    Episode 575 - MT. Thelonious Aug 04, 2014
    Show notes

MT. THELONIOUS knew they wanted to pay tribute to their mutual influence, American jazz legend Thelonius Monk. Though their sound is rooted the sounds and melodies of indie folk, they share the values and inventive energy of their namesake. Mt. Thelonious' shows are characterized by their originality, spirit, and flair for improvisation. Monk once wrote, "a note can be small as a pin or as big as the world, it depends on your imagination"-listening to the band's unique sound, it's clear that Mt. Thelonious has taken this to heart. In 2013, the trio collaborated with Grammy Award nominated recording engineer Adam Long, and produced their self-titled debut album. Since then, Mt. Thelonious has embarked on several national tours, cultivating growing fan bases in a number of US cities. The band has plenty of touchstones in the past, drawing heavily from folk, jazz, and rootsy, Americana traditions—yet what makes them truly unique is their ability to craft something new from these references while still evoking them. As Mt. Thelonius continues to tour and immerse themselves in America's rich musical landscape, there's no doubt their sound will only continue to expand and deepen.MT. Thelonious Podcast Videos

    Episode 574 - The Fox & The Hounds Aug 01, 2014
    Show notes

Chicago's only Burlesque Rock N' Roll Band! The Fox The Hounds For any band, it's terrifyingly easy to get lost in the shuffle, especially in a city as vast as Chicago. Setting yourself apart, or even finding kinship with other like-minded acts, are tough tasks with all the booking and promotion that needs to be done. But from the start, it seems The Fox The Hounds have never had such issues. Self-billed as "Chicago's only burlesque rock n' roll band," the area sextet create seductive and sensual sounds with elements of high-drama classic rock, baroque chamber pop and cabaret-style performance. There truly is nothing like them in the Windy City, and upon the release of their debut album, they're well on their way to making their mark.I absolutely fell in love with this band. The are a joy to behold.Members Kendel Lester- Vocals, Songwriter Tony Panico - Drums Crystal Corinne - Vocals Mike Sviokla - Guitar Ira Ochs - Bass Conrad Lipsitz - GuitarThree videos from their Podcast

    Episode 573 - Tonos Triad Jul 26, 2014
    Show notes

Tonos Triad came in to record a Podcast back in April before we presented them that night at one of the CAU/Mayne Stage Showcases. As you will hear, they are brilliant and I have attached the video of their concert performance for your pleasure.Formed in the late fall of 2006, Indianapolis-based trio Tonos Triad has continued to push beyond the boundaries of genre. The Triad is currently made up of upright bassist Aaron Ransdell, guitarist Luke Stanley on nylon strings, and accordion / mandolin player, Rod Schindler, who also plays a makeshift drum kit consisting of a suitcase and cardboard box, played with brushes. Though primarily an acoustic band that centers their sound on complex and euphoric melodies, they can shock listeners by plunging into the intense realms of avant-garde ferocity before settling down into hard groove. If one were to try to compare Tonos Triad's music to anyone else, Astor Piazzolla or John Zorn might come to mind, however, being that their sound is so diverse it is almost impossible to label them under the school of any one master. They seem to be an enigma that wanders on the outskirts of genre and classification yet, enters the listener to pluck their heartstrings with subtle notes weaved with pop nostalgia and the dark unknown.

    Episode 572 - Model Stranger Jul 21, 2014
    Show notes

Model Stranger – made up of Stephen Francis (vocals/guitar), Kevin James (Bass) and Vincent Joseph (Drums) is the epitome of a DIY band. This rock trio has worked the Midwest scene very diligently with an impressive list of successful regional tours. In addition to sharing the stage with popular national acts such as Candlebox, Our Lady Peace, Local H, Neon Trees and Ours, Model Stranger has performed at famous Midwest clubs such as; The Metro, Congress Theater, Double Door, Radio Radio and Cubby Bear. Notable festival appearances include Taste of Chicago , Taste of Linclon, Oranje Indy, Guinness Oysterfest and I AM Fest. After the band's debut release in 2010 Dreams Bones charted on CMJ stations the band hit the road playing over 150 shows in their first 18 months together. Amidst regional touring Model Stranger spent the following two years in and out of the studio working on songs and additional material for their follow up release. Taking less of a live approach into the studio yielded exciting results as the band made a point to explore a more "Model" side of their musical sensibilities on their 2013 release, The Changing Score. An EP showcasing the "Stranger" side of their palette is scheduled to follow later this year.

    Episode 570 - Scott Pemberton Jul 06, 2014
    Show notes

Scott Pemberton is a Portland native and has supported himself solely with the guitar since the age of 19. Until recently, he followed the customary path of playing sessions, teaching lessons and performing in lots of bands. Not long ago he had an encounter with death that changed that path entirely. The incident is a blur. Two years ago, bike met car. Doctors said Pemberton was unlikely to live. If he did, he might never speak again. Days later, Pemberton snapped to. After time, he started to play music again. He saw his path. When Scott returned to playing the guitar it was as if he had been reborn, playing with a new focus of intensity and joy that can only come from someone who has faced death. He returned to intense practice from a beginners mind, as though he hadn't played the guitar before, redefining how he approached music and the instrument. The mastery of his guitar playing combined with the fun recklessness of his songwriting show that the rules of songwriting and playing the guitar no longer exist for him. Scott plays with the uninhibited joy and intensity of someone who recognizes that every time time we make music is an honor and a gift. Episode 569 - Elli Perry and James Maple Jun 29, 2014
    Show notes

Elli Perry (CAU Episode 545) returned to us in November of last year with fellow songwriter James Maple. We promptly enjoyed an afternoon of beautiful songs along with just a few shots of Whiskey for good measure.Elli and James are both quintessential examples of today's version of the singing troubadours of the Sixties. They both spend significant portions of their lives "on the road". They recognize the sacrifices that this path in life requires, but they also know the joy of sharing their thoughts and emotions through their music performances. We all need to understand this sacrifice and applaud them and by way of purchasing their music when we see them live, or from their websites. You can view four of their songs from this show at CAU's Vimeo site
