The transfer portal, staff changes and how Ohio State will handle its quarterback situation in the Cotton Bowl Dec 04, 2023
    Show notes

Ryan Day spoke for the first time since Ohio State's third-straight loss to Michigan as he reacted to his team being selected to face Missouri in the Cotton Bowl.

That matchup with the Tigers was far from the most important topic of discussion. Day instead discusses the state of his quarterback room, how OSU may handle a bowl prep where his team could look very different on Dec. 29, potential staff turnover, the transfer portal and much more.

On this Monday episode of Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means, Nathan Baird and Andrew Gillis break down everything Day had to say.

Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk.

Ohio State's All-Big Ten offense honors and what must happen for it to make the College Football Playoff Nov 30, 2023
    Show notes

Ohio State no longer controls its own postseason destiny, but that doesn't mean it can't still make the College Football Playoff.

As they did last season, the Buckeyes have positioned themselves to potentially make the postseason as a one-loss non-conference champion if a few dominoes fall in their favor this weekend.

After revealing which OSU offense players earned All-Big Ten honors, Stephen Means, Nathan Baird and Andrew Gillis map out that path. A year ago it only needed one thing to happen. But this time it'll need help from various teams whether that be in the form of a few higher seeds taking care of business or a few lower causing a few upsets.

Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk.

    • How many more times can Ryan Day lose to Michigan before he's on the hot seat?

    • Which team was better between Ohio State's 2022 and 2023 rosters?

    • A rant about a Kyle McCord quote being taken out of context

Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk.

    • Is Kyle McCord the unchallenged starter in 2024 and should he be?

    • How should the Buckeyes attack the transfer portal this offseason?

Breaking down why Ohio State lost a third-straight game to Michigan: Buckeye Talk Podcast Nov 27, 2023
    Show notes

Two days after watching Ohio State's 30-24 loss to Michigan, Stephen Means and Nathan Baird sit down to rewatch The Game and go through everything that went wrong.

And they literally go through everything as two used a Monday episode of Buckeye Talk to discuss a program that is now dealing with the reality of being on a three-game losing streak to its rival.

The first segment deals with Kyle McCord and whether they think his ceiling is high enough to eventually be the quarterback Ohio State needs him to be long-term. But the better question is whether he's capable of ever getting to that ceiling, at least during his time in Columbus as his flaws finally cost Ohio State a game.

Following the break they dive into everything Ryan Day. His playcalling, how he's handled the rivalry, his staff decisions and much more on a head coach heading into a career-defining offseason.

They wrap things up with some defensive talk and some thoughts on a wide receiver room that didn't quite live up to expectations this season.

Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk.

What Ohio State's third-straight loss to Michigan means for the program Nov 26, 2023
    Show notes

Ohio State has now lost three straight games to Michigan as it once again watched its season end at the hands of its rival.

So where does this program go now?

On this postgame episode of Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means, Nathan Baird and Andrew Gillis react to the Buckeyes' 30-24 loss. That reaction includes a look into the psyche of the fanbase by way of the Texters in how they feel about a program that is now on the wrong side of the rivalry.

The trio also look at what this means for the program at large and the rest of the 2023 season give OSU's now-slim chances of making the College Football Playoff.

Previewing Ohio State’s road game against Michigan Nov 24, 2023
    Show notes

The Game has finally arrived in what is yet another matchup between Ohio State and Michigan where both teams are undefeated.

Once again, this game will decide who heads to the Big Ten Championship Game next weekend and most likely locks up a spot in the College Football Playoff. It's also the final version of the rivalry game that will ever mean as much as it does this year. Plus some of the off-the-field drama only adds to the magnitude of the moment.

On this Friday episode of Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means, Nathan Baird and Andrew Gillis preview The Game from a football perspective.

Then Tyler Shoemaker joins the pod as usual to provide some of the best bets of the week both in relation to OSU and around the country. Then Nathan and Andrew rejoin Stephen as the trio gives their game picks. Plus some of the Texters give their best idea for what GameDay signs they would make.

Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk.

Ryan Day’s legacy, Jim Harbaugh and an Ohio State recruiting class’ last shot at beating Michigan Nov 22, 2023
    Show notes

This might be the biggest version of The Game that Ohio State and Michigan have ever been a part of.

Part of the reason for that is what is at stake on both sides with a win or a loss. Stephen Means, Nathan Baird, Andrew Gillis and the Texters get into every bit of it on this almost 2.5-hour episode of Buckeye Talk.

Ryan Day is trying to avoid losing three straight games to the Wolverines, even if there might one day be an asterisk next to the first two. His first full recruiting class in 2021 is trying to live up to the hype it arrived with while also trying to get their first pair of gold pants finally. Then there’s the Kyle McCord element of this in how much this can impact his legacy as OSU’s latest starting quarterback.

This episode is all about being hyperbolic leaving no room for middle ground. It’s a chance to find out where you stand even if you aren’t the most extreme version of that stance. As Ohio State heads into the biggest game it’s played in during the Day era, it’s time to see how a fanbase feels about its head coach and football program.

Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk.

Does Ohio State football respect the Michigan football program? Nov 21, 2023
    Show notes

Numerous members of the Ohio State football program spoke on Tuesday ahead of an all-important game against Michigan.

Head coach Ryan Day discusses how the Buckeyes are managing a week filled with a ton of emotions. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles discussed how much what happened last season is impacting how he’s planning for this season’s game. Then Kyle McCord, Marvin Harrison Jr., Cody Simon, Emeka Egbuka and Denzel Burke gave their thoughts on the rivalry game.

Burke was the only person amongst that group to show any level of emotion toward what’s coming on Saturday while everyone else tried their best to keep things vanilla.

On this episode of Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means, Nathan Baird and Andrew Gillis discuss the vibes around the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and much more heading into The Game.

Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk.

Is the future of Michigan’s program on the line on Saturday against Ohio State? Nov 20, 2023
    Show notes

Jim Harbaugh spoke with the media on Monday to discuss the Ohio State-Michigan game and now it's time to talk about it.

Cleveland.com sent its rivalry reporter Jimmy Watkins up to Ann Arbor and afterward, Jimmy joined the rest of the Buckeye Talk crew to discuss the game from Michigan's perspective. That meant determining how healthy the Wolverines are heading into The Game and what the vibe is around a program that is trying to get ready for a rivalry game while also dealing with a scandal.

There are numerous reasons why this game matters to the Buckeyes and we will spend all week talking about it. But this might be the end of the line for the Harbaugh era and everything that's led up to it has made it just as significant for that side.

In what in many ways feels like the last dance, Jimmy joins Stephen Means, Nathan Baird and Andrew Gillis to discuss everything that's on the line for Michigan on Saturday.

Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk.
