    Episode 59: 17059 Mutual Aid Music Apr 16, 2021
    Show notes

Trumpeter and composer Nate Wooley releases Mutual Aid Music, a double-CD of eight ensemble concertos. Mutual aid points to the concept of community action and the human drive to provide succor to our fellow humans. Mutual aid is the primary ethic of an anarchistic utopia in which each knows what they have, is honest about what they need, and is prepared to give and receive accordingly. Every human want is met by a commensurate surplus and all are lifted equally above suffering. Wooley’s Mutual Aid Music asks the musicians to take stock of their gifts and to ask themselves, in each moment, how their use of that gift will affect the community (ensemble) of which they are currently a member. 1. Episode 78: 17078 A Native Hill Apr 09, 2021
    Show notes

The long-anticipated follow-up to Gavin Bryars’ The Fifth Century, which won The Crossing its first GRAMMY award in 2018, the 12-movement A Native Hill was premiered by the ensemble in October 2019 at their home, The Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia. Wendell Berry’s text, from his 1968 essay of the same title, offers meditations on how life is, and can be, experienced, through detailed descriptions of the minutiae of rural existence, where simple natural events reveal themselves as metaphors for universal truths. Bryars has a close working and personal relationship with The Crossing, and draws on his intimate knowledge of the singers’ individual characteristics to create a further thoughtful and even more profoundly meaningful work for the ensemble. The New York Times has called Bryars’ music “accessible and defiantly personal,” and A Native Hill exemplifies his organic synthesis of sophisticated musical ideas with an earthy, insightful understanding of daily life. Episode 103: 17103 Prokofiev: The Love for Three Oranges, Op. 33 (complete opera) Apr 02, 2021
    Show notes

Restored from an out-of-print Melodiya master recording. The Love for Three Oranges, Op. 33, is a satirical opera by Sergei Prokofiev. Its French libretto was based on the Italian play L'amore delle tre melarance by Carlo Gozzi. The opera premiered at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, Illinois, on 30 December 1921. The original Italian and French titles actually mean The Love of the Three Oranges, which makes the word for in the English version of the title a slight corruption or mistranslation. Episode 100: 17100 Respighi: The Sunken Bell Mar 30, 2021
    Show notes

The opera La campana sommersa (The Sunken Bell) is Respighi's operatic masterpiece. A symbolist drama on a supernatural theme, it is steeped in beauty, mystery and foreboding, and orchestrated with the Romantic opulence familiar from his sumptuous trilogy of Roman tone poems. Its triumph at the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1928 was repeated at La Scala, Milan, and this most recent production at the CMD Grand Opera Company of Barcelona Spain, world-renowned for its staging of rarities, was hailed for its brilliant production and magnificent performances. Directed and Produced by Joana Filipe Martinez.
