Candlelit Tales Irish Mythology Podcast

We are a group of storytellers, performers, and musicians. We tell Irish myths to a live audience with live music.
Candlelit Tales was founded by brother-sister storytelling duo Aron and Sorcha Hegarty. Driven by a passion for Irish mythology, we started retelling the stories to a near-empty room upstairs in a Dublin pub one rainy evening in November. The next week, the room was a lot less empty, and we were joined by musician Ru O’Sé. By the fourth week, the room was full, and so was the hall outside. We realised that when we share our passion, it becomes contagious. And we’ve been telling stories and playing music from that day to this.

Since then, over the past five years of telling stories in the capital of this nation of storytellers, we have developed and refined our uniquely expressive, naturalistic and modern style. Live music is the heartbeat of all our performances, and a live original music score composed by a team of talented musicians drives the rhythm of the stories

Episode 83 - Bricriu's Feast Jan 20, 2021

Show notes

It is mid-January and we’re all missing the festive season just gone by. So, to look back at feasts and the glorious fighting that takes place over them, (in Irish feasts at least) we are releasing a two-part episode of a story known as ‘The Champions Portion’. The first part of this deals with Bichru of the Bitter tongue, and his attempt to host a feast. This section of the story is also known as ‘Bichru’s Feast’ in Richard Marsh's book 'Irish King and Hero Tales'. As his title suggests he is a troublemaker and prefers to cause strife amongst his friends and kinsmen than enjoy their company modestly. After all, he can take no enjoyment from food, of sex, or even drink… so he has to amuse himself somehow. After inviting all the heroes of the Craobh Rua (the Red Branch) to his feasting hall, he has a few tricks up his sleeve to ensure this will be a memorable night. He has to be one of our favorite tricksters in Irish Myth, but he might have bitten off more than he can chew in this episode... Episode 82 - The Death Of Conal Cearnach - Post Show Chats Jan 17, 2021

Show notes

Ending our death series on a lighter note with the post show chat we had about the death of Conall Cearnach, the second greatest hero of Ulster. Our holiday bubble came to a sudden end early in January, and just before Sorcha returned home to Dublin, we had a chance to chat about the death of this great hero. We also enjoyed the deepening of her Cork accent and generally shite talked about how enjoyable the death series was for us and why it’s important to look back on these set of stories. Conall Cearnach was the runner-up to his younger cousin, Cúchulainn, and he was spectacular in his own way, so we had loads to talk about. Crooked necked and touched with an otherworldly beauty, he was vicious in battle and boasted that he never went to bed without the severed head of a Connaughtman under his knee. But what happens to a hero who is unbeatable? Who is so fierce and so terrifying that he wins all his battles? What happens when he grows old, and slow, and sick? What were the honour systems in place in that society and what were the deeper meanings to these stories. Conall Cearnach found his own way to get the death he always wanted, and the death series has come to a dramatic end with his demise. He and Cúchulainn will be back in action in the next episode however, as we tell ‘Bichru’s Feast’. Support for this podcast comes from our patrons. Episode 81 - Death Of Conal Cearnach Jan 13, 2021

Show notes

Ending our death series on a lighter note (can you have a lighter note in a Death series?) is the story of Conall Cearnach, the second greatest hero of Ulster. Always the runner-up to his younger cousin, Cúchulainn, Conall was spectacular in his own way. If that hero is Conall Cearnach, he finds a way to get the death he always wanted. Support for this podcast comes from our patrons. Episode 80 - The Death of CuChulainn - Post Show Chats Jan 12, 2021

Show notes

The penultimate story in our Death Series is the death of one of the greatest of all heroes: Cúchulainn. This story and discussion was recorded in early 2020, though we thought the better of releasing tales of glorious death at the time… turns out now is as good a time as any. Cúchulainn’s death was long foretold. From the moment he took up arms as a boy, he knew that his life would be brief, and full of pain. But he knew that his story would stay on the lips of storytellers until the end of time, and that seemed a good bargain to a young boy. Here, he faces his final battle, still reaching for glory. Episode 78 - The Death Of Medb - Post Show Chat Jan 04, 2021

Show notes

We are talking about the Death of Medbh in this episode and we also talk about our online storytelling course. The storytelling course is 2 hours per week, Saturdays from 3-5 pm over 6 weeks, starting on the 9th of January. Each session will start with a short lecture on the day's theory topic, and the rest of the session is interactive practical exercises, exploring that aspect of storytelling that we have chosen. We are pricing it at €50 per class (so €300 in total) but if you are interested and struggling with finances we can talk about what you're able to afford (the world is mental at the moment so we want to include as many people as possible that would like to do this course). We will be using Irish myths as the material to practice on and play with throughout the course. Participants will be helped to choose a story or character to focus on, and will work on that story throughout the course, performing it at the end of the course. https://candlelittales.ie/product/storytelling-training-online-zoom/ Email us on candlelit.tales@gmail.com to reserve your spot. For her part, Medb chose to retire, as many great rulers did, passing on the throne of Connaught to her successor and going to live in peace and seclusion. Show notes

Third in our Death Series is the strange and prolonged death of Conchubar Mac Nessa, King of Ulster, and in this episode we chat about the connection he had with the one and only Jesus Christ. Timely too seeing as its just gone Christmas and the celebration of the birth of the same man… but this episode is dedicated to a boy born on the 26th of December 2020, and that boys name is Anthony Nahual Hegarty, our brothers first born child. Now back to th mythology... Conchubar is a wily king and remembered as a great leader. As well as sound judgement, he was a man of great beauty, and great vanity. Over the years, we’ve come to wonder at his wonderful reputation, but there’s no doubt that he left a lasting legacy. At some time in the retelling of this tale, Concubar’s birth and death was linked with another mythic figure, from far away, in the East. Support for this podcast comes from our patrons. Episode 74 -The Death Of Celtchar Mac Utherchar - Post Show Chat Dec 23, 2020

Show notes

The second in our Death series, this story and discussion was recorded in early 2020. We decided at the time that stories of glorious death might not be the thing to be releasing, so we shelved them for a while. He has to have one of the greatest names in Irish mythology: Celtchar Mac Uthechar. A lesser-known hero of the Ulaid, Celtchar appears in some of the stories of the Ulster Cycle, but his greatest story is the story of his death. A quest to rid Ulster of its three greatest pests, this story is one of the most determined to ignore linear time of any story in Irish mythology, and that’s saying something! Produced and edited by Oisin Ryan, with music by Oisin Ryan, story by Sorcha Hegarty and Aron Hegarty. We mentioned this video by the Tale Foundry in this podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxLtDNGq1A4 And you can find a translation of the Death Tale of Celtchar Mac Uthechair in the UCC electronic folklore archives: The Death-Tales of the Ulster Heroes Support for this podcast comes from our patrons.
