We have some good news and some bad news. The good news: The feds plan to balance the budget before 2070. The bad news? They won’t be balancing the budget until after 2041! By then, interest charges will have cost taxpayers $802 billion.

The CTF has been telling the federal government how to avoid the crunch.

The Trudeau government pushed the federal budgets to historic highs and took on massive new debts, all in the name of fighting COVID-19.

The CTF took a look around the world, and other countries have been far more restrained. One thing is clear: After two years of a worldwide pandemic, we know that more government spending does not guarantee better results.
