Show notes
On the latest episode of the Billieve Podcast, hosts John Boccacino and Jamie D’Amico continue their offseason State of the Bills series of podcasts by breaking down and reviewing the contributions the Bills got from their wide receivers during the 2020 season.
Led by All Pro wideouts Stefon Diggs and Cole Beasley, Buffalo's aerial attack blossomed into one of the best in the NFL as quarterback Josh Allen enjoyed a breakout, MVP-caliber season as the Bills transformed into a pass-first offense in 2020.
Diggs set franchise records for receptions (127) and receiving yards (1,535), becoming the first Bill to ever lead the league in those categories while adding eight touchdown catches. Beasley nearly posted his first 1,000 yard season, hauling in 82 receptions for 967 yards with four TDs, while rookie Gabriel Davis (35 receptions, 599 yards, seven TDs) emerged as a solid No. 3 receiving threat. John Brown battled through injuries and missed seven games, amassing 33 receptions for 458 yards with three TDs.
We discuss why the Bills have one of the best wide receiver quartets in all of football, analyze how Diggs emerged as one of the top 2-3 wideouts in the game while helping Allen make a quantum leap in his progression, explore the reasons Beasley is one of the top slot receivers in the league, and speculate on whether general manager Brandon Beane will bring back talented speedster John Brown, restructure his deal, or cut him.
Speaking of the No. 2 wideout, we dissect Davis' rookie season and explore whether he is ready to step into the No. 2 role opposite Diggs. We also discuss what the team should do with gadget weapon Isaiah McKenzie and return man Andre Roberts, and assess whether the Bills have any breakout candidates among the rest of the receivers, a group that includes Jake Kumerow, Isaiah Hodgins, Duke Williams, and Tanner Gentry.
