    Candlelit Tales Irish Mythology Podcast

We are a group of storytellers, performers, and musicians. We tell Irish myths to a live audience with live music.
Candlelit Tales was founded by brother-sister storytelling duo Aron and Sorcha Hegarty. Driven by a passion for Irish mythology, we started retelling the stories to a near-empty room upstairs in a Dublin pub one rainy evening in November. The next week, the room was a lot less empty, and we were joined by musician Ru O’Sé. By the fourth week, the room was full, and so was the hall outside. We realised that when we share our passion, it becomes contagious. And we’ve been telling stories and playing music from that day to this.

Since then, over the past five years of telling stories in the capital of this nation of storytellers, we have developed and refined our uniquely expressive, naturalistic and modern style. Live music is the heartbeat of all our performances, and a live original music score composed by a team of talented musicians drives the rhythm of the stories

    Episode 134 - Echoes - Post Show for Episode 131 Oct 03, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast, and to the post show chat episodes about our collaboration with ‘The Embers Collective’, and we will hear from Sarah Lisa and Ruairi O’Shea as they compare notes about the stories they shared. If you missed episode 131 of this series, have a listen before this episode to avoid spoilers, or after if you prefer. The next two episodes will be more post show chats about the previous stories in this series. For now, Sarah Lisa tells us about what her creepy, (yet devilishly told) story of ‘The Devil's Violin’ means to her. Ru also explains what themes he tried to echo in the story of ‘The Kings Harp’, while Sorcha offers her own observations and questions between the two. If you enjoyed this conversation or thought of something we didn’t mention, please let us know. For this new series, ‘Echoes’, we have teamed up with London-based Storytelling Company ‘The Embers Collective’, who tell global folktales and myths set to live music. They gave us three stories, and we found the Irish equivalent. We chose stories that we thought ‘echoed’ something intrinsic in these stories, and while not always obvious at first, we hope you agree there is a subtle level of repetition in these stories. When any story is told, you can hear others echo in its re-telling. We often get messages about how the great warrior Cuchulainn reminds people of the hero Achilles. How Fionn is our Odin, or Manannan Mac Lir our version of Poseidon or Neptune. And when you look at any of the great stories, you will often find a familiar aspect echoed in other mythologies. Similar structures are used or similar events are described. Sometimes it can even be as blatant as the exact same plot points are used with different names. So we decided to record a few of these for this podcast. Episode 129 - Fintan and the Hawk of Achill - Post Show Chats Sep 01, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome back to the Invasions Series. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. And this is the very last episode of a long series taken from the Book of Invasions. This cycle of Irish Myth is also known as the “Mythic Cycle” of Irish Mythology and we are sad to close the lid on this chapter… for now. We talk about the whole season, the music, and the madness that is contained in it. We also reflect on our process, how much has changed in a year, and how much we’ve grown thanks to our supporters on Patreon and our followers on YouTube and other Podcast Platforms. You have all helped us grow, invest in our podcast, and improve the quality of what we put out. So thank you to everyone who supports us in every way. This last chat is about one of our favourite characters in Irish Mythology, and it is one that we hoped you enjoyed last week. A deep dive into the mind of a man who has lived for thousands of years and all that would come with the mental strain of seeing trees blossom, grow, age, then fall and decay. All in what appears to be a single year of your life. We could hardly get our heads around that, but we chatted about it anyway and we’d love to hear from you in case you had a different thought on the matter. Epsiode 128 - Invasions - The Hawk of Achill Aug 25, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome back to the Invasions Series. This is the last episode of this fairly long series. And we decided to end it on a caracter we met in the very first story, and one who has cropped up a couple of times since; Fintan Mac Bocera. He is known as the wise seer, and spiritual connection between man and island. He transformed to become one with every aspect of Ireland, and observe it from every point of view. He has seen all of the people come to Ireland, and he has watched from the eyes of a boar, a stag, a salmon and even a bird. But now he meets the hawk of Achill again, and they share their desire to rest. This is a tale with a very definite end point… Fintan and the Hawk walk away from this world, together, never to return. We will be talking about this story in more detail in the next episode. Drop us a line or ask us a question and we’ll try to get to it in our live post-show chat that is coming out at the end of the month. Like and subscribe to this channel to help us grow. Welcome back to the Invasions Series. We’re coming towards the end of this series, and today we're talking about the Sons of Mil, the last peoples to come to mythic Ireland. We’re talking about the “good” Tuatha de Dannan and how they might not be so black and white as all that; the gods and goddesses of the island and how it got its name at last; and the use of magic in Irish mythology. Just who is it that gets to be magical anyway? We’ll also be chatting about the different versions of the Battle of Tailtiu and how this might be the story of how the Otherworld was created. Welcome back to the Invasions Series. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. The last of the mythic peoples to arrive came not with a conquering eye, but with a wandering one. Welcome back to the Invasions Series. Today we're talking about the Second Battle of Moy Tura. We’ll be chatting about good vs evil (or not!); the climax of the conflict between the Old God and the New; the final defeat of the Fomorians, and the curious habit they and the Tuatha de Dannan had of mixing. Why were so many of the Tuatha de Dannan’s greatest heroes half Fomorian?
