27 – Hosting game night Dec 06, 2018

Part 2 of a 3-part series about gaming at home.

I’ve found certain types of gamers tend to play more at their own homes, or their friends’ places: narrative gamers, the #funhammer beer-and-pretzels crowd, tight-knit gaming groups of close friends, women and people of color that might not feel comfortable at shops, etc. I rarely hear any mention of the special circumstances and situations that this type of gaming gives rise to, so I set out to record a few episodes to explore the topic.

In this, the second part, I lay out a few things to think about before you host your next game night. Some of it’s obvious, but some is not. Take a listen and let me know what you think in the comments below.

This is a special episode, outside of our normal format. The topic of gender diversity and inclusion has come up again this past week, and I decided to bring a couple friends onto the show to talk about it. We also talk a lot about race since there are so many parallels. I hope you’ll find this interesting, and if you don’t care for the topic or find it too political, feel free to tune in next week when we’re back to our series on gaming at home.

**17 – First Strike with first timers** Jul 21, 2017
Playing through the new 8th-edition starter set with a couple of novices.

I invited two of my buddies from work to spend an evening trying out a Warhammer 40K 8th-edition starter set, called First Strike. With an attractive price point ($40 in the US) and a handful of models on each side, it makes entry almost a no-brainer. Take a listen as we chat before and after playing through the missions. This episode is about twice as long as normal, but I think you’ll find it’s a pretty quick listen anyway.

A month has gone by and I’ve put some thought into the format of the show, on top of just being really busy in general. A month since our last episode, but somehow I’m still thinking about 8th Edition 40K. I wanted to do another show based on the full reveal of the Dark Imperium boxed set and novel.
