An Epidemic of Gentrification Oct 01, 2020
    Show notes

President Trump was in Minnesota and warned his very white audience that Biden wants to make the whole state a refugee camp and got them to boo Somalis because racism. Millions of Americans are in danger of having their utilities shut off due to the economic recession. Chrissy Teigen shared her grief on Instagram and got a lot of love and sympathy in return. And with a wave of evictions still looming, culture writer Kovie Biakolo is looking ahead to what it could mean for the gentrification already encroaching on black and brown neighborhoods.

So That Was Some Debate, Huh Sep 30, 2020
    Show notes

The first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden was, to directly quote a CNN reporter, “a shitshow.” And that’s how President Trump apparently wanted it. Oh, also he refused to condemn white supremacists directly. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Titans had players test positive for COVID-19 and Disney is laying off 28,000 park and cruise employees. So it was a bit of a relief to flash back to the awkward, amazing years of being a millennial teen with the Daily Beast’s Kevin Fallon, as we chat about the new season of Hulu’s hit show “Pen15.”

Stories By Trans People, For Trans People Sep 29, 2020
    Show notes

Over a million people worldwide have died of COVID-19. It may shock you to learn that Trump was not doing great financially when “The Apprentice” first aired. We’re apparently getting a sequel to last year’s remake of “The Lion King,” this time directed by Barry Jenkins? FarmVille is finally withering on the vine at the end of this year. And we’re joined by Imara Jones, the host of the new TransLash podcast, about creating space for trans people to tell their own stories and why she has hope for Black trans women’s futures.

Hey! Following The Money! Sep 28, 2020
    Show notes

President Trump only paid $750 in income taxes in 2016 and 2017, according to the New York Times. (Yes, that is $750, not $750 million or even $750 thousand.) Judge Amy Coney Barrett is Trump’s third pick for the Supreme Court and the Senate is set to hit the pedal to the floor to confirm her. (You can read all about her recent rulings here.) Mariah Carey was secretly doing vocals for an alt-rock band in the 1990s and we’re kinda shook. And we’re joined by BuzzFeed News’s Anthony Cormier and Azeen Ghoryashi to talk about the “Suspicious Activity” podcast and the way banks are letting illicit funds flow through their systems.

A Masterpiece Worthy Of DaVinki Sep 25, 2020
    Show notes

President Trump announced a plan to give old people free money for their prescriptions. (The money will supposedly arrive just before the election, two things that are totally not related.) Immigrant women in ICE detention say a doctor performed gynecological procedures on them without their consent. Lizzo is actually pretty done with the “body positivity” movement and we can’t really blame her. And these Hungarian-Canadian wrestler twins on TikTok absolutely made our week — and they say that they’re in on the joke.

This Isn’t About Jeffrey Epstein Sep 24, 2020
    Show notes

Protests broke out across the country, along with waves of sadness and exhaustion, with the news that nobody would be charged for Breonna Taylor’s death. Former “RuPaul’s Drag Race” contestants would like the fans to please, if they could, be less racist, that’d be great. We believe that everyday should be Bi Visibility Day, and so we bring to you our Salute to Bisexuals. And there’s a lot of lurid things about the Jeffrey Epstein abuse scandal — enough so that his actual victims are often forgotten. Tara Palmeri, host of the podcast Broken: Seeking Justice, joined us to talk about her attempt to change that.

Generation Burnout Is STRUGGLING Sep 23, 2020
    Show notes

None of the cops that shot Breonna Taylor were charged over her death. The Senate GOP investigated the Bidens actions towards Ukraine and found...nothing new. BTS fans have been breaking records donating to public radio stations after the group played NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert. And Anne Helen Peterson, author of the new book “Can’t Even: How Millennials Became The Burnout Generation,” is here to talk about why we’re also so damn tired.

    Julián Castro’s American Tour Sep 22, 2020
    Show notes

Today marked 200,000 US deaths from COVID-19. The UN General Assembly started up today and Trump spent a good chunk of his speech dunking on China. Ellen Degeneres’ opened up the new season of her show with an apology and it didn’t go over very well with current or former staffers. A Senate ad in Georgia is absolutely the most bonkerballs political spot of 2020 so far. And we got the chance to speak with former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro about his new podcast — ”Our America” — and the eviction crisis the pandemic has sparked.

    Remembering RBG Sep 21, 2020
    Show notes

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s passing was a major loss and a political earthquake. Senate Republicans seemed to have changed their mind since 2016 and think a new Supreme Court justice should be seated ASAP. Meanwhile, “Schitt’s Creek” swept the Emmys’ comedy categories, proving that Moira’s favorite season — (“awards”) — is the correct answer. BuzzFeed News’ Zoe Tillman gives us the rundown of Ginsburg’s legacy and how her loss may affect pending SCOTUS cases. And we’ve got a preview of tomorrow’s interview with former Housing Secretary Julian Castro — he gives us his thoughts on RBG’s passing and what Democrats should do about the seat she left open.

Regrets? We Have A Dew Sep 18, 2020
    Show notes

A federal judge ordered the US Postal Service to reboot its services back to July. The president will be launching the “1776 Commission” to finally teach kids that the US has never done anything wrong in its life ever. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston shared the most awkward scene possible during a table read, with an assist from Morgan Freeman. Paris Hilton is using her real voice from now on. And we made the horrible mistake of asking you, the audience, what’s in Red Lobster’s Mountain Dew Margarita. Ugh.
