Jana and Hal have spent what seems a lifetime facing obstacles that might seem to others to create an environment of hopelessness and despair. But with their faith in God and the help of their endless community of friends and family, they approach these challenges with the words “Why Not Me?” as opposed to “Why Me?” With almost twenty years of marriage behind them and the continued assurance they have found their soulmates, Jana and Hal are ready to share their story, their life dealing with cancer and the upbringing that gives them the strength to face each day.
Jana serves as the Executive Director for the Providence Foundation, leading the Foundation’s development and implementation of policies, procedures, and strategies for fundraising activities.
Prior to that, Jana served on the Ascension Texas Advocacy team as the Senior Director for Advocacy & External Affairs and as the Vice-President of Marketing and Communications at Providence.
A proud 1983 Texas Aggie, Jana enjoyed twelve successful years as the Director at the American Cancer Society, serving three areas across Central Texas – Waco, Temple and Killeen.
Hal is currently employed with Packaging Corporation of America after a successful career as President and Chief Financial Officer of Englander dZignPak, a Waco-based packaging and display company. In 2018, PCA acquired Englander after over 50 years of serving the Waco community and parts beyond. PCA provides shipping boxes, displays, retail boxes and packaging solutions to customers across the country from almost 100 locations across the United States.
A 1980 graduate of Baylor University, Hal spent almost thirty years in public accounting, from a large national firm, to a regional firm and finally to his own practice. He is a member of the TSCPA and the AICPA. He has also served on various committees on the state and local level and as chairman of the Central Texas Chapter of CPA’s.
Jana and Hal believe in giving time, talents and treasures back to the community. Hal has served as chairman of the boards of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the American Cancer Society, Leadership Waco, the Waco Foundation, Providence Healthcare Network, and the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce. A large amount of his time has been dedicated to Reicher Catholic High School, where both of their sons attended and to Providence Hospital, where he served for over 19 years on various committees.
Jana serves on several boards and committees, including Leading Waco Women, the Chamber’s Total Resource Campaign, Rotary Club of Waco, Prosper Waco. In addition, Jana spends time mentoring students in the Chamber’s LEAD program. In 2020, Hal and Hal chaired the annual American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women luncheon. Jana and Hal are proud members of First Methodist of Waco.
Most important in all Hal and Jana do, is their children. Jana and Hal are the proud parents of two boys and a wonderful daughter in law. Adam Whitaker, 34 lives in Oklahoma City and is controller for an electronics distribution company. Taylor Madden, 32 and his, wife Anna, live in Houston, with their growing family of dogs and cats, better known as Hal and Jana’s grandbabies “for now”.
