Driving Accountable Care Through Analytics Jul 18, 2012
    Show notes

Ideally, healthcare providers should avoid unnecessary admissions and readmissions and work instead to improve their patient population's health and hospital experience. This may require getting timely, high quality metrics on factors such as emergency room efficiency, cost management, patient flow, staff productivity, clinical outcomes, efficacy of treatment, and "Meaningful Use". This, in turn, would require high quality, near real time, highly actionable analytics which will be delivered leveraging state of the art operational, clinical, and financial analytics platforms. Are we just getting started with these platforms or riding the maturity curve? What related people, process, and technology challenges will have to be overcome before accountable care can be delivered consistently and reliably?

The CIO as Ball Coach! Jun 20, 2012
    Show notes

Isn't running an IT department just like coaching a ball team? You have your team run every day to build their endurance and to keep them in peak condition. Each player must be a top performer, regardless of his/her position, and be ready to fill-in other positions if needed. Every team member must love the sport and be committed to keeping the ball in play, doing whatever is necessary to win. How well are today's IT leaders playing coach? What additional gamesmanship can an IT leader pick up, to better play the increasingly complex business/IT ball game?

Holding a Mirror up to IT May 23, 2012
    Show notes

Good intentions aside, IT leaders often end up delivering what they think they know best. Where they have gaps in their experience it's not unreasonable to invite consultants. The real issue is when executive management or stakeholders attempt to solicit 3rd party opinions about how IT is doing and perhaps call for an audit. When this happens, CIO's along with their direct reports can become defensive and territorial. Why is that? Why do so few organizations request voluntary external IT audits? Is it a bad idea to occasionally hold a mirror up to the CIO and the IT organization? Why couldn't this be used as a tool to get better at creating value? Aren't we still just following old auditing ways that focused on operational efficiency or are we ready to develop newer frameworks that help IT to focus on top line growth with better alignment to the business?
