2/8: Tom Brady wins his 7th Super Bowl. Pres Biden talks to CBS News in his first network interview in office. Feb 08, 2021
    Show notes

It's the first time the winning team's city has also hosted the Super Bowl. People here were elated to see their Bucs win, and they hit the streets to celebrate. But with the pandemic as a backdrop, that's exactly what officials were worried about. Buccaneers defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh joined us to discuss his Super Bowl win. In an exclusive CBS News interview, President Biden says he expects next year's Super Bowl to be played in a full stadium, but it'll be "very difficult" to reach herd immunity against the coronavirus by the fall. The president is pushing ahead with the Democrats' COVID relief bill, but former President Trump's second impeachment trial threatens to overshadow it. There's new concern this morning over a more infectious coronavirus strain that's starting to spread in the U.S. The pandemic's victims in the U.S. include more than 28,000 grocery workers who have tested positive or been exposed to COVID-19, and hazard pay for many of them ended months ago.

2/4: Republicans refuse to punish one of their own members. Challenges getting the vaccine to rural areas. Feb 04, 2021
    Show notes

We are at a crucial moment right now in American politics, with the Republican party facing a stark choice about its future. At the center of the drama is Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who escaped any punishment yesterday at a closed-door GOP meeting over her extreme views, including endorsing political violence and anti-Semitic falsehoods. According to the CDC, more than 27 million Americans have now gotten at least one COVID vaccine shot. But some rural areas in Virginia are being left behind because of how the process is designed. The CDC says classrooms can re-open, even if teachers have not been vaccinated, as long as COVID protocols are met. San Francisco is actually suing their own school district to force re-openings. The Pentagon is taking drastic action to root out extremism in its ranks, ordering a military-wide "stand down" over the next 60 days for urgent discussions on the issue. A former Columbus, Ohio police officer is now charged with murder for killing a black man in December.

Golden Globe nominee Sacha Baron Cohen on bringing Borat back and chasing the role in "The Trial of the Chicago Seen" Feb 04, 2021
    Show notes

British actor, writer and producer Sacha Baron Cohen starred in two of the most critically-acclaimed films of the past year. He's now received three Golden Globe nominations for his role as political activist Abbie Hoffman in Netflix's "The Trial of the Chicago Seven," for reprising the role of Borat, and as a producer on “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.” He joined "CBS This Morning" co-host Anthony Mason to discuss why he was so determined and driven to make both a Borat sequel and star in Aaron Sorkin's "The Trial of the Chicago Seven."

2/3: New positive signs in the fight against COVID, but there’s still a troubling racial disparity in who is getting the vaccine. Feb 03, 2021
    Show notes

There's a new reason to be cautiously optimistic about the timeline to beat the pandemic. AstraZeneca says its coronavirus vaccine not only prevents the virus, but slows the spread as well. Hospitalizations are also down in America, part of a weeks-long trajectory. But the good news is not evenly distributed when it comes to vaccinations. Scientists in England say the fast-spreading COVID-19 variant first found in the UK is now evolving, in a way that could make existing vaccines less effective. We have new details this morning on one of the deadliest days for the FBI in nearly 35 years. The Biden administration is putting its immigration strategy in place, along with a new Homeland Security secretary. U.S. Capitol police officer Brian Sicknick, who was killed in last month's riot, lies in honor this morning.

2/2: Millions are frozen in place due to a monster snow storm. COVID chaos is taking a toll on hospital workers. Feb 02, 2021
    Show notes

Much of the Northeast is getting its biggest and snowiest winter storm in years. More than two feet of snow fell in parts of New York and New Jersey, all but hiding major roads from view. New COVID cases and deaths are finally going down nationwide, after a devastating spike in January. Even so, conditions in many hospitals are harrowing, including for medical workers who are on the frontlines of the suffering. The pandemic has created an overwhelming need for help, and the Biden administration has a nearly two trillion dollar plan to respond. The president met last night with Republican senators who say his relief package is too big. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is blasting a fellow Republican, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, for her record of endorsing a series of conspiracy theories. Three Rochester, New York police officers have been removed from patrol after video shows one of them pepper-spraying a 9-year-old handcuffed girl.

2/1: A massive winter storm blasting the Northeast is affecting travel and the fight against the coronavirus. Feb 01, 2021
    Show notes

There are dangerous conditions throughout the Northeast, including not just snow, but also high winds, power outages, and flooding along the coast. We're still very much in the middle of the storm, which already dropped more than a foot of snow in parts of the Midwest. Meteorologist and climate specialist Jeff Berardelli joins us to explain how climate change is affecting the storm. The race to vaccinate Americans against COVID is accelerating as new strains of the disease spread around the United States. 32 states have now detected variants of the virus first found in the UK, Brazil and South Africa, putting even more pressure on the vaccination push and hospitals. Senate Democrats are making plans to pass President Biden's sweeping $1.9 trillion COVID relief package, with or without Republican support. A group of ten GOP senators is proposing a much smaller measure, and urging the president to follow through on his promise to work with Republicans. The military has taken control of Myanmar, once known as Burma, in an apparent overnight coup. Civilian leaders of the Southeast Asian country have been detained, including Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Oscar, Emmy, and Tony winner died yesterday, she was 96 years old. We spoke with Tyson a week ago, before the release of her new memoir, "Just As I Am." A troubling new strain of the coronavirus is now in the U.S, making vaccination efforts even more urgent. We talk to the new director of the CDC about the challenges. An investigation is underway into a deadly liquid nitrogen leak at a poultry plant Georgia. Six people were killed, and a dozen more hurt -- three critically. There's new political fallout in congress from the assault on the capitol -- and a rift in the republican party is growing
