    Show notes

President Biden is expected to visit Florida today after the death toll from Hurricane Ian rose to at least 108. But amid the rubble and despair, there are stories of immense generosity and kindness. In Moscow this morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the papers annexing four provinces in eastern Ukraine, in violation of international law. While he was doing that, Ukraine's army was pushing back Russian forces and regaining control of some of that same territory. Former President Trump wants the Supreme Court to weigh in on the investigation into classified documents seized by the FBI at Mar-a-Lago. Republicans, including former President Trump, are throwing their full support behind Georgia senate candidate Herschel Walker, despite a report in The Daily Beast claiming he paid for a girlfriend's abortion in 2009. Walker denies all that, and he prayed yesterday with a supportive crowd at a surprise campaign event, as he remains locked in a very close race with Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock. In an exclusive interview, Brittney Griner's wife tells us she is "terrified" about the WNBA superstar's fate. President Biden is telling his administration to engage with the Russian Government at all levels, to bring Griner home immediately. Aaron Judge made baseball history last night. The New York Yankees outfielder set a new American League record and some argue it's really a Major League Baseball record, too.

President Biden visited Puerto Rico, to survey the damage from another deadly storm, Hurricane Fiona. He promised more than $60 million to help the island prepare for future extreme weather events. At least 25 people were killed when Hurricane Fiona hit Puerto Rico as a Category 1 storm, two weeks ago. North Korea has sharply escalated its confrontation with the U.S. and its allies with an aggressive new missile test. Russia's military is stepping up its so-called partial mobilization for its war on Ukraine, the defense minister says 200,000 reservists have been recalled so far. Ukraine's army is pushing farther into Russian-controlled areas and recapturing more territory. The Iranian government’s violent crackdown on peaceful protests is now in its 18th day. One human rights group says at least 133 people have been killed and hundreds have been arrested so far. In Washington, the January 6th trial is underway for high-profile members of the extremist group the Oath Keepers. Founder Stewart Rhodes and four other members are accused of seditious conspiracy, a charge reserved for people who plot to take on the U.S. government by force. In the midterm elections, there is a new twist in the pivotal senate race in Georgia. The website the Daily Beast is reporting Republican candidate Herschel Walker paid for a woman he was dating to get an abortion in 2009. This comes as polls show Walker in a close race against Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock.

The number of confirmed deaths has risen to 86 in the U.S. The vast majority in Florida. More than 630,000 people are still without power. That number will hopefully continue to fall, as recovery work progresses. Russian troops have been driven out of another important city in Ukraine. Ukrainian forces recaptured Leeman, a major crossroads in eastern Ukraine over the weekend. Russia is responding with more long-range attacks that have killed civilians. The Supreme Court opens a new term today with Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson making history and four female justices now serving on the court. The justices will be taking on more significant cases after its historic decision in June to overturn Roe v. Wade. The justices will hear arguments tomorrow in a voting rights case from Alabama.
