This week has been tough — and it’s only Wednesday. From the Club Q mass shooting in Colorado Springs to a senseless shooting in our own city this weekend, our community is on edge. How Park City Plans to House Its Workers Nov 22, 2022
    Show notes

Some would argue that the affordability crisis in Park City has been raging since the ‘02 Olympics, making housing out of reach for many local workers. That means a lot of them are actually our neighbors in Salt Lake!

Last week, host Ali Vallarta talked to journalist Gloria Liu about how to save a ski town. Today, we zoom in on Park City with KPCW reporter Parker Malatesta –– because there are some very interesting housing projects on the table.

Water Lessons From Las Vegas Nov 21, 2022
    Show notes

As we round out yet another dry year in Utah, our neighbors in Vegas have made Salt Lake news recently for their strict water policies.

It’s not the first time we’ve eyed them with conservation envy.

When John Oliver railed on Utah’s water consumption this past summer, he told us he wished we were more like our sister: Las Vegas. When did the city of excess become the city of conservation? And what can Salt Lake learn? City Cast Las Vegas Lead Producer Sonja Swanson joins host Ali Vallarta to share ideas.

This episode first aired on July 6, 2022.

How Far Has Representation In Utah's Art Scene Come? Nov 17, 2022
    Show notes

Artist Ruby Chacón is a self-proclaimed “Utahna.” The Chicana artist and founder of Salt Lake’s Mestizo Institute of Culture and Arts has spent her career challenging the mostly white art world with her portraits and murals. As Salt Lake’s gallery scene is embroiled in a controversy of racial representation, arts journalist Bianca Velasquez joins host Ali Vallarta to examine how Ruby Chacón’s legacy continues to kick-down doors.

It’s Not Impossible for Utahns To Win the Lottery Nov 16, 2022
    Show notes

A lucky Californian recently won the record-setting $2.04 billion Powerball. But if Salt Lakers even wanted a chance at that money, they really had to work for it. Utah is one of five states that doesn’t sell lottery tickets, and gambling of any kind is banned here. That means we’re hopping in the car for a road trip to an Idaho gas station in the hopes of buying a life-changing lotto ticket.

It’s a longshot — but it’s not impossible for one of us to win.

Like Samora Magadla, a local flight attendant who scooped up winning tickets twice. Samora joins host Ali Vallarta to answer the usually hypothetical question: What would you do if you won the lottery?

How to Save Park City Nov 15, 2022
    Show notes

The resorts are opening, the snow is accumulating, and our local ski towns are trying to survive their worst instincts. Last November, freelance journalist Gloria Liu asked How to Save a Ski Town in Outside magazine. One year later, host Ali Vallarta asks Gloria if there is still hope for mountain towns, and which creative solutions are proving their might.

Can a True Crime Show Be Ethical? Nov 14, 2022
    Show notes

Nowadays true crime is inescapable. Whether it’s Netflix's latest doc-series or a podcast relaying the details of a grizzly murder — Utah has become a hotspot for these stories. But can a market that re-victimizes and exploits grief be ethical? Host Ali Vallarta asks former crime journalist (and former sports reporter!) Amy Donaldson, host of the mega-popular KSL podcast “The Letter.”

Election day is over but the ballots persist! As county clerks continue their herculean effort to update the latest midterm results, host Ali Vallarta talks with former Salt Lake County Councilmember Shireen Ghorbani about the local nail biters, the moderate grind, and weirdly personal judicial reviews.

The GSL Could Lose 100,000 Gallons Per Minute Nov 10, 2022
    Show notes

Everyone is trying to save the Great Salt Lake from becoming a puddle and an ecological wasteland. But a plan by US Magnesium, LLC, could put a wrench in those eforts. Host Ali Vallarta talks with Alex Veilleux, a policy associate at HEAL Utah, about the potential impacts of siphoning 100,000 gallons of water per minute out of the GSL — and why it’s not too late to prevent it from happening.

Attend the public comment writing workshop tonight, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. on Zoom.
