12/28: New CDC guidance for people who test positive for COVID-19. Severe weather is still pummeling parts of the west. Dec 28, 2021
    Show notes

There isnew CDC guidance for people who test positive for COVID-19. The government health agency says if people are COVID-positive and have no symptoms, they can now isolate for five days instead of 10—and they *don't* need a negative test to end that isolation period. If you're vaccinated with a booster and were exposed to the virus, you will *no longer* need to try to stay home or quarantine--but you should wear a mask around others for 10 days. If you're unvaccinated, you still need to try to quarantine for five full days after exposure. Thousands of flights have been canceled in the last week, in part because COVID has left airlines with a shortage of crew members. The U.S. now averages 260 pediatric COVID hospitalizations a day. That is up nearly 30 percent from last week. Police are investigating a deadly series of shootings across multiple locations in Denver and Lakewood, Colorado, yesterday. In Los Angeles, the LAPD has released video evidence from a police shooting last week that killed a 14-year-old girl. California's Sierra Nevada mountains have had up to 14 feet of snow in recent days, blocking many of the local roads. More snow is coming during this stretch of severe weather out west.

12/27: COVID causes last minute flight cancellations over Christmas weekend. World leaders are paying tribute to the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Dec 27, 2021
    Show notes

It was a difficult Christmas weekend for thousands of Americans because of the latest COVID surge. From Friday to Sunday, more than three thousand flights were canceled across the U.S. Hundreds more were canceled this morning. The CDC says the average daily number of new COVID cases is surging to more than 176 thousand people. That's the highest it's been in nearly a year. Christmas weekend also brought some brutal weather in the west. Up to five inches of snow made treacherous road conditions in Seattle. A rare tornado-like event on Christmas day knocked down trees and damaged property in Santa Barbara, California. Meanwhile, the national weather service is warning of potentially record-breaking highs and a possible *fire risk* in parts of the south. In Britain, Queen Elizabeth's annual Christmas broadcast also served as a tribute to Prince Philip, her husband of 73 years. This was the queen's first Christmas without Philip, who died in April. The queen and other world leaders are paying tribute to Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The anti-apartheid leader, who inspired millions to challenge a racist government, died Sunday. He was 90 years old.

12/23: Covid cases soar ahead of the holidays, the FDA authorizes a pill to treat the virus. 5 people are under arrest after a congresswoman was carjacked. Dec 24, 2021
    Show notes

COVID cases soar ahead of the holidays -- while the FDA authorizes a pill to treat the virus. In the last three days, more than 671,000 new cases have been reported in the U.S.-- and it could be weeks before the numbers start to fall. A new pill has been authorized to treat covid in the U.S.. That newly- authorized pill is called Paxlovid. In a new interview, President Biden says we could be doing better in the fight against the virus -- but we're still better off than we were a year ago. Police say two men held Pennsylvania Democrat Mary Gay Scanlon at gunpoint and took her SUV yesterday. Scanlon was not hurt. And mother nature will make that getaway tough for around 20 million people West of the rockies.

Kennedy Center honoree Lorne Michaels talks legacy and "Saturday Night Live" Dec 23, 2021
    Show notes

Lorne Michaels, executive producer and co-creator of "Saturday Night Live," is among this year's class of Kennedy Center honorees. "CBS Mornings" co-host Gayle King went behind the scenes with Michaels at SNL's iconic home in Studio 8H to see how the magic happens.

12/22: Pres. Biden unveils Omicron plan, issues warning for unvaccinated. There are only three shopping days until Christmas. Dec 22, 2021
    Show notes

A stark warning from President Biden as Omicron surges nationwide. The CDC reported nearly 290,000 new COVID cases on Monday. That's the second most new infections reported in one day since the pandemic began. President Biden has announced a wide range of steps to slow the spread – including more testing. Colorado's governor is under growing pressure to reduce the sentence of a truck driver who killed four people in a fiery crash. Workers at Kellogg's are ending a nationwide strike after eleven weeks on the picket line. There are only three shopping days until Christmas. The window for on-time delivery is all but closed, so plenty of shoppers are hitting the stores -- risking a possible covid infection as they search for presents.

12/21: Omicron variant is now the dominant strain in the U.S. First Omicron-related death reported in Texas yesterday. Dec 21, 2021
    Show notes

A COVID spike adds stress to the holidays for the second year in a row. The Omicron variant is now the dominant COVID strain in the U.S.-- making up more than 73% of new cases, according to a CDC estimate. The very first Omicron-related death was reported in Texas yesterday. President Biden is expected to address all this in a speech to the nation today. There are long lines at testing sites across the country now -- as many Americans prepare for the holidays. The jury in Ghislaine Maxwell's sex abuse trial will continue deliberating today. Another jury in Minneapolis is deciding the fate of former police officer Kim Potter. We revealed last month that more than 30 soldiers, injured by an Iranian missile attack in Iraq, were denied the Purple Heart. After our investigation, the army reopened the case. And decided another 50 soldiers deserved the medal, given to military members wounded in action. The last eleven of those awards were approved over the weekend. More Purple Hearts have been issued for that attack in January 2020, than any other incident of its kind in decades.

12/20: COVID cases rise ahead of holidays, a surge that could be different than past waves. A single Democrat stops the president's agenda for now. Dec 20, 2021
    Show notes

Long lines for tests, as covid cases surge before the holidays. The fast-spreading Omicron variant has now been detected in all but five states. Average new COVID numbers have nearly doubled since the beginning of November, with the U.S. now averaging 156,000 cases a day. Moderna has released new data this morning -- that shows a third shot could be crucial to fighting the Omicron variant. A prominent Democratic senator has handed President Biden a major setback to his giant social spending plan. Turning to Asia, North Korea is telling its citizens to show greater loyalty to dictator Kim Jong-un, ten years after he took control of the nuclear armed country.
