I am still evaluating that concept myself and so I present to you this interview so that you can hear his logic. Whether you agree or not, the only way to be able to make a decision or be able to look at the evidence is to understand the thinking behind it in the first place. The one thing that will make us strong explorers of chameleon husbandry is evaluating reasonable ideas and making decisions after careful contemplation. 115: Maintaining Your Chameleon Cage Jul 19, 2019

Once we set up a chameleon cage we need to maintain it and adjust if things are not correct. Today we will talk about tweaking your cage and keeping your chameleon happy.

So you got your cage, did your research, listened to this awesome podcast, and made a gorgeous garden of a cage that fulfilled the Forest Edge 4+4 method from podcast episode 114 perfectly. And then, you introduced the newest reptilian member of the family. What now? Well, I have to let you know that I have dived as deep as I can into how to take care of these little guys and I am only one of a number of people who have done so there is plenty of good information out there, but we are just learners. You have now brought the true master into your home. That is right. We must all bow before the authority of that 4 month old panther chameleon who knows chameleons 100 times better than the best of us.

Once you have your cage set-up and it hits all the numbers in the caresheet perfectly your next step is to throw away the care sheet. From this point on, you are going to adjust your cage based on the behavior of your chameleon. Caresheets are general numbers that have generally worked. You are working with a specific chameleon in your specific room environment. So, the caresheets are not wrong. But view them only as a starting point to get everything set-up. This is the third module in a three part podcast series. It started with episode 113 which helping understanding how to select the right cage type and continued to episode 114 where I introduced the Forest Edge 4+4 method of putting together an effective chameleon cage. I am going to close it off in this episode by addressing how you interpret your chameleon’s behavior to refine the details. Every chameleon will be different. And they may do the unexpected. We need to adjust to their particular comfort levels.

So let’s make use of that Forest Edge 4+4 method and look for behaviors and clues for each aspect to make sure our chameleon is happy.

In the first part of this series we talked about the natural history of Trioceros melleri and the housing strategy. Today we will talk about husbandry. And that is how you set up their cage to replicate the conditions they need as well as nutrition. Our three breeders are back to help us get started in the right direction. Dale Tamura from the United States, Martine Desjardins from Canada, and James Killey from the United Kingdom share their hard won elements of success.

To start off, I’d like to say that much of what we go over is the same husbandry that you would perform for any chameleon. We are going to start at the beginning so we are comprehensive. But it won’t be long before some of you who have been around for a bit will start thinking that this care information sounds suspiciously similar to the care information I share about just about any other chameleon species. And that is because Meller’s Chameleons are….chameleons. Just like most other chameleons, once you dial in the basics the difference between species is just some subtle shifts. Tweak day time humidity and set the right night and day temperature levels and figure the appropriate UVB levels you’ve taken care of the bulk of the species available to us. That said, we are going to start at the beginning and work our way forward.

This expedition explores Montagne d'Ambre, a mountain in the northern tip of Madagascar. Although it is a popular tourist destination, only the entrance to the national park has been well studied. The peaks and other side of the mountain are new to herpetological science. And this is where Mark takes us. We will listen to field reports, frog calls and nature's sounds directly from Madagascar in this episode series!

In this second part of the podcast series, we join Mark on the Eastern side of Montagne d'Ambre as he continues his studies. His purpose is to determine how much the change in environmental conditions due to elevation develops different species.

96: Rescuing an MBD Chameleon with Cheryl Garcia Aug 24, 2018

Metabolic Bone Disease is a terminal condition. But, if caught in time, the chameleon’s life can be saved. Today we talk about living life with a special needs chameleon.

Cheryl Garcia runs the reptile section of an animal rescue called Another Chance Sanctuary in the state of Ohio. Her daily duties are to manage the rescues when she is not traveling across the country picking up reptiles too sick to ship. One thing she sees on a consistent basis is Metabolic Bone Disease. If you have been following our series on MBD you know this is a condition where the body does not get enough calcium. The most visible effect of this is rubbery bones and the degrading of the skeleton structure. It is a painful condition and, by time the inexperienced keepers gets the clue that something may be wrong, the chameleon could have gone through multiple bone breaks and jaw disfigurement. The point the keeper decides to get veterinary help, or give it to a rescue, plays a great factor in what the rest of this chameleon’s life will be like.

Today, I talk with Cheryl about what life is like when you take on caring for a chameleon that has suffered from MBD in the past. MBD can be stopped and calcium levels can be replenished and the body will do an amazing job with healing. But there is only so much that the body can do. Unfortunately, disfigurement of the legs and jaw are permanent. So what is life like with an MBD chameleon? We bring Cheryl on and find out.

Good morning Chameleon Wranglers! It is time for an update as to what is going on with the podcast!

Good morning Chameleon Wranglers! It is time for an update as to what is going on with the podcast! This isn’t an episode per se. It is just a short update to let you know I am working hard on season three! I haven’t just migrated to Madagascar for the winter! We have this break because I am substantially increasing what this podcast will offer. In season three I will have video companion episodes to the podcast. You will still get the podcast which can keep you company into work or during the cage cleaning days, but you will also be able to come home, and see a companion video which gives a visual to the topic. I am estimating that the new season will launch in January. I have been having a great time recording interviews and video for this new season and look forward to sharing them with you. We are going to be taking a close look at handling your chameleons, the ecology of the veiled chameleon, and chameleon anatomy. We’ll get a better feel for supplements, plants in the chameleon cage, and even how we in the hobbyist community can effectively perform some citizen science to push our collective knowledge further. I intend for this new format to be well worth the wait!

So, while I am arranging simultaneous interviews across three continents, massaging those video transitions, and trying to coax the why out of these topics, enjoy the holidays, your family, and that mini-tree dragon that makes our lives border on the fantastic! The is a timely subject as the Northern latitudes are heading into winter snow storms and for some of us, it is a good idea to start raising our own feeders just in case the mail delivery service is not able to reach you. But even if you are not in danger of being snowed in, raising your own feeder is a great way of controlling the nutrition that your chameleon gets. Superworms are the perfect feeder to work with because they are easy to breed and raise up. They also are one of the few feeders that can, at different times during their lifecycle, feed anything from baby chameleons to adult parson's chameleons! So Superworms are a versatile feeder as well as being easy!

If you do it right, the worst that will happen is that you’ll feel a low grade stress and your chameleon is still sitting on his same branch, a couple grams heavier, looking at you when you walk back in the door.

Today’s episode 002 is titled Surprise! Chameleon Babies!! Yay!...Yikes!! In honor of all the emotions we go through when baby chameleons hatch or are born. But, you ask, what is the Yikes in there for? Aren’t breeders all prepared for hatch date? Perhaps, but then there are the ones that are surprised by eggs hatching two months before estimated hatch date and then there are the livebearers that can give birth at any inconvenient time – such as 9 months after you have brought back a single female Jackson’s chameleon from the show with no intention of ever breeding her! You walk down the stairs one morning and instead of a nice cup of coffee waiting for you, you find a cage full of baby chameleons staring at you and one tired momma. Whoa! Talk about needing to find an accelerated crash course in baby chameleon care! I can't say we will cover everything here, but we will touch on the important parts and make sure you are off to a good start!

How do we make for a content chameleon? The answer is to create not only microclimates, but also gradients between those microclimates. We want to give our chameleons the most choices in temperature, humidity, UVB, and privacy as possible. Welcome to the Chameleon Breeder Podcast. In this introductory episode I’ll introduce myself, this podcast and give you an idea of what is going on here.

This podcast is about the science art of chameleon keeping - and everything that goes with successfully maintaining these amazing creatures. They may not breath fire, but these are our modern day dragons. So this podcast is for the modern day dragon wrangler. You are working the normal everyday 21st century life, but when you come home and look into that cage or walk into the reptile room you are transported to another fantastic world. That is how it is for me and this is what we will be talking about.

My name is Bill Strand and chameleons have been a part of my life for coming on four decades now. It all started with a passion for dinosaurs and I, luckily, never grew out of that wonder. I have been a hobbyist, a small scale breeder, a large scale breeder, and an educator in the community. Through this podcast I will bring together major topics and experts in the field.

I have done many crazy things in my chameleon adventures and if I haven’t done it I am sure I know someone who has! If you are a beginning chameleon keeper then this is the perfect place to get answers to the questions you didn’t think of asking. If you have been around for a while then maybe you can come away with a different perspective or else you can share yours with me. There is always room to grow and this podcast is my part in keeping the conversation going. We will truly never run out of corners to explore in this incredible world.
