The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness E. Orczy audiobook.

    Genre: adventure

In the throes of the French Revolution, Paris trembles under the ruthless judgments of the new regime, and the guillotine claims victims by the day. Across the Channel, London society gossips about politics and fashions, but whispers also spread of a daring mystery man: the Scarlet Pimpernel. Leaving a small red flower as his signature, this elusive hero leads a secret band devoted to rescuing condemned aristocrats from France, slipping through traps with wit, disguises, and audacity. Into this volatile world steps Marguerite St. Just, a brilliant French actress turned English lady, newly married to the wealthy and enigmatic Sir Percy Blakeney. Their marriage, strained by secrets and pride, becomes entangled with revolutionary intrigue when Marguerite is drawn into a dangerous game of leverage and betrayal - one that could expose the Scarlet Pimpernel and doom those he protects. As pursuit tightens on both sides of the Channel, alliances shift and every conversation may conceal a hidden motive. Part romance, part suspenseful adventure, this classic tale explores courage, identity, and the price of loyalty in an age when a single mistake can mean death.

The Amazons - A Farcical Romance by Arthur W Pinero ~ Full Audiobook [comedy] Jul 07, 2022
    Show notes

The Amazons - A Farcical Romance by Arthur W Pinero audiobook.

    Genre: comedy

In Arthur Wing Pinero's sparkling stage farce, the tranquil estate of the Marchioness of Castlejordan becomes a social minefield when her three daughters - Noeline (Noel), Wilhelmina (Willis), and Thomasin (Tommie) - reach the age when the outside world expects them to behave like proper young ladies. Their mother, having long insisted on sons, has raised them as her heirs: confident, athletic, and more comfortable with masculine freedoms than with drawing-room manners. Now, with gossip swirling and society calling, the sisters must perform a dizzying double life, switching from bold, boyish habits at home to ladylike decorum in public. Trouble arrives in the form of three determined gentlemen, each intent on courtship, and each more confused than the last by the sisters' unusual upbringing. As secret visits, overheard conversations, disguises, and well-meaning interventions pile up, the Castlejordan household becomes a whirl of misunderstandings, romantic sparks, and comic reversals. Beneath the laughter, Pinero playfully skewers rigid expectations about gender, class, and marriage - and asks whether growing up means choosing who you are, or who society demands you be.

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell ~ Full Audiobook [family] Jul 07, 2022
    Show notes

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell audiobook.

    Genre: family

Black Beauty is a fictional autobiographical memoir told by a horse, who recounts many tales, both of cruelty and kindness. The title page of the first edition states that it was 'Translated from the Original Equine by Anna Sewell.' It was composed in the last years of her life, during which she was confined to her house as an invalid. After its publication in 1877, Sewell lived just long enough to see her first and only novel become an immediate bestseller, as well as it encouraging the better treatment of many cruelly-treated animals.

Although initially intended for people who work with horses, it soon became a children's classic. While outwardly teaching animal welfare, it also contains allegorical lessons about how to treat people with kindness, sympathy and respect. The story is narrated in the first person and each short chapter relates an incident in Black Beauty's life, with Sewell's detailed observations and extensive descriptions of horse behaviour lending the novel a good deal of verisimilitude.

The Consolation of Philosophy by Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius ~ Full Audiobook [philosophy] Jul 07, 2022
    Show notes

The Consolation of Philosophy by Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius audiobook.

    Genre: philosophy

Consolation of Philosophy (Latin: Consolatio Philosophiae) is a philosophical work by Boethius written in about the year 524 AD. It has been described as the single most important and influential work in the West in medieval and early Renaissance Christianity, and is also the last great work that can be called Classical.

Consolation of Philosophy was written during Boethius' one year imprisonment while awaiting trial, and eventual horrific execution, for the crime of treason by Ostrogothic King Theodoric the Great. Boethius was at the very heights of power in Rome and was brought down by treachery. It was from this experience he was inspired to write a philosophical book from prison reflecting on how a lord's favor could change so quickly and why friends would turn against him. It has been described as “by far the most interesting example of prison literature the world has ever seen.”

The Consolation of Philosophy stands, by its note of fatalism and its affinities with the Christian doctrine of humility, midway between the heathen philosophy of Seneca the Younger and the later Christian philosophy of consolation represented by Thomas Aquinas.

The book is heavily influenced by Plato and his dialogues (as was Boethius himself)

Plague Ship by Andre Norton audiobook.

    Genre: scifi

When young cargo apprentice Dane Thorson signs on to the battered free trader Solar Queen, he expects hard work, tight margins, and the chance to prove himself among a small crew of tough, independent spacers. Captain Jellico and his officers run a disciplined ship, but the Solar Queen survives by taking risky contracts and hunting profits on the fringes of regulated trade. On an unfamiliar world, a routine pickup turns into catastrophe: something deadly and unseen follows the crew back to their ship. Suddenly the Solar Queen is branded a danger, cut off from ports, and driven into quarantine by authorities who would rather destroy a threat than investigate it. With their livelihoods and lives on the line, Dane and the crew must hold the ship together under mounting fear, suspicion, and isolation, while searching for the source of the contagion and a way to clear their name. Plague Ship combines tight spaceship camaraderie, tense survival stakes, and the harsh economics of interstellar commerce, as one crew fights to stay free in a galaxy that can turn on them overnight.

Penguin Island by Anatole France ~ Full Audiobook [comedy] Jul 07, 2022
    Show notes

Penguin Island by Anatole France audiobook.

    Genre: comedy

In Penguin Island, Anatole France delivers a sly, sweeping satire of civilization by imagining a world where a well-meaning, half-blind monk accidentally baptizes a colony of penguins, forcing heaven and earth to decide what, exactly, these newly converted creatures are. Transformed into people and granted a history of their own, the penguins begin building a society complete with laws, property, religion, politics, and all the comforting myths and brutal contradictions that come with them. As generations pass, the island's chronicles trace the rise of institutions and ideologies, the ambitions of leaders and thinkers, and the everyday compromises that turn lofty ideals into convenient slogans. Along the way, France introduces a gallery of clerics, scholars, soldiers, financiers, and reformers who argue over truth and morality while pursuing power, prestige, and survival. Bitingly funny and unexpectedly tender, the novel uses its absurd premise to expose how nations invent their past, justify their injustices, and repeat their follies, even when they believe they are marching toward progress.

Memory - How to Develop, Train and Use It by William Walker Atkinson ~ Full Audiobook [self help] Jun 30, 2022
    Show notes

Memory - How to Develop, Train and Use It by William Walker Atkinson audiobook.

    Genre: self help

In Memory - How to Develop, Train and Use It, William Walker Atkinson turns an everyday mystery into a practical skill: the ability to remember clearly, quickly, and on purpose. Blending plainspoken instruction with the confidence of early 20th-century self-improvement, Atkinson breaks memory down into workable parts - attention, perception, association, and repetition - and shows how each can be strengthened through deliberate practice. Readers are guided through common obstacles such as mental wandering, weak concentration, and the frustration of names, faces, facts, and figures that refuse to stay put. Along the way, Atkinson offers structured exercises, simple methods for building vivid impressions, and strategies for organizing information so recall becomes more reliable under pressure. The book is designed for students, professionals, speakers, and anyone who feels that a better memory would unlock greater confidence and capability. More than a collection of tricks, it presents memory as a trainable habit of mind, inviting you to test the methods, measure your progress, and turn learning and recall into a repeatable advantage.

Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare ~ Full Audiobook [comedy] Jun 30, 2022
    Show notes

Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare audiobook.

    Genre: comedy

After a violent shipwreck scatters her family, Viola washes ashore in the strange country of Illyria, grieving and alone - and determined to survive. Disguising herself as a young man named Cesario, she enters the service of Duke Orsino, a nobleman consumed by longing for the aloof Countess Olivia. Orsino sends Cesario to plead his case, but the mission ignites a tangle of mistaken identities and divided loyalties: Olivia unexpectedly falls for Cesario, while Viola quietly falls for Orsino, trapped by the very disguise that keeps her safe. Meanwhile, in Olivia's household, witty servants and foolish would-be suitors fan the chaos into outright comedy, plotting pranks, forging letters, and turning social ambition into slapstick. As music, revelry, and sharp wordplay swirl through Illyria, characters wrestle with what they desire versus who they appear to be, and the line between romance and ridicule grows thin. Twelfth Night is a sparkling tale of love and illusion, where masks - chosen or forced - test friendship, dignity, and the courage it takes to be seen.

The Tempest by William Shakespeare audiobook.

    Genre: drama

Shipwrecked on a mysterious island, a band of nobles struggles to survive while unseen forces toy with their fate. The island is ruled by Prospero, the deposed Duke of Milan, who has lived in exile for years with his daughter Miranda. Gifted in scholarship and the arts of command, Prospero governs the wild landscape with the help of Ariel, an airy spirit bound to his service, and contends with Caliban, the island's resentful native who refuses to accept Prospero's rule. When a storm drives Prospero's old enemies ashore, he seizes the chance to confront betrayal, reclaim his stolen place in the world, and shape the future for Miranda. As separated survivors wander through strange sounds and illusions, alliances form and fracture: some plot to overthrow their leaders, others chase power they do not understand, and Miranda encounters love for the first time. Blending magic, political intrigue, romance, and sharp comedy, The Tempest explores authority and freedom, forgiveness and vengeance, and the cost of controlling other people's lives - all within a single, enchanted day.
