    50 Years of Chelsea: 2000-2001 Pt 1 Jun 06, 2022
    Show notes

Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Mark Meehan to look back at Chelsea's 2000-2001 season.

After another FA Cup winning season and an encouraging debut in the Champions' League, Chelsea supporters expectations were set high for the 2000-2001 season. Could we finally have a crack at the Premiership?

Signing strikers Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen and Croation midfielder Mario Stanic and victory over Man Utd in the Charity Shield and beating West Ham 4:2 in the first Premiership match with Stanic scoring a goal of the season contender, augered well. But five matches later, popular (with the fans anyway) manager Gianluca Vialli was sacked and replaced by Claudio Ranieri, with rumours of players plotting behind the scenes to get Vialli out.

Ranieri's reign started with the brilliant 3:3 draw against Man Utd at Old Trafford with Hasselbaink's exocet strike the stand out, but Di Matteo breaking his leg in the 1st round UEFA Cup defeat to St Gallen and the Worthington Cup defeat to Liverpool meant that by November Chelsea were out of two cup competitions and had only recovered from 16th position in the league to 10th.

November was a horrendous month with the team struggling with adapting to Ranieri's tactics and rotation, as well as injuries to key midfield players. Of the 5 matches played Chelsea lost 4 and drew 1. For all intent and purpose, the league campaign was over before it began, but could Chelsea still challenge for the european places?

The only bright spots in the season so far had been the superb goal scoring form of Hasselbaink and Gudjohnsen and the emergence of midfielder Sam Dalla Bonna and a certain young John Terry.

Chelsea FanCast Special #904 'For Better Or Worse' May 27, 2022
    Show notes

Stamford Chidge interviews Jason Gibbins to talk about his book 'For Better Or Worse: Life, Love and Supporting Chelsea in the 1990's'.

Jason Gibbins talks about his book, 'For Better Or Worse'. Engagingly written and laced with wry wit and pathos, 'For Better Or Worse' follows two paths as it tells the story of life, love and Chelsea in the ‘90s. Two roller coaster rides for the price of one! The first tracks each full season of the decade as the London club progress from mid-table mediocrity to a team competing on the European stage. The second, meanwhile, focuses game-by-game on the progression of the Blues 1997 FA Cup campaign; a campaign of additional significance for Jason thanks to a rash promise to propose should his beloved team win the trophy.

“It has been 27 years since we last won it,” Jason said at the time, “so the odds are stacked in my favour.”

'For Better Or Worse' can be purchased from Gate17Books or from Amazon.

Chelsea FanCast Special #901: 'Out of the Blue' May 19, 2022
    Show notes

Stamford Chidge interviews Gary Thacker, author of a new book focusing on Chelsea's extraordinary Champions' League campaign of 2012, culminating in the club's first European Cup trophy.

By the early months of 2012, it was clear that the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas as head coach at Chelsea wasn't delivering the required success. Instead, the club was spiralling towards its worst season of the Roman Abramovich era. On 4 March, Villas-Boas was dismissed, with his former assistant Roberto Di Matteo made interim head coach until the end of the season. Struggling in the league and with their place in the Champions League in peril, it was an appointment designed to make the best of things until a permanent replacement could be sought in the summer. Instead, under Di Matteo's guidance, Chelsea embarked on a run of performances that not only led to an FA Cup triumph, but resurrected their European hopes with improbable victories over Napoli, Benfica and Guardiola's all-conquering Barcelona before, against all odds, winning the Champions League by defeating Bayern Munich in their own stadium. This is the story of a triumph that came out of the blue.

Out of the Blue is the extraordinary story of Chelsea’s recovery from a season seemingly in terminal decline and describes the story of how the club's worst season in more than a decade ended with ‘The greatest night in the history of Chelsea Football Club’ (Martin Tyler - Sky). It relates how Roberto Di Matteo took over a club in turmoil and delivered FA Cup and Champions League triumphs against all odds

The book picks up the story from Terry's tears in Moscow and takes it on, through various managers, to the triumph in Munich and tells the story of a team that was on the brink of elimination so many times, but survived to triumph.

It gives the details, plus many of the surrounding stories, of all Chelsea's Champions League games together with exclusive insight from interviews with celebrated journalists and authors in Portugal, Spain and Germany as Chelsea toured the continent in search of glory.

Out of the Blue relives the rollercoaster and emotionally draining events in Barcelona and Munich that almost defy belief and contains interviews with a collection of Chelsea fans, including Chelsea FanCast's Mark Worrall, as they followed the club's progress: their hopes, fears and, ultimately, celebrations.

Gary Thacker is an established author and journalist who writes for numerous magazines and websites, including The Guardian Sports Network and newspapers in Spain. He was shortlisted for Blogger of the Year by the FSF in 2017, and has guested on BBC and talkSPORT radio. A member of These Football Times' Senior Leadership Team, he also appears on podcasts and hosts the popular 'Political Football' series. This is his sixth book

Out of the Blue can be purchased from Amazon, around the world, for £16.99 or cheaper using this link

“Making History & Reviling it” Chelsea FanCast #900 May 16, 2022
    Show notes

Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Marco Worrall and Mark Meehan to reflect on a bitterly disappointing FA Cup Final defeat by the smallest of margins last Saturday.

In part one we look at the shambolic start to the match for Chelsea and Chidge! With Liverpool only beating Chelsea on penalties after 7 hours of football, do Chelsea have a way to go to catch up or are the teams more evenly matched than most pundits admit? And did Chelsea pay the penalty for poor finishing?

In part two, wasTuchel hamstrung by the late injuries to Werner & Havertz and last minute withdrawl of Christensen? Which Chelsea players stood out? After 3 Cup final defeats in a row, which hurt most? How disappointing has the season been and was Saturday a classic example of a good day out with your mates, ruined by a football match or in this case a penalty shoot out?

In part three we have this week's emails and we wrap up the show in part four with a preview of Thursday night's Chelsea v Leicester match.
