2:56 - WELCOME TO THE CELTIC CHRISTMAS PODCAST

I am Marc Gunn. I am an Celtic musician and podcaster. We are promoting Celtic culture through Christmas cheer. This is the final episode of 2022.

Hopefully, we are all ready for the holiday. House and trees decorated. Presents wrapped and placed beneath the tree. The cats aren't chewing on the wrapping paper. We are ready to relax for this festive time of year.

Make sure you check out Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.

Christmas is an interesting time of year for musicians. Bigger artists are able to put together Christmas-themed shows. But many of the smaller indie artists create an album and dream of playing shows, but the venues stop booking. Christmas is a listening time of year. Not necessarily a buying time of year.

I tell you this to remind you to support the artists that you love in this show. Visit the shownotes to find out more about the artists at CelticChristmasPodcast.com. Then you can buy some music or merch from them, give them a tip, or even support your favorites on Patreon.

Music from We Banjo 3, Reilly, Caitríona O'Leary, Triskele, The Barra MacNeils

Welcome to the Celtic Christmas Podcast

I am Marc Gunn. I am a musician and podcaster. We are promoting Celtic culture through Christmas cheer.

I'm working on another new format for this show in 2022.

Galway-based We Banjo 3 has one foot in Irish music and one foot in Americana music, seamlessly combining the virtuosity and precision in each genre's traditional disciplines with the artful song-craft and infectious live performance of today's musical landscape.

This is their 10th year performing together to thousands of fans at Irish and Bluegrass festivals.

Their latest album is called Open the Road. And I'm happy I looked up that information because I can also add it to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast that I host.

0:53 - We Banjo 3 "Joy to the World" from A Winter Wonderful

3:40 - THANK YOU CHRISTMAS PATRONS

The Celtic Christmas Podcast is brought to you by the kindness of Celtic Christmas fans on Patreon. Your generosity funds the creation, promotion, and production of the show. Join others to spread Christmas Cheer this holiday season! Sign up for as little as $1 per episode on Patreon.

Winners of the folk rock/Celtic band of the year award by Wisconsin Area Music Industry for 2019 and 2015, Reilly have garnered a reputation for being an interactive, get-off-your-chair act.

The band's circuit continues to grow along with their reputation for being a highly respected professional group. National programs such as Good Morning Ireland, Blarney on the Air, and Paddyrock internet radio have featured Reilly. Celtic Radio Music Network rates them as five out of five stars. Their ability to adapt Celtic music to an American rock audience, and include unexpected rock favorites into their set, makes them the perfect eclectic choice in today's watered down and predictable Celtic scene.

Their latest album is called Durty Pool. You can find it on their Bandcamp page.

4:47 - Reilly "For You On Christmas" from Kick Ass Celtic Christmas

    8:13 - PLAYLIST: Christmas Drive

There a number of Celtic Christmas playlists that I published on Spotify. The Christmas Drive playlist is Christmas music you will enjoy while taking a holiday drive to see your family or friends.

The Wexford Carols is a 2014 album of traditional Irish carols by Caitríona O'Leary featuring guest singers Tom Jones, Rosanne Cash and Carolina Chocolate Drops singer Rhiannon Giddens and more. The album went to No.1 on the Billboard World Albums Chart.

8:52 - Caitríona O'Leary "Tell Shepherds" from The Wexford Carols

    15:16 - HOLIDAY FEATURE: Triskele

Triskele, [pronounced Tris-Kay-lee] is the premier all~female Celtic band out of Albany NY. They are known for their stunning harmonies, singing in the Gaelic language and for their Irish wit. Noeleen, who grew up in Dublin and is the youngest of 16, taught Sharon and Jenn the Gaelic language through song. These ladies perform, primarily, traditional Celtic/Irish music, but also have written originals. Triskele not only revitalizes the Gaelic language, but weaves history and traditions about growing up in Ireland. This gives the listener a deeper appreciation and understanding of Irish/Celtic history.

Triskele stands out in a Celtic music world dominated by men. They have gained fans and supporters with their ability to keep traditional songs traditional. Fans have stated that they enjoy hearing songs sung with the unique qualities of the female voice; given the timbre and rich, clear harmonies.

I'm particularly smitten with their byline–Celtic Trad. with a Women's Touch

Their song "Christmas Is a Comin'" is a new addition to the Celtic Christmas music world. But I'll let them tell you more about it.

16:24 - STORY OF CHRISTMAS IS A COMIN'

18:02 - Triskele "Christmas Is A Comin'" from Christmas Is A Comin'

Do you have a Christmas story to share? Drop me an email. Include a picture for our shownotes.

19:57 - WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE CELTIC CHRISTMAS SONG IN THIS EPISODE?

Make sure you add the song to your own Celtic music playlist or even better, support the artist by buying their music and joining their mailing list, or even joining their Patreon page. Several have that as well.

There's another way to share your favorite track in this episode. You can vote for your favorite song or tune when you join us on Patreon. The most-popular track will be added to our Christmas playlists. You have just two weeks to vote. So…

Cast your vote for the Celtic Christmas Favorite song.

Then let me know if there's a Celtic Christmas song or tune that I should add to the next episode of the show.

For more than three decades, Cape Breton-based family group the Barra MacNeils has been thrilling audiences of all ages, near and far, with their sparkling repertoire, vocals, instrumental prowess and vibrant showmanship. They are Canada's Celtic ambassadors!

Their Christmas album is currently available on vinyl. You'll also find a wooden tree ornament in their store along with all of their albums.

21:22 - The Barra MacNeils "Party In Washabuckt" from The Christmas Album

"Angels We Have Heard on High (feat. Al Church)" by Gaelynn Lea from Deepest Darkness, Brightest Dawn

That was from today's special holiday guest. She is on the latest Celtic Christmas Playlist.

    HOLIDAY FEATURE: Gaelynn Lea

Traditional fiddle music tugs at the heartstrings, and it infuses feeling into what is otherwise notes on a page. There's something transformative about it. Not only has Gaeylnn Lea mastered her craft, but her experimental use of this time-honored instrument adds yet another dimension to the sound. Melodies are stretched and harmonies are crafted by her use of live looping, paired with obvious classical training. It's updated, and ultimately, very satisfying. Cellist Zoe Keating springs to mind as one listens to Lea's use of her chosen instrument. It's no wonder she has drawn attention for her music—she has really been carving out her own niche in the industry.

Gaelynn has been playing the violin for over two decades, and there's little doubt she's comfortable with bow in hand. It really does take a person mastering an instrument before experimentation can be successful. The challenge is to depart from the norm and create something unique—all while expanding on previous training. The skill is still in there--but the music grows larger and more full. This is what Gaelynn does, and it's a pleasure to hear the thread of the familiar woven in with the freshness of something new at the hands of an experienced artist.

The musician has been recognized for her work—being chosen as the winner of NPR Music's 2016 Tiny Desk Contest, recognized as a benchmark in the world of music. This competition brings in thousands of submissions, and to win is quite the accomplishment!

Those who are looking for a forward-looking holiday collection of music will want to investigate Lea's album, "Deepest Darkness, Brightest Dawn". The tracks that are included here boast many of the well-known popular carol names, such as Angels We Have Heard on High, Silent Night, Away in a Manger, and O Come, O Come Emmanuel--but you haven't ever heard them played like this before.

The 14-track album is an easy fit for anyone who is a true strings aficionado, and it would round out any collection of holiday music. Perfect for everything from a romantic candlelight dinner with your love, or at a family gathering, "Deepest Darkness, Brightest Dawn" is a delight to listen to. Experience the joy of hearing Christmas favorites that are coaxed into a new form through the hands of a talented musician.

    FEATURED PLAYLIST: Christmas Driving Music

Our latest playlist features music that is perfect for a Christmas Drive. Gather up your presents. Hop in the car. Let's go for a drive to visit family and friends with this delightful playlist of Celtic Christmas music for driving down the road.

Listen to Christmas Driving now on Spotify.

"God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen / Pathways / The Kesh" by Abbots Cross from Christmas Visions

That was from today's special holiday guest–Abbots Cross. They are on the latest Celtic Christmas Playlist-Christmas Driving Music.

    HOLIDAY FEATURE: Abbots Cross

Pair up two experienced musicians who enjoy Celtic music and what do you get? Well, in this case, you get Abbots Cross! One half of this duo is Alan Booth, who plays guitar, fiddle, and provides the vocals for the group. Alan comes from a musical family and has been steeped in it all his life, starting with piano at the tender age of five, and having two music teachers for parents. He even does musical volunteer work in the Pittsburgh area where he's from—and has traveled all the way to Kenya to share his deep love of singing and playing instruments.

The second half of this duo is Mike Clancy, who provides the percussion, as well as the Irish flute and whistles to the mix. Also a seasoned musician, he has performed for several of the Broadway shows that have traveled to Pittsburgh. Mike plays with several bands in addition to Abbots Cross, and has even created original jazz compositions and released them to CD himself.

It's easy to see how the blending of these two men would provide the foundation for a solid band, and they do come together well to highlight their considerable talents! The holiday album, "Christmas Visions" is a 10-track offering that has such interesting arrangements—and they are deftly played. Clancy's flute takes center stage in many of these tracks, and it just adds so much to the music. In particular, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is just fantastic. These guys know how to stay true to the spirit of a holiday song while experimenting with what you can do with the music. Everything on this album has a very natural, free-flowing feel to it. It's as if the arrangements are loose and the two musicians just get in the groove and have a good time pushing their abilities. A veritable Christmas "jam session"!

Don't miss Si Bheag, Si Mhor / The First Noel. It's hauntingly beautiful, beginning with the flute and then picking up the guitar gently in the background. This track builds slowly and easily with a warmth and genuineness that is very pleasing. Deck the Halls is happy and cheery as it should be, but also paired with a Christmas Eve Reel, adding that Celtic flavor and appeal.

This holiday compilation by Abbots Cross is a real treat, and a standout among the many Christmas albums. Don't miss the chance to add something different to your collection of Celtic music that will help you get into the mood for celebrating!
