Our Purpose Story Shares is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization devoted to inspiring reading practice and improving literacy skills. Our library is full of Relevant Reads—books that are both compelling and approachable for struggling teen and young adult readers. The Story Shares digital writing tool enables writers, educators, and students to create and publish Relevant Reads. These books cover a range of age, interest, and reading levels, and are also enhanced with features to make reading more accessible and fun. By leveraging the combined powers of great books and interactive web design, our literacy hub brings together a community to engage and support readers who struggle. The Problem The millions of readers who complete elementary school reading below grade level are unable to read about the characters and plots written for their age group. The stories they can read are meant for a less mature audience. At best, they hide this by reading only in private. At worst (and most often) they simply give up reading altogether. Given the daily importance of reading in all aspects of life, lacking this crucial skill negatively impacts everything from academic performance to everyday communication. As many as 90 million teens and adults in America lack crucial literacy skills1 70% of middle and high school students require some form of reading remediation2 26% of 12th graders graduate reading below the basic level.3 The older they get, the harder it becomes to find content that is both relevant for their age and readable at their level. Thus, readers are not motivated or interested, and they often stop reading altogether. Our Solution We help generate and then distribute new stories aimed at older students who read below grade level, specifically ensuring that the content is interesting at their age, and readable at their level. To do so, we are building the Story Shares Hub to bring together authors, readers, and educators. For authors, the Hub provides a digital book builder to guide the creation of just-right content, and access to a large group of potential readers. For readers and educators, the Hub provides a library of newly created just-right content, distributed on a platform with built-in reading assists to make it even more approachable. https://www.storyshares.org https://www.facebook.com/StoryShareLiteracy/ https://twitter.com/storyshares

Opuscope is developing Minsight: an app for creative users to design their own reality. With a headeset-first approach, our vision is to open the door for the proliferation of Virtual, Mixed and Augmented reality creations. I studied cognitive psychology with two main themes: usability and pedagogy. I early chose the usability part because I have always been curious and enthusiastic about new technologies, so when I learnt that psychology could match with them I knew this job was made for me. Concretely, I work on interfaces, whatever they are: website, software, video game, robot, VR/MR devices and much more without limit as long as there is an interface. This implies making sure they are easy to use, and fits their objectives and their target users. To do so, I: - evaluate existing interfaces to find ergonomics problems and suggest solutions to resolve them - design new interfaces from scratch to the point they are ready to be developed - make sure recommendations are well implemented by following development http://minsight.co https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexiabuclet https://twitter.com/getminsight

I never expected to launch a worldwide organization. Never ever thought I'd have to know about braille, or retinas, or genetic mutations. And I had no idea I would be dealt a double dose of darkness.... It was a one-two punch to the gut: both of my boys were diagnosed as blind when they were each 4 months old. I had never even met a blind person, yet I quickly learned how to find the tools blind children need and got them in the hands of my boys, literally. With the right foundation and a multitude of resources, they have become accomplished athletes, high achieving students, talented musicians, and social butterflies. Oh, and international Braille competition finalists too. In May 2011, I connected with other families living with the same rare disease my boys have, and launched a mission to fund a cure. No advanced degree. Never created a website before. Had no idea about grants, or IRB's... the list goes on. I learned how to build a team, nearby and remote, of people that know how to do the things I don't. I spend nearly every minute of every day networking with people that can help either medically, financially, or otherwise. No connection is too small, as I have found some of the greatest resources in the oddest places. In just six years, I've led our Foundation to make progress we thought would take much longer and people are calling on us daily to be a part of a miracle that seemed impossible less than a decade ago. We've raised over one million dollars, made history in the US Congress with the first ever rare eye disease resolution submitted in Braille, and have skyrocketed our little rare disease to the top of mind of many industry leaders - and I am just getting started. If you can help my mission to give options and resources to CRB1 LCA/RP patients, or if you need a dynamic speaker for your event, email me at curingretinalblindness@gmail.com or smedtalk@gmail.com http://kristinsmedley.com https://twitter.com/KristinSmedley https://www.facebook.com/thrivingblind/
