Revisiting Laurie Wagner Jul 12, 2023
    Show notes

Heidi is still out of the country on a wonderful family vacation. Ellen re-introduces today's episode- the 2021 interview with writing teacher Laurie Wagner.

Laurie is a Bay Area writer and writing teacher whose focus for the last 20 years has been Wild Writing, a super creative, loose writing practice that helps people get out of their heads and into the more intuitive, instinctual sound of their own voice.

In 2020 she gave birth to The Wild Family, a large group of people around the world who Wild Write together weekly. She recently made the big decision to stop teaching her live classes- both in person and online. But her Wild Family offerings as well as trips to Nepal and San Miguel de Allende are not going anywhere.

Of course, Ellen talks about what she is watching recently: the documentary Blackberry; the movie Showing Up; the first few episodes of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, the first few episodes of And Just Like That; and the season finales of Barry and The Last of Us.

Unmute Yourself with Ann Randolph Jun 14, 2023
    Show notes

Heidi and Ellen are thrilled to be in conversation with Ann Randolph, the award-winning playwright, performer, and pioneer in interactive theater. What makes Ann's work so special is that it touches upon the dark, messy, uncomfortable aspects of what it means to be human. Audiences leave Ann's shows feeling cracked open and cathartically transformed, like it's finally OK to share feelings they never thought they could share.

Her latest show, "What's Your Story," invites audiences on an audacious journey of hilarity and heartbreak, encouraging them to explore their own life narratives within the theater. With previous productions like "LOVELAND," which won multiple awards in San Francisco, LA, and Washington DC, Ann's work delves into themes of grief, offering writing workshops for healing and reflection.

She has also achieved success with solo shows such as "SQUEEZE BOX," produced by Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft, and has been recognized as a spoken word artist, with appearances on NPR and PBS. Her immensely popular "Write Your Life" workshops are held in cities throughout the U.S., with annual stops at renowned retreat centers like Kripalu, the Omega Institute, and Esalen.

As part of her dedication, she offers a daily online writing program called "Your Story Matters: Unmute Yourself," providing individuals with a platform to unleash their voices and share their stories with the world. Ann's next workshop begins on June 19th. You can sign up at annrandolph.com.

Revisiting Shannon Watts Jun 07, 2023
    Show notes

This week we revisit our interview with Shannon Watts, the founder and a full-time volunteer with the nation's largest grassroots group fighting against gun violence, Moms Demand Action.

We looked at the major career events in Shannon's life, starting from the fateful day, December 14th, 2012 when the heartbreaking and tragic school shooting took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Shannon was moved to reach out via a small Facebook post to other moms who were also outraged by the tragedy and the rest is history. With nearly 10 million supporters and a chapter in every state, Moms Demand Action and its partner, Everytown for Gun Safety, have stopped the NRA's priority legislation in statehouses roughly 90% of the time, and passed hundreds of gun safety laws across the country, changed corporate policies and educated Americans about secure gun storage. This grassroots movement helped break through the logjam in Congress and pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first gun safety bill in 26 years. Shannon is also active in recruiting and training women to run for office at all levels of the political spectrum. She was named one of Glamour's 2022 Women of the Year and her book, Fight Like a Mother: How a Grassroots Movement Took on the Gun Lobby and Why Women Will Change the World, was released in May of 2019.

Shannon's story reminds us that one person can make a huge difference in tackling what seems like insurmountable problems. Tell everyone if they want to make their voices heard about gun safety to text 64433 or go to the Moms Demand Action website (momsdemandaction.org) for ways to get in touch with your representatives.
