Episode 74: Fed Rate Drop, Housing Market Shift & Our Biggest Homestead Fix Yet Oct 02, 2025

As September closes and October begins, Sophia and Tim dive into the latest housing market shifts. With Jerome Powell’s recent message hinting at a slight lowering of the Fed rate, the market has seen a surprising pickup in activity. More buyers are stepping out, referrals are increasing for Tim, and while housing inventory remains tight and prices continue to soften, offers are finally flowing again. They break down what this means for families navigating real estate in today’s environment.

On the homestead, big changes are underway as Fall settles in. Sophia and Tim share updates on bringing back a couple of their bred cows onto new pasture, now fully fenced with barbed wire they recently completed on leased land. That installation, captured step-by-step in a brand-new video course, was just released inside their Call to Farms online community. (See the link below to learn more.) They’re also installing long-awaited ball waterers which were planned and budgeted for six months, just in time for winter. This project ties directly into Tim’s SAFE Method, outlined in his new book FM 5-21: Fortify Your Farm, showing how creating redundant systems prevents burnout (like hauling heavy water buckets during East Tennessee’s freezing weeks) and keeps the homestead sustainable.

They also reflect on recent travels: Sophia and the children’s educational field trip to The Koji House in Virginia, learning about koji’s role in both culinary traditions and sake-making. For the past 20 years, they’ve been cultivating their 27-acre farm in eastern Ohio—land officially deemed “not suitable for agriculture.” Despite the odds, Shawn and Beth have transformed this landscape into a thriving, self-sustaining ecosystem using sunlight, rainfall, and intensive grazing as their primary inputs. Their farm supports dairy and beef cows, sheep, farm-fed hogs, and poultry, producing nearly all their food and feed on-site. Authors of The Independent Farmstead, published by Chelsea Green in 2016, Shawn and Beth have dedicated themselves to reducing dependency on off-farm resources like fuel, fertilizer, and even electricity. They’ve identified grass conversion—especially through dairy ruminants—as a cornerstone of whole-farm sustainability. Their research and practical experience reveal how diverse animal and plant systems work together to create a self-sufficient, regenerative homestead. This was a casual, insightful conversation about their homesteading journey, filled with practical wisdom and a vision for empowering others to begin their own paths toward independence. Episode 39: Bee Kept with Adam and Leslie Martin Jul 10, 2024

In this episode, Tim and Sophie interview Adam and Leslie Martin of Bee Kept to hear their story on why and how they answered the call to farms in moving from CA to TN. Leslie left a career as a licensed professional engineer and Adam was a former fireman and surveyor who gave up their careers to homestead. Today, they live on a thriving homestead with both dairy and beef cattle, chickens and bees. Adam is known for his natural and sustainable bee keeping methods who instructed on School of Traditional Skills and is publishing his book, Bee Kept with Wild and Free Honey Bees. Adam offers mentorship in beekeeping and loves to teach classes to introduce others on his love for natural beekeeping. Tune in to hear their story.

In this episode, Tim and Sophie interview Chef James Barry, founder and owner of Pluck! Chef James discusses his culinary journey which began as a private chef for Tom Cruise, Gerard Butler and George Clooney to name a few. Instead of adapting his cooking to particular diets, he opened up his clients' palates to enjoying nourishing, whole foods using animal fats and butter. Chef James loves to think outside the box and is fascinated with how we as humans can make changes to improve health by making minor daily shifts in how we eat to retrain our brain to slow down as we eat so that we can enjoy the meal and allow our body the time to digest. He is a believer of listening to our bodies and being in tune with what we eat and knowing where it comes from. Chef James dispels the myth that you have to eat organic and grass fed all the time. Instead, he places more emphasis on intentional eating and putting in positive energy to what we eat. This led him to creating his company Pluck which is a quick and easy way to introduce your loved ones to organ based foods by sprinkling it on your foods as a seasoning. Episode 34: The Homesteaders United Jamboree May 28, 2024

In this bonus episode, Tim and Sophie announce that they are launching a Homesteading Conference in 2024 with Mike and Lacie Dickson, "The Fit Farmer" and Billy and Michelle Bond, "PermaPastures Farm." It is called the Homesteaders United Jamboree which will be held Aug 29-31 in Fletcher, NC. This conference will be centered on building community with great food, music, and company as we share our knowledge with one another. They were homesteading before "homesteading was a thing" because they sought to be self-sufficient. By following regenerative farming practices for over 30 years, John and Maggie became well known in the community for being good stewards of their livestock and land. They are passionate about sharing and teaching others. This episode is a real treat as Tim and Sophie get a chance to sit down and ask them questions on how they got started and any advice they would give to new homesteaders to be successful. Maggie was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma a year ago and has been battling it through holistic practices. Although she maintains her spirits, she does need help paying for treatments.
