In this episode of Busy Kids Love Music, we're honoring a song that has carried generations through struggle, hope, and celebration. Often called "The Black National Anthem," Lift Every Voice and Sing is more than just a piece of music—it's a powerful symbol of resilience, unity, and pride.

Episode 72 is our tribute to that legacy, shining a light on one of the most meaningful songs in American history.

📖 The Story Behind the Song Lift Every Voice and Sing began as a poem written in 1900 by James Weldon Johnson, a school principal in Jacksonville, Florida. His brother, John Rosamond Johnson, who taught music at the school, set the words to music. The very first performance featured a choir of 500 schoolchildren singing in honor of President Lincoln's birthday—marking the beginning of this song's remarkable journey.

The Stars and Stripes Forever Apr 12, 2022
    Show notes

If you've ever watched a Fourth of July parade, you've almost certainly heard this one.

Episode 68 is all about "The Stars and Stripes Forever" — John Philip Sousa's most famous march, and the official national march of the United States. We're pulling back the curtain on this piece: where it came from, what was going on in Sousa's life when he wrote it, and why it hit the way it did when it was first performed.

The story behind how this march got written is genuinely interesting (I don't want to spoil it here), and I think it's one of those moments where learning the backstory makes you hear the music completely differently.

We also spend some time looking at how a traditional military band march is actually put together — the structure, the sections, the way it builds. Sousa basically perfected this form, and once you know what to listen for, you'll start hearing it everywhere.

After you listen, I'd love for you and your kids to pull up a recording of "The Stars and Stripes Forever" from the links below and see if you can pick out the different sections. It's one of those pieces that's fun to just... listen to with new ears.

The Life of John Philip Sousa Mar 29, 2022
    Show notes

Episode #67 of Busy Kids Love Music marks the beginning of an exciting new series as we delve into the life and legacy of a musical luminary known as the March King – American composer John Philip Sousa. In past episodes, we've explored titles such as the King of Ragtime and Father of the Symphony, and now it's time to learn about the man behind the marches!

John Philip Sousa's musical journey took root in his role as the Director of the United States Marine Band, a position he held for many years. The Marine Band, under Sousa's leadership, became immensely popular, earning him the prestigious title of the March King. In a tradition that continues to this day (barring times of war), Sousa was granted permission by the president to take the Marine Band on its first tour, captivating audiences with their stellar performances.

As we navigate through Sousa's career, we'll explore a pivotal moment when he was approached to organize a separate civilian concert band. In the summer of 1892, Sousa bid farewell to his role as the Director of the Marine Band with a memorable concert on the White House lawn. The occasion was marked by a heartfelt presentation – a conductor's baton engraved by the members of the Marine Band, a symbol of their admiration and gratitude.

The legacy of this baton endured over the years, taking on a ceremonial significance. In 1953, Sousa's daughters returned the baton to the Marine Band, and today it is traditionally passed to the new Director of the Marine Band during the change of command ceremonies.

Join me in Episode #67 as we learn of Sousa's extraordinary life, exploring the melodies that defined an era and the impact of the March King on the world of American music. Whether you're a young listener or a seasoned music lover, Busy Kids Love Music ensures that the exploration of diverse musical traditions is accessible and enjoyable for the whole family.

    Water Music Mar 01, 2022
    Show notes

As we embark on the final chapter of our three-part series on George Frideric Handel, join me in Episode #65 of Busy Kids Love Music as we set sail through the enchanting world of "Water Music." This iconic collection of orchestral works, composed by Handel for a royal audience, promises to be a delightful finale to our exploration of the maestro's genius.

Water Music, a suite comprising three orchestral suites, had its grand debut on a magical July evening in 1717. Picture this: King George, for whom Handel served as the esteemed composer, boarding a royal barge at Whitehall Palace. Accompanied by wealthy friends, the regal party set forth on the Thames River toward Chelsea, immersed in the musical brilliance of Handel's compositions.

But the magic didn't stop there. A barge, laden with around fifty musicians, followed the king's vessel, serenading the waters with Handel's melodies. As if choreographed by the music itself, other boats and barges joined the aquatic procession, creating a floating symphony of sound and celebration.

Arriving at Chelsea, the king briefly disembarked before re-boarding later that night for the return journey. Such was King George's admiration for Water Music that he demanded its repetition several times during this royal cruise, immortalizing Handel's composition as a timeless masterpiece.

In Episode #65, we delve into the fascinating history behind Water Music, uncovering the tales of its grand premiere and the royal admiration that echoed through the ages. Whether you're a young listener or a seasoned music lover, Busy Kids Love Music ensures that the exploration of classical compositions is accessible and enjoyable for the whole family.
