Special Episode: ‘Billy Joel Project’ with Phil Geoffrey Bond of the Broadeay Ensemble
Aug 20, 2025
On today’s episode, Matt Tamanini is in conversation with Grammy-nominated record producer Phil Geoffrey Bond to discuss the release of the incredible new album “The Billy Joel Project.” After years of focusing on “Sondheim Unplugged” concerts and albums, Bond returned to a concept from years ago for this new album while officially establishing a name for the stable of storytellers.
The recently established Broadway Ensemble features 11 theatrical performers with nearly 50 combined Broadway credits. The cast tackles 24 songs from the iconic catalog of Bill Joel songs in a reverential, but a musical theatrely unique way.
Stagecraft: Bubba Weiler on “Well, I’ll Let You Go”
Aug 19, 2025
The Stagecraft podcast is hosted by Jan Simpson. It is a series of interviews with playwrights (and musical book writers) of shows opening on Broadway and off-Broadway.
Bubba Weiler (playwright) is a Brooklyn-based playwright and actor. His plays include The Saviors; Well, I’ll Let You Go; and This Room is For Everybody, among others. A graduate of NYU’s Playwrights Horizons Theater School, he studied playwriting under Jen Silverman and Roy Kendall. He has been in residence at Berkeley Rep’s The Ground Floor and Mercury Store. As an actor, he played Scorpius Malfoy in the first American cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway and was recently seen in Swing State by Rebecca Gilman at the Minetta Lane for which his performance was nominated for a Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel, and Outer Critics Circle Award.
Fresh from winning a Drama Desk Award for Ken Urban’s Danger and Opportunity, Obie winner Jack Serio is set to direct Bubba Weiler’s Well, I’ll Let You Go at The Space at Irondale (85 S Oxford St, Brooklyn). This new American play, which marks Weiler’s professional playwriting debut, will run from July 29 – September 12, 2025, with an opening set for Thursday, August 7. Tickets are now on sale at www.letyougonyc.com.
EXTENDED. 12 PERFORMANCES ONLY. must close September 12 quincy tyler bernstine FINAL PERFORMANCE AUGUST 29.
Tony nominee Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Obie winner Michael Chernus (Apple TV’s Severance, Peacock’s Devil In Disguise: John Wayne Gacy) lead an ensemble cast that includes Cricket Brown (Judgment Day, Park Avenue Armory), Will Dagger (Good Night, and Good Luck), Lortel and Obie winner Emily Davis (Is This A Room), Danny McCarthy (The Minutes, To Kill a Mockingbird), Drama Desk nominee Constance Shulman (The Rose Tattoo, Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black), and Amelia Workman (American Son, The Antiquities).
Well, I’ll Let You Go marks Chernus’ return to the New York City stage after 11 years.
Set in a small Midwestern town, Well, I’ll Let You Go is a portrait of a woman and a community in crisis. Alternately vast and personal in scope, shifting backwards and forwards in time, this expansive, yet incredibly intimate, debut play sifts through the rubble of a town, a marriage, and a life built on an American Dream that’s crumbled.
“Growing up a child actor in Chicago, I spent most nights after school in one storefront theater or another,” says playwright Bubba Weiler. “At these vital institutions, I got to watch some of the world’s best directors, writers, and actors develop intimate and urgent new plays and, secretly, I started writing my own. When my acting career moved me to New York, I kept writing and eventually I had a little stack of plays with nowhere to take them. But then I started seeing Jack Serio’s work, which took me back to those Chicago storefronts. His sensitive, detailed, and actor-centric approach makes him the perfect person to helm Well, I’ll Let You Go. I’m humbled with the all-star cast and team he’s assembled to paint this portrait of a community in crisis. I truly can’t think of a better way to finally share one of my plays with audiences.”
“While New Yorkers may be familiar with Bubba Weiler as a skilled actor, I’ve long known that he was also secretly skilled as a playwright,” says director Jack Serio. “Well, I’ll Let You Go is a portrait of a small midwestern community reckoning with what’s left of the American Dream. I’m so proud to be able to continue to make this kind of actor-driven, intimate, work outside of a traditional Off-Broadway model. And I’m excited to push the size and scope of that work at The Space at Irondale, one of the most glorious and magical spaces in the city. It is a space rich with character, both expansive and incredibly intimate. I have no doubt it will be the perfect theater for Bubba’s sprawling ensemble play and the home to a completely singular theatrical experience this summer.”
The creative team for Well, I’ll Let You Go includes Frank J. Oliva (scenic design), Avery Reed (costume design), Drama Desk and Obie-winner Stacey Derosier (lighting design), Avi Amon (original music), Taylor Williams, CSA (casting), and Zach Brecheen (production stage manager).
Well, I’ll Let You Go is produced by Jacob Stuckelman, Andrew Patino, Kyle Rogers, Matt Krauss of Regular People along with Patrick Catullo, The Cohn Sisters, Shira Friedman, and Danny Kopel. Jacob Stuckelman and Christian Palomares of Regular People serve as General Managers. Andrew Patino of Regular People serves as Director of Marketing. David Manella at Loeb & Loeb LLP serves as Production Counsel.
Performances of Well, I’ll Let You Go will take place July 29 – September 12, 2025, at The Space at Irondale, located at 85 S Oxford St in Brooklyn. Critics are welcome as of Saturday, August 2 at 7pm for an opening on Thursday, August 7. The performance schedule is Mondays through Fridays at 7:00pm and Saturdays at 2pm and 7pm. Ali Ewoldt: When You Wish Upon a Star August 10 & December 26, 2025
A dream came true for Ali Ewoldt when she became the first Asian-American to star on Broadway as Christine Daaé in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. It was one of many such dreams that have come true for this Broadway star, including landing major Broadway roles in Les Misérables and The King and I.
On August 10th on the 54 Below stage, Ali Ewoldt will share those dreams with you, singing the famous songs she performed on Broadway, as well as the equally famous songs she performed on her journey to the Great White Way: Disney hits, musical theater classics, and more. This will be a show bursting with Broadway hits by an actress who has walked the walk and sung the songs!
Ali Ewoldt: When You Wish Upon a Star will be produced and directed by legendary NYC impresario, Scott Siegel. A biography of Rodgers and Hammerstein has a title SOME ENCHANTED EVENINGS which cites one of their famous songs from one of their Tony-winning musical.
The title of Charles Strouse’s memoir is PUT ON A HAPPY FACE, citing one of his famous songs from one of his Tony-winning musicals.
However, the title of a book about the collaboration between two Tony-winning songwriters uses as its title a song they wrote for a show that not only failed to win a Tony, but also never even played Broadway.
What’s the song that’s also the name of the book, and who are the songwriters?

He won multiple Tonys for the books he provided for musicals, but he also wrote a play that closed in Philadelphia.
If you take the first two words of that flop’s title, you’ll have the name of a person who has never appeared on Broadway, but one who did provide voices for a play that opened in the first decade of this new century.
It received one and only one Tony nomination – but that one nomination resulted in a win. Who’s the writer? What was the play? Who provided the voices and in what show did he do it? Finally, who won the Tony for that show?

1) BOOP! The Musical, the award-winning Broadway show, will conclude its run on July 13 after 25 previews and 112 performances. Hailed as “the feel-good musical of the year,” it stars Jasmine Amy Rogers in a breakout role as Betty Boop, supported by an acclaimed cast and creative team. Directed by Jerry Mitchell with music by David Foster, the show has earned multiple accolades, including Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards. Inspired by Max Fleischer’s iconic cartoon, the musical follows Betty’s quest for a simple day off that turns into a colorful, music-filled adventure of love and self-discovery in NYC. The production dazzled with eye-popping choreography, standout costume design by Gregg Barnes, and a vibrant book by Bob Martin. Jasmine Amy Rogers earned a Theatre World Award and multiple honors for her sensational performance. Featuring a talented ensemble and beloved characters, BOOP! brought the classic animated icon to life with modern flair and heart.
2) Vineyard Theatre’s 2025–2026 Off-Broadway season will feature the world premieres of two bold new works. Anne Washburn’s The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire, directed by Steve Cosson and co-produced with The Civilians, opens the season this fall. Set in Northern California, the play explores an off-the-grid community thrown into existential crisis after a sudden death. Described as a mix of “death, a pageant, a rescue, a resurrection, pigs, and the act of saying grace,” it reunites Washburn and Cosson following their collaborations on Mr. Burns and A Devil at Noon. In spring 2026, Eisa Davis’ ||: Girls :||: Chance :||: Music :||—a Vineyard commission—debuts under the direction of Pam MacKinnon. The play centers on four gifted teens in a Berkeley music program, blending coming-of-age themes with live, improvisatory music as they confront personal and global upheavals. A winter production is yet to be announced. Tickets are available through Vineyard memberships.
3) The Phantom of the Opera, now titled Masquerade, is set to arrive in New York under the direction of Tony winner Diane Paulus. Known for her visionary work on Pippin, Hair, and Jagged Little Pill, Paulus will bring an immersive reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s beloved musical to a venue on 57th Street. Revealed through a mysterious letter from the “Opera Ghost,” the production promises a radical departure from Harold Prince’s original staging, incorporating interactive elements in the style of Sleep No More. Guests will be masked, encouraged to dress extravagantly in black, white, or silver, and to expect a dynamic, movement-friendly experience. Ticket access begins June 30, but only for those who sign the Phantom’s Ledger at MasqueradeNYC.com. The show will feature six weeks of previews and is described by the Opera Ghost as an event “like no other,” performed by a cast of “exceptional ability.”
4) Lynne Meadow, artistic director of Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC) since 1972, has announced she will step down, marking the end of a historic 53-year tenure. Under her leadership, MTC grew from a small Off-Off-Broadway space into a major institution with multiple Off-Broadway theaters and a Broadway house, producing over 600 shows and earning 31 Tony Awards, including for Eureka Day in 2025. Meadow will remain as artistic advisor during the leadership transition. Renowned for championing living American and international writers, she helped launch landmark works like Doubt, Proof, and Ruined. Meadow’s departure follows the exit of longtime collaborator Barry Grove and comes amid a generational shift in New York theatre leadership, with recent exits at Lincoln Center, Roundabout, and Second Stage. Meadow, a Tony-nominated director and Theater Hall of Fame inductee, now plans to focus on directing and teaching. MTC continues its Broadway run with Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends through June 29.
5) Broadway in Bryant Park, the free lunchtime concert series featuring current Broadway productions, will return July 10 at the famed Manhattan park.
Presented by iHeartRadio Broadway, the weekly concerts take place 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM on the Bryant Park stage each Thursday through July 31.

MP: Melissa Errico Sings Sondheim @ 54 Below, June 20 & 21, 2025 Stephen Sondheim is the musical north star of Tony®-nominated Broadway star and writer Melissa Errico. In a sparkling evening of his sublime songs side by side with engaging stories of his craft and life, Errico’s admiration for her friend and teacher — she refers to his wisdom and inspiration as “life-saving, sheer joy, giving us all creative courage ” — is always evident. This 2-night only New York engagement is a preview of her upcoming concert hall debut in London.
Melissa worked with Stephen Sondheim on productions of Sunday in the Park with George, John Doyle’s hit production of Passion, and Do I Hear A Waltz? at City Center. She played the Baker’s Wife in a concert run of Into The Woods. She has sung Sondheim on PBS, “Finishing The Hat” for Poetry In America, and on her own filmed solo special. She sang and spoke a tribute to him in her Carnegie Hall debut in 2022 with The New York Pops. She has made two all-Sondheim albums, with a third on the way. Musical direction by Tedd Firth.
Featuring Tony winner® Len Cariou (original Sweeney in Sweeney Todd) on June 21 only.
Jazz trumpet star Bruce Harris (“one of 5 young jazz musicians you should know”- Wynton Marsalis) is featured in the jazz quartet. Also joined by David Finck on bass and Eric Halvorson on drums.
MP: 54 Sings Broadway’s Greatest Hits! @ 54 Below, June 21, 2025 “Scott Siegel’s 54 Sings Broadway’s Greatest Hits is among the most successful series of cabaret shows of the 21st century. The reason for the series’ success (every show is sold out) is that Siegel gathers together some of the very best voices from the Broadway, cabaret, and for this show, the opera world to perform a well-thought-out collection of some of the best songs from Broadway musicals,” Ron Forman, Cabaret Scenes Magazine
If you skip through cast albums just to hear the very best songs in each show, this is the nightclub concert event for you. If you love the classics of the Great White Way, come and hear the songs that made Broadway great, that made your heart soar, that you used to sing (maybe still do) in the shower! But at 54 Below, you will hear the greatest Broadway songs of all time performed by today’s greatest stars, singing them straight up, the way you want to hear them!
And who better to produce/direct/host this show than the creator of Town Hall’s critically acclaimed Broadway by the Year series, Scott Siegel, creator of more than 500 major concert events centered on Broadway music! 54 Sings Broadway’s Greatest Hits! will be a thrilling night that you won’t forget…
Music direction by Ron Abel on June 21 and by Michael Lavine on Jul 12.
The performance on June 21 featured:
John Easterlin (4-time Grammy winner, The Phantom of the Opera) Ben Jones (Musical theater, opera, & symphony concert star) Allison Megan Joyce Demiah Latreece Chris Scanlon Michael Winther (Drama Desk nominee, 7 Broadway shows)

In their conversation, Matt and Kelsie talk about how her life of never feeling like she fit in led to the writing of the song, why this is the first time that she has really felt like she found her sound, and whether or not there might be more Broadway in her future.

MP: The Untitled Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical @ Signature Theatre (Arlington, VA), through July 13, 2025 A collision of politics, counterculture and rock and roll in human form, Hunter S. Thompson is impossible to pin down. Careening from the 1940s to 2005, Thompson invents Gonzo journalism, attempts to take down a corrupt president, and quests for equality for his fellow weirdos, outsiders and freaks. However, this anti-hero’s drug-fueled tornado leaves a trail of destruction as he grapples with his legacy in a world that has left him behind.

Special Episode: Haven Burton on the joys of being the villain in ‘The Little Mermaid’
Jun 10, 2025
On today’s episode, Matt Tamanini is in conversation with Broadway favorite Haven Burton, who is currently co-starring in the Paper Mill Playhouse’s production of “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” as Ursula.
From growing up as a devoted Ariel fan to relishing the opportunity to dive into the deep backstory of the Sea Witch, Haven is having something of a full-circle moment with this show, and one that she is hoping begins her villain era. In addition to talking about all aspects of this show and production, they discuss her more than a decade run of voicing Pokémon characters, most famously Serena.
“The Little Mermaid” is currently scheduled to run through June 29 at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey.

News:
Barry Gordin (1952–2025) carried the heart and soul of the Drama Desk. Serving as Editor in Chief of DramaDesk.org, Barry donated endless hours to photographing all of the organization’s events, managing our website, and championing theater and the arts in New York City, as well as in the Hamptons. Barry’s photographs and stories will long be remembered for capturing the cultural lives of those communities and the people who helped create them.
As the Sondheim lyric goes, Barry was a real “Broadway baby.” His distinctive eye and enduring enthusiasm for the arts inspired the popular column “Gordin’s View” in Dan’s Papers, offering readers a lively window into theater openings, galas, and benefits. As editor-in-chief of Theaterlife.com, he championed the stage with dedication and flair.
A longtime New Yorker, Barry fulfilled many roles. The founder and owner of Barry Gordin Hair Design, a boutique salon nestled on Morton Street in the West Village, he earned a reputation as a gifted stylist. With his artistry and generosity, his warmth and gentle nature, he served as trusted confidant, and a source of inspiration to his clients, friends, and colleagues.
Barry shared his life with his loving partner of 42½ years, writer and actor Patrick Christiano. The two were married on the roof garden of Stewart Hall on July 15, 2015. Together they formed a creative and devoted partnership—both personal and professional.
A viewing will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, at Greenwich Village Funeral Home, 199 Bleecker St. A funeral service will follow on Monday in East Hampton at 2 p.m., where Barry found joy and community for many years.

Peter’s Brainteaser:
They’re the first words of a song heard in a Tony-winning musical of the ‘70s.
The words also constitute the full title of a Sondheim musical.
Understand that the name of the Sondheim musical is not the title of the song from the Tony-winning musical – but only its first words.
Hint: The one and only performer in that musical who won a supporting Tony was not one of the two who sang the song I’m looking for.

Special Episode: Kip Williams explains ‘Dorian Gray’s Cine-Theatre
Jun 01, 2025
On today’s episode, Matt Tamanini is in conversation with the adapter and Tony-nominated director of one of the most innovative and engaging productions on Broadway in years, “The Picture of Dorian Gray.” Kip Williams began experimenting with what he now calls Cine-Theatre at the Sydney Theatre Company in Australia when he was the company’s artistic director.
In their conversation, Matt asks Kip how he defines the term Cine-Theatre and how and when he chooses to employ it. They also discuss Sarah Snook’s Herculean performance in the show, Kip’s forthcoming production of “Dracula” starring Cynthia Erivo, and the in-development film adaptation of “Dorian Gray.”
Special Episode: Glenn Davis on the purpose of ‘Purpose’
May 31, 2025
On today’s episode, Matt Tamanini is in conversation with the Tony-nominated star and producer of “Purpose,” Glenn Davis. On stage, David plays Solomon “Junior” Jasper, a role for which he was nominated for a Tony Award in the Best Featured Actor in a Play category. As he is also the co-artistic director of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, which originally commissioned this work and produced it in Chicago and on Broadway, Davis is also nominated in the Best Play category.
In their conversation, Matt and Glenn discuss the Pulitzer Prize-winning work of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, the excellent direction from Phylicia Rashad, and the record-tying five Tony nominations for the ensemble of actors.
Since the interview was recorded, “Purpose” has extended its Broadway run by two weeks, so you can now see it at the Helen Hayes Theatre through Aug. 31.

GODDESS comes to The Public for its New York premiere featuring music and lyrics by Michael Thurber, book and direction by Associate Artistic Director/Resident Director Saheem Ali, additional book material by James Ijames, and choreography by Darrell Grand Moultrie. A mysterious singer arrives at Moto Moto, a steamy Afro-jazz club in Mombasa, Kenya. She casts an entrancing spell on everyone, including a young man who has returned home from studying in America. Will the big plans for his life—stepping into a political legacy and marrying his fiancée—be upended? Inspired by the myth of Marimba, the Goddess who created beautiful songs from her heartbreak, this new musical is a rousing tale of romance, the supernatural, and the quest towards one’s truest self.

Actor A played a featured role in a Stephen Sondheim Tony-winning hit.
Actor B played the leading role in a Stephen Sondheim flop.
Within a dozen years, though, Actor A was playing the role that Actor B had originated in that flop at a revival in one of the nation’s premier regional Tony-winning theaters.
At the same time, Actor B was on Broadway playing the same role that Actor A had had in that Tony-winning Sondheim show. Who are the performers, what are the shows, and what are the roles?
