    Episode 144: 17144 Verdi: Falstaff Aug 01, 2021
    Show notes

Verdi wrote Falstaff, which was the last of his 28 operas, as he was approaching the age of 80. It was his second comedy, and his third work based on a Shakespeare play, following Macbeth and Otello. The plot revolves around the thwarted, sometimes farcical, efforts of the fat knight, Sir John Falstaff, to seduce two married women to gain access to their husband's wealth. Episode 169: 17169 The Book of Rounds Jul 26, 2021
    Show notes

An exquisitely rhapsodic cycle of music, it is a transformative journey of consciousness—with lyrics that offer a new vocabulary of mantra. Originally composed as "modern mantras" or plain chants for listening or joining in, these epiphanic rounds, voiced a cappella, return us to the spiritual origins of all song- the merging of words and music to illuminate and elevate. Show notes

Centuries-old Chinese poetry is brought vividly to life in a new recording from Long Yu and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. We announce their second album for DG The Song of the Earth, recorded in Shanghai with soloists Michelle DeYoung, Brian Jagde, Zhang Liping, and Shenyang. It pairs Gustav Mahler’s symphonic song-cycle Das Lied von der Erde (“The Song of the Earth”), based on German translations of six ancient Chinese poems, with the world premiere recording of Xiaogang Ye’s settings of the same texts in the original Mandarin.
