Warrior of Two Worlds by Manly Wade Wellman audiobook.

    Genre: scifi

Snatched from Earth and dropped naked into a roaring dust storm, a bewildered stranger staggers into the underground stronghold of a world called Dondromogon - a planet where only two thin twilight bands are habitable, forever battered by wind between a burning day side and a frozen night side. Captured at the gates, he can offer only one impossible story: he cannot remember his own name. But the defenders see something else in him. Their mystic Sporr insists the newcomer matches an ancient prophecy of Yandro, a Conquering Stranger destined to save their people from the Newcomers, ruthless invaders entrenched on the far side of the planet. Soon the stranger is dressed, honored, and pushed toward command - with Doriza, a bold officer of the guard, as both his escort and his sharpest test of trust. As political leaders like Gederr and the charismatic Elonie shape the legend around him, the stranger must navigate a society built on hard survival choices, a war fought through tunnels and polar chokepoints, and the nagging fear that his missing memories hide the real reason he was brought here. In a world that worships destiny, he must decide what kind of warrior he will become.

Venus Enslaved by Manly Wade Wellman audiobook.

    Genre: scifi

On the sweltering, perilous world of Venus, an Earthman named Planter finds his sentence turned into something far worse than prison: survival among alien jungles, strange predators, and rival powers that treat human life as a resource to be spent. Thrown together with two fellow convicts, the hard-edged Disbro and the unexpectedly formidable Max, Planter expects only heat, hunger, and a quick death. Instead, a sudden encounter with a deadly tentacled creature ends with an even stranger rescue - by Mara, a warrior of a fierce Amazon sisterhood whose weapons are as archaic as they are lethal. The Amazons have their own war to fight, and they see in Planter both a risk and an opportunity. Looming over everything are the Frogmasters of the Veiled Planet, a domineering force whose reach and cruelty threaten to enslave everyone caught in their shadow. Caught between cultures and armed with little more than nerve, improvisation, and uneasy alliances, Planter must decide what kind of man he will be on a planet where freedom is never given - it is taken.

    Mercenary by Mack Reynolds audiobook.

    Genre: scifi

In a future America that has traded civic duty for comfort, society is locked into a rigid nine-level caste system - and almost no one ever climbs. Joseph Mauser, born Mid-Lower and determined to become something more, has chosen one of the last remaining ladders: Category Military. But war is no longer a clash of nations. Under a universal disarmament pact that bans modern weaponry, the truly powerful settle their disputes in carefully regulated corporate 'fracas' - limited battlefields fought with old-tech guns, strict rules, and wall-to-wall television coverage. When a new fight brews between rival giants like Vacuum Tube Transport and Continental Hovercraft, Mauser signs on as a professional mercenary, weighing not just tactics and survival, but budgets, reputations, and the stock-share promises that can buy a higher place in the system. As he trains recruits from the lower castes, navigates eccentric aristocratic commanders, and confronts the strange mix of spectacle and real bloodshed, Mauser discovers that in a world of TV and tranquilizers, violence can be both entertainment and policy - and the price of ambition may be higher than any pay bonus.

Adaptation by Mack Reynolds ~ Full Audiobook [scifi] Feb 23, 2023

    Adaptation by Mack Reynolds audiobook.

    Genre: scifi

In 1960 when this was published, the Cold War was at its height. Communism and Free Enterprise (Democracy) were locked in a ferocious struggle to prove that their political ideology was the best form of government for human kind. No holds were barred in this fight; propaganda was poured forth by both sides in a constant push to be seen as better, more progressive, more productive. Nuclear war was a constant threat. I know, I lived through that time. Thankfully the world came through that stressful time without a hot war but the question was not really settled: which is the better system? This story explores that question. 'Hardly had man solved his basic problems on the planet of his origin than he began to fumble into space. Barely a century had elapsed in the exploration of the Solar System than he began to grope for the stars. And suddenly, with an all but religious zeal, mankind conceived its fantasy dream of populating the galaxy.'

War-Lords of the Moon by Linton Davies audiobook.

    Genre: scifi

On a routine Earth-Moon run, Flight-Commander Bruce Ross asks his navigator, Harrell Moore, a simple question about their star readings and gets a look of pure horror in return. Something is wrong in the heavens, and the answer points straight to the Moon. Summoned into a secretive lunar underworld of provinces, courts, and armed patrols, Ross finds a society in upheaval: a king dead, factions mobilizing, and whispers of a new war that could spill from the Moon to Earth itself. At the center of the chaos stands Lord Horta, a calculating visionary whose faith in omens masks a ruthless plan, and whose experiments promise weapons no fleet is prepared to face. Caught between rival leaders and uneasy allies, including the enigmatic Princess Illeria and the formidable Queen Boada, Ross must navigate lunar politics as carefully as vacuum and gravity. With rocket ships on alert, ray weapons flaring, and loyalty shifting by the hour, the mission becomes a race to expose a hidden arsenal and stop an interplanetary conflict before it ignites.

The Hemlock Avenue Mystery by Lily A. Long audiobook.

    Genre: mystery

In a quiet early-1900s neighborhood, a bitter public feud between two prominent attorneys suddenly turns deadly. After a heated clash in full view of witnesses, Warren Fullerton is found murdered, and suspicion falls fast on his courtroom rival, Arthur Lawrence. Percy Lyon, a young newspaper reporter assigned to cover the case, cannot shake the feeling that the obvious answer is the wrong one. Part admirer, part investigator, Percy begins chasing scraps of testimony, odd timings, and half-hidden connections that the police and the town gossips dismiss. Then he encounters a woman fleeing into the night and realizes the crime may involve more than professional jealousy. As rumors multiply, several women become entangled in the case, each linked to Fullerton and Lawrence in ways that complicate every simple theory. With few clear clues and reputations on the line, Percy must learn where his loyalty ends and the facts begin, pushing past social bias, misdirection, and his own assumptions to find the truth behind Hemlock Avenue's most unsettling secret.

Alice’s Adventures Underground by Lewis Carroll ~ Full Audiobook [fantasy] Feb 23, 2023
    Show notes

Alice’s Adventures Underground by Lewis Carroll audiobook.

    Genre: fantasy

This is the handwritten book that Carroll wrote for private use before being urged to develop it later into Alice in Wonderland. It was generously illustrated by Carrol and meant to entertain his family and friends. When a sick child in a hospital enjoyed it so much, the mother wrote him saying it had distracted her for a bit from her pain and led eventually to Carroll expanding the story. The Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat, on 4 July 1862, up the Isis with the three young daughters of Henry Liddell, (the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University and Dean of Christ Church) : Lorina Charlotte Liddell (aged 13, born 1849); Alice Pleasance Liddell (aged 10, born 1852); Edith Mary Liddell (aged 8, born 1853). The journey began at Folly Bridge near Oxford and ended five miles away in the village of Godstow. During the trip the Reverend Dodgson told the girls a story that featured a bored little girl named Alice who goes looking for an adventure. The girls loved it, and Alice Liddell asked Dodgson to write it down for her. He began writing the manuscript of the story the next day, although that earliest version no longer exists. The girls and Dodgson took another boat trip a month later when he elaborated the plot to the story of Alice, and in November he began working on the manuscript in earnest. To add the finishing touches he researched natural history for the animals presented in the book, and then had the book examined by other children—particularly the MacDonald children. He added his own illustrations but approached John Tenniel to illustrate the book for publication, telling him that the story had been well liked by children. On 26 November 1864 he gave Alice the handwritten manuscript of Alice's Adventures Under Ground, with illustrations by Dodgson himself, dedicating it as 'A Christmas Gift to a Dear Child in Memory of a Summer's Day'. Some, including Martin Gardner, speculate there was an earlier version that was destroyed later by Dodgson when he printed a more elaborate copy by hand.

Victory by Lester del Rey audiobook.

    Genre: scifi

The earth is undefended. A ripe, juicy, rich plum just innocently waiting for one of the many new and warlike civilizations in the nearby universe to reach down and pluck to plunder and rape. Well... undefended can mean many things. In this case, humans have colonized many worlds and found many surprisingly human like races among the stars. But when these human colonies are threatened and even viciously attacked by really alien civilizations, earth does nothing to help them. Earth, fat, rich earth sits back and lets her own colonies be practically wiped out, claiming a neutrality that seems a thin veil for cowardice and deceit. How this happens and the story behind the story is what this exciting story is all about.

Let em Breathe Space by Lester del Rey ~ Full Audiobook [scifi] Feb 23, 2023

Let em Breathe Space by Lester del Rey audiobook.

    Genre: scifi

On the way to Saturn, the space freighter Wahoo is packed far beyond anything it was built to carry. Dr. Pietro's expedition has crammed nineteen people into a ship designed for a handful, and five months of recycled air, bad food, and constant proximity have turned ordinary irritations into open hostility. Narrated by Paul Tremaine, the journey quickly becomes more than a test of engineering and endurance when small mishaps start to look like sabotage. A poisoned atmosphere and failing hydroponics threaten the crew's most basic lifelines, and a sudden death makes it clear that the danger is not only mechanical. Trapped in a sealed world where every breath is accounted for, Tremaine must cut through rivalries, paranoia, and the crew's fraying nerves to figure out who is turning the mission into a nightmare. Let 'Em Breathe Space! blends classic space adventure with a tightly wound, closed-room mystery, asking how quickly civility collapses when survival depends on the people you can no longer trust.

What I Believe by Leo Tolstoy ~ Full Audiobook [religion] Feb 22, 2023

What I Believe by Leo Tolstoy audiobook.

    Genre: religion

'The inner working of my soul, which I wish to speak of here, was not the result of a methodical investigation of doctrinal theology, or of the actual texts of the gospel; it was a sudden removal of all that hid the true meaning of the Christian doctrine – a momentary flash of light, which made everything clear to me. It was something like that which might happen to a man who, after vainly attempting, by a false plan, to build up a statue out of a confused heap of small pieces of marble, suddenly guesses at the figure they are intended to form by the shape of the largest piece; and then, on beginning to set up the statue, finds his guess confirmed by the harmonious joining in of the various pieces.
