Perhaps a negative view of the human body has been construed from St. Paul's remarks about "crucifying the flesh." But Paul is simply pointing out that the flesh fell with the soul in the Garden, must be restored, and will be elevated even higher to the image of Christ. Jesus reveals the Gospel of the Body. "Only in reference to the human person in his 'unified totality', that is, as 'a soul which expresses itself in a body and a body informed by an immortal spirit', can the specifically human meaning of the body be grasped. Indeed, natural inclinations take on moral relevance only insofar as they refer to the human person and his authentic fulfilment, a fulfilment which for that matter can take place always and only in human nature" (Veritatis Splendor, JPII). What if the elevation of the human person in Christ is actually BETTER than it would have been if sin and suffering had never entered the human picture? The Church Fathers teach that the body is not the "container" for the soul, but the soul is the "container" of the body, and is everywhere throughout the body. This view is reflected in Jesus' statements, "The eye [the soul, according to the Fathers] is the light of the body. So, if your eye is sound [integrated, one], your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!" When the soul, which is everywhere in the body, is suffering and sick, the body is suffering and sick. But in Christ, man is the subject and co-creator of the salvation and redemption of both his body and soul (Theology of the Body, JPII), so that the whole human person, soul and body, becomes "full of light." It's hard to impossible to be physically healthy when you hate your body. Media, trauma, disease, pregnancies, abuse, ageing, bullying - how a person perceives her appearance and feels in his body directly impacts his or her physical health. What is the truth about your body? "The human body shares in the dignity of "the image of God": it is a human body precisely because it is animated by a spiritual soul, and it is the whole human person that is intended to become, in the body of Christ, a temple of the Spirit . . . For this reason man may not despise his bodily life. Rather he is obliged to regard his body as good and to hold it in honour since God has created it and will raise it up on the last day" (CCC 364-365). Healing is the "science of love," as Therese of Lisieux framed it. Because all healing comes from God, and God is relationship, we are healed in the measure that we know God intimately. We cannot love God when other things are prioritized over our time and attention. We cannot know Him if we are not consciously connecting to Him. We cannot expect to experience His unconditional love while holding a bag of conditions. How do we consciously connect to Him when we cannot hear or feel Him? As all the saints and sages assert, we LOVE in silent meditation and contemplation. As St. Augustine said, "the end of the Scriptures is love": L-listen; O-observe; V-verbalize; E-entrust. 02_The Divine Romance, Cherished Series Jul 11, 2022

Love is the ultimate mystery, isn't it? Love is both the primary human need and the fundamental motivation of every human act: we're always, always, always either trying to get love or trying to give love. It's that basic. We need to be cherished and to cherish. Because it's as fundamental as the philosopher's "first cause," when our attempts to love or be loved are rejected or twisted, or when we are not loved well, we suffer the deepest possible suffering. On the other hand, because it's so fundamental, only love heals. Look at the saints, any of them, all of them. Name one, and I insist that saint is one who has been healed by inexhaustible Love. Cherished. A saint is one who has embraced his neediness, his deficits, his feelings of unworthiness, and dared to approach God anyway, trusting that what the Bible, the Church, and the saints all say is true: God is love. And in so doing, they experienced God, they felt His love, and it healed them. You were made to be cherished, ravished, and overwhelmed by Love. Do you dare? The language in the Bible regarding divine intimacy is extreme enough to make one uncomfortable, but oh the glory of the experience for those who dare to press into the "King's chamber" with faith!
