    Show notes

Catalyst Quartet poses, “Over the course of time there have been many overlooked artists in classical music. It is important to acknowledge that we have not yet heard the whole story. Composers like Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Florence Price, and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson have contributed beautifully crafted work to the repertoire but are not widely celebrated because quality recordings and performances of their music are rare or non-existent. With our next recording project, we are helping to change this unfortunate reality.” Purchase the music (without talk) at: http://www.classicalsavings.com/store/p1211/Uncovered_1.html Your purchase helps to support our show! Episode 1: 16001 MUSICAL IMAGES FOR CHAMBER ORCHESTRA, Vol. 1 Feb 04, 2021
    Show notes

This is a 1-track sample of this album. When Mark John McEncroe is asked what kind of music he composes, his reply invariably is "I don’t know, I just write it." It's a clever answer: at first glance, it is humble and modest, but it also reveals a considerable degree of naturalness, authenticity, and intuition. The same can be said for McEncroe's music, which is unapologetically evocative and driven by sentiment, with long lyrical lines and pleasant harmonies. The neo-Romantic style of orchestration which McEncroe intuitively employs fits his ideas perfectly. Episode 201: 15201 Dreamers Feb 04, 2021
    Show notes

This is a 1-track sample of this album. In 2016, composer and pianist Jeffrey Jacob conducted interviews with children of illegal immigrants, whose plight ended up inspiring the pianist's fifth symphony. Remarkably for a contemporary composition, the work is quite condensed timewise; nevertheless, it packs the whole gamut of human sentiment, with the movements titled I. Lagrimas [Tears], II. Fear; Grace, and III. Separation, Grief; Resolution, Triumph. Purchase the music (without talk) at: http://www.classicalsavings.com/store/p1238/Dreamers.html Your purchase helps to support our show!
