Drafting former Buckeyes as future head coaches, from Terry McLaurin to Kenny Guiton Jul 04, 2022
    Show notes

On this Monday Buckeye Talk celebrating the Fourth of July, Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means are here with a draft.

This is based off the idea that 15 years ago, both Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman and Ohio State receivers coach Brian Hartline were Ohio State football players. So now, let's took 15 years into the future, and imagine which people associated with the Buckeyes could be Ohio State's head coach, or a head coach at another Big Ten or major college football program, in 2037.

Doug, Nathan and Stephen each drafted six people, one each from these six categories, all of them either one-time Ohio State players or coaches:

    • Current head coaches anywhere
    • Current Ohio State assistants
    • Current assistants anywhere else
    • Current Ohio State players
    • Former Ohio State players not currently coaching
    • Wild card

Who went first? Who might surprise you? Listen to the latest Buckeye Talk to find out. Thanks for making us part of your week, and enjoy your Independence Day.

On this Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises and Nathan Baird report back from Friday morning's news conference with Kristina Johnson and Gene Smith on the Ohio State view of Big Ten expansion.

They discuss the future; why revenue sharing in the Big Ten will remain equal; Smith's brief, frustrated dalliance with Ohio State going independent; what text subscribers said about USC and UCLA in a survey; and whether the Big Ten won this whole expansion thing.

There are questions and answers, which makes it another Buckeye Talk.

Is Michigan blowing its chance at a recruiting surge off its Ohio State football win? Jun 29, 2022
    Show notes

Michigan is coming off its first win over the Ohio State football program in over a decade allowing the Wolverines to win the Big Ten Championship and make their College Football Playoff debut. It would be understandable to think that the program could build on that with a fruitful summer on the recruiting trail helping close the gap between them and the Buckeyes some. Instead the opposite has happened. OSU has continued building one of the nation's best classes while Michigan has just lost the only top 100 recruit its 2023 class had. Has Michigan missed its opportunity?

Stephen Means and Nathan Baird discuss that and more. Thanks as always for listening to Buckeye Talk.

    Predicting Ohio State football’s 2023 recruiting class 2.0 Jun 28, 2022
    Show notes

Commitment season is upon us for Ohio State and the rest of college football.

Stephen Means is joined by the return of Nathan Baird from baby duty as the two project the Buckeyes’ 2023 recruiting class answering these important questions.

    • How many 5-stars and top 100 recruits will the class have?

    • Will Kayin Lee be the only commitment of the week?

    • What’s going on with five-star Caleb Downs?

    • Will this class end up with a quarterback.

And much more. Thanks as always for listening to Buckeye Talk.

Will Drew Allar or Sean Clifford be the QB when Penn State hosts Ohio State? Jun 27, 2022
    Show notes

We're up to Game 8 of the Ohio State season on our Buckeye Talk game previews for 2022. On this episode, Doug Lesmerises talks to Bob Flounders of Pennlive.com about Ohio State's trip to Penn State on Oct. 29.

    • What's the state of Penn State football and should the Nittany Lions be prepping soon for their own playoff season after watching Michigan last year?
    • How will Penn State plan to keep up with Ohio State in the NIL world?
    • Will veteran Sean Clifford or freshman Drew Allar be the quarterback by the time the Buckeyes come to town?
    • How major of a hire is new defensive coordinator Manny Diaz for Penn State?
    • Will freshman Nick Singleton solve the run game problems of a year ago?

And much more. Thanks as always for listening to Buckeye Talk.

What if C.J. Stroud didn't pick Ohio State? BuckeyeFly Effect Jun 24, 2022
    Show notes

On this BuckeyeFly Effect, Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means consider an intriguing What If.

What if quarterback C.J. Stroud didn't pick Ohio State late in the recruiting process in the Class of 2020?

    • Where might Stroud have gone?
    • What would Stroud's career look like right now?
    • What effect would that have had on OSU QBs Kyle McCord, Jack Miller, Quinn Ewers and others?
    • Would the Buckeyes have been a national contender last season, and a title favorite this season?
    • Would Ewers be getting ready to start for the Buckeyes in 2022?
    • Would the view of Ryan Day change at all?

There was no guarantee that the Buckeyes would get the Southern California quarterback. So this isn't a crazy idea. That means it's an interesting edition of BuckeyeFly Effect on Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com.

Brian Hartline or Marcus Freeman? Is this a make-or-break season for Ohio State football? And more Rapid Fire Jun 22, 2022
    Show notes

On this Wednesday Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com, Doug Lesmerises and Stephen Means are taking questions from text subscribers. Among them:

    • Is Marcus Freeman or Brian Hartline the more likely candidate to be Ohio State's next head coach?
    • Is this a make-or break-year for the Buckeyes in terms of their national status?
    • Is Emeka Egbuka or Julian Fleming more underrated entering this season?
    • Would we rather write a long story or record a long podcast?
    • What will Evan Pryor's role be?
    • How about Zach Harrison's role?
    • How about C.J. Hicks?
    • And what do we miss most about Nathan Baird, who will return next week?

Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk.

Carnell Tate's commitment and the future of Ohio State's receivers room Jun 21, 2022
    Show notes

On this Tuesday Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means and Doug Lesmerises talk about the latest five-star pledge to the Buckeyes.

Ohio State landed a verbal commitment from receiver Carnell Tate on Monday, and he became the highest-rated player in Ohio State's 2023 recruiting class.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound receiver is ranked as the No. 3 receiver and No. 28 overall player in the 247sports composite ratings. Stephen and Doug discuss how Ohio State landed him, how he fits into the OSU roster, and what the Ohio State depth chart at receiver looks like over the next three years.

Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk.

What? Ohio State hasn't beaten Iowa in eight seasons? Jun 20, 2022
    Show notes

On this Monday episode of Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises is joined by John Steppe of the Cedar Rapids Gazette and thegazette, com to preview Ohio State's seventh game of the 2022 football season -- against Iowa in Ohio Stadium on Oct. 22, with the Buckeyes coming off a bye.

Ohio State hasn't beaten Iowa since 2013, primarily because the teams have played just once since then, and the Hawkeyes upset the Buckeyes in Iowa City in 2017.

Iowa is coming off a 10-4 season that included a loss to Michigan in the Big Ten Championship Game. Kirk Ferentz is entering his 24th season as the head coach of the Hawkeyes. There's a quarterback decision to be made, and a search for some playmakers is on. But led by linebacker Jack Campbell and defensive coordinator Phil Parker, the defense should be pretty good again.

It's the Hawkeyes back in Columbus, and it's time to talk about it on the seventh episode of Buckeye Talk breaking down a 2022 OSU opponent. Thanks for listening.
