Episode 236 with Andrew Machota Apr 04, 2018

Hi! I’m Andrew, and I'm originally from Rolling Prairie, Indiana - a farm town of 500 people. I'm actually a CPA but left that behind to start my own business in 2015 as I saw a real need for people to meet and make genuine friends. I realized that it wasn't just me who didn't care to meet people at the bars, online or in other random places. FORGET using Bumble, Tinder, or Match to make friends! I want to meet people in real life. So I created an exclusive social club called New Town Connections and haven't looked back since. It's been life-changing not only to me but for many of our members. You can't put a price tag on what having a best friend is really worth. New Town Connections is the place where young professionals can establish long-lasting friendships centered around their common interests. By joining, our members gain insider access to hundreds of unique experiences across the Bay Area and create their own social network in real life. In addition to running New Town Connections, I just published my first book: "Friend Request Accepted - Connecting in a Disconnected World" to help people build genuine friendships in today's digital society. My friends call me #teamnosleep but I swear I really like to sleep! Sometimes I backpack around the world by myself, but I’m never really alone. I thrive on being around others and enjoy not spending time at home as I get my energy when I'm with people. Specialties include: master networking, introducing people, making friends, and running events. I have the energy of 5 people and I enjoy using it every day for the benefit of others. You can message me at andrew@newtownconnections.com or on my cell at 317-417-2973. I’m proud to be representing my home state and always more than happy to meet new people. If you know anyone who could utilize my company’s services, then send them my way! https://www.newtownconnections.com/ https://twitter.com/newtownconnect https://www.linkedin.com/company/new-town-connections/ https://www.amazon.com/Friend-Request-Accepted-Connecting-Disconnected/dp/0999248901

Episode 234 with Judge Michael Newman Mar 27, 2018
    Show notes

United States Magistrate Judge and Federal Bar Association’s Judicial Ambassador for Civics and former national president. The Honorable Michael J. Newman is a United States Magistrate Judge in the Southern District of Ohio, former national president of the Federal Bar Association and continues his FBA involvement as the Judicial Ambassador for Civics. The FBA has more than 20,000 members and is the pre-eminent bar association for lawyers and judges in the Federal Courts. For 2016-17, the FBA is focusing on Civics and Service to Others. To that end, Judge Newman is leading the FBA’s national initiatives regarding civics education, the SOLACE program, legal assistance to veterans, and access to justice. Judge Newman has a long history of community activities and giving back to others. In 2010, he was honored to receive the Boots Fisher Public Service Award, given annually to one lawyer in the United States for “exemplary community, public and charitable service.” Such involvement continues; in 2014, Judge Newman was instrumental in creating a lawyer referral program for military personnel at Wright Patterson Air Force Base - to assist them in finding affordable counsel. He now presides over the first Federal Veterans Court in the Southern District of Ohio and is an active participant in Reentry Court and the Restored Citizens Project, two Federal Court efforts in Dayton designed to help formerly incarcerated individuals successfully return to society. Prior to taking the bench, he was a partner in the Cincinnati office of Dinsmore & Shohl LLP, where he represented both plaintiffs and defendants, and practiced in the areas of labor and employment, business litigation and appellate litigation. He chaired the firm’s Labor & Employment Appellate Practice Group, created and ran the firm’s pro bono appellate program in the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and served on the firm’s Diversity Committee. He was named a “Leading Lawyer,” an “Ohio Super Lawyer” and one of the “Best Lawyers in America in Labor & Employment Law.” After being appointed as a federal judge, Judge Newman chaired the FBA’s national Magistrate Judge Task Force. He was recognized thereafter by the Federal Magistrate Judges Association for “valuable and dedicated service to all Magistrate Judges.” The FBA honored him in 2014 with a President’s Award for his “leadership [and] extraordinary service, commitment and guidance.” Judge Newman attended the Advanced Mediation Program at Harvard Law School and is frequently called upon to mediate complex federal disputes. He was a mediator and arbitrator while in private practice. Judge Newman graduated with honors from the Washington College of Law at American University, and attended New York University as an undergraduate. He and his wife, Rachel, are the proud parents of triplet daughters now in elementary school. Episode 232 with Katy Tynan Mar 19, 2018
    Show notes

Today's talent is looking for more meaning, more flexibility, and more opportunity. I help organizations change how they think about talent strategy, and develop solutions to eliminate out-of-date practices. If you're struggling to attract great people, create an inspiring culture, or develop a strong leadership pipeline, we should talk. Talent strategy and organizational development consultant with expertise in the development of high performing culture through employee experience and customer focus. Bestselling author and keynote speaker on the evolution of work, and the power of diversity and flexibility as drivers of business results. About the Book Julie’s having a very bad day. She’s a new manager, and her top performer has resigned to escape her, and her own manager is looking on with a skeptical eye. This is the story of her turnaround. Being a first-time manager is a tough job. If you were Julie, what would you do? Wouldn’t anyone, given the choice of taking on a leadership role (with a raise), or staying put, have done the same? But no one prepared her for developing co-workers, her former peers, while producing as before and leading the team. Now she’s in over her head. Author Katy Tynan understands. In her new book, How Did I Not See This Coming? A Manager’s Guide to Avoiding Total Disaster, Tynan unlocks the truths about management, showing that first-time managers are basically on a journey without a map. It’s not that employers aren’t investing in their new managers, she says, or that the people in leadership don’t care, but they are no longer close to the raw experience of being a new manager. What’s more, most management books are written by experts who lack the memory of first-time failure. In How Did Not See This Coming?, Tynan tells the fictional story of Julie, a onetime star producer, to illustrate how a new manager can successfully make the shift from a role without leadership responsibilities to one with them. Along the way, Tynan offers the five basic truths about management—starting with recognizing team values and strengths—truths that can be learned by anyone. You, too, can be the manager everyone’s talking about—in a good way—because you’re the one who figured it out.
