    Fun Facts

    - The average person speaks 450 words in a typical 3-minute phone call.

    - Forrest Mars (son of the Mars Company founder) first spotted the British confection Smarties during the Spanish Civil War and noticed the candy shell prevented the chocolate from melting. He teamed up with Bruce Murrie (son of Hershey Chocolate's president) and the company later trademarked the “Melts.

    - The lyrebird can mimic almost any sounds it hears — including chainsaws.Wildlife watchers have recorded the Australian species copying not only other birds but other animals, like koalas, and artificial sounds such as car alarms and camera shutters.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: WOMAN WHO MARRIED KIDNAPPER LEAVES HIM FOR HER EX _ In China a man kidnapped a woman because she owed him money. The woman’s boyfriend called police, who tracked down the woman and her kidnapper and discovered the pair decided to get married. But then the woman left her husband/kidnapper and went back to her boyfriend.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE _ SPOILED MAN DRIVES NEW BMW INTO RIVER _ While most 22-year-olds would be ecstatic to receive a BMW as a present from their father, a guy in India wasn’t satisfied and threw a temper tantrum. He wanted a Jaguar and decided to drive his new BMW into a river.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: EX-CON GETS HIMSELF ARRESTED TO REUNITE WITH JAIL BUDDY _ An ex-convict in Brazil was detained for filing a false police report in an attempt to get sent back to jail and see a friend still in detention. The guy was boozed up when he called in the fake police report. When cops asked him why he did it he replied, “I want to reunite with my friend and enjoy the peace of jail.”

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: TERMITES ATE WOMAN’S STASHED SAVINGS _ A woman in China recovered only a small portion of her savings after termites snacked on the hidden bills. The bugs ate through $1,625, which had been hidden in her closet.

THINGS DENTISTS SAY YOU JUST SHOULDN’T DO:

These are the bad dental habits to avoid for a healthy smile, according to a dentist and professor of dentistry . . .

✗ Don’t fall for DIY dentistry trends: No matter how popular they are on TikTok or wherever, never try those whitening recipes or 3D printing aligners without talking to a professional first. (This also applies to ‘at-home cavity fillers’. Trust me!)

✗ Never play contact sports without a mouth guard: A professionally fitted sports guard can spare you a lot of pain and expense, in case something

goes wrong, causing an injury to your teeth. (Ironically, it’s usually my big mouth that ends up CAUSING me a mouth injury!)

✗ Don’t use your teeth as a tool: We’re all tempted to use our teeth to open packages, or even twist off bottle caps. This can mess with crowns and fillings, as well as your perfect teeth – and can lead to things like root canals and other repair jobs. (Chew on THAT for a minute!)

✗ Never wear a drugstore appliance without your dentist’s approval: Over-the-counter appliances, like night guard or sports guards, can sometimes cause teeth to shift. And to fix them could require an investment in full orthodontics. (Same goes for buying USED — I guess!)

✗ Never have a procedure done abroad without thorough research: The standard of care might be different in other countries. If you plan a trip for ‘medical tourism’, make sure that you know that things are sterilized properly, and done by a reputable organization.

✗ Don’t brush your teeth immediately after eating acidic food: Hold off for 45 minutes, because the acids in certain foods have a temporary softening effect on the enamel layer of our teeth.

✗ Don’t take your teeth for granted: Yes, we’d all like to have straight, white teeth, but remember: even if yours aren’t perfect, they still serve a very important purpose – helping you ingest the nutrition you need to power all your body’s functions.

Researchers at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK say they have determined that taking part in what they call “Creating Arts and Crafting” activities results in increased life satisfaction, a greater sense that life is worthwhile, and higher levels of happiness. And perhaps surprisingly, the positive effects of participating in creative activities were more apparent than the benefits from other well-known positive factors — such as age, gender, health, and employment status. In other words, regardless of your life circumstances, picking up a paintbrush or a pair of knitting needles could give your mood a big boost!

A new survey shows that consumers are taking special care of their cars – so they won’t need to buy a new one anytime soon! The study, by Talker Research found that 73% of car owners have made the decision to better maintain their old vehicles due to rising costs.

    HOLLYWOOD FICTION:

Reddit asked users about things that happen in Film that would not happen in real life. Here are some awesome responses…

☞ “ I drive to see someone and there is always a parking space right in front of the building.”

☞ “I am a person driving a car in a film. I rarely look at the road because it’s more important that I face the person in the passenger seat, and weirdly nobody else thinks that is really (freaking) dangerous.”

☞ “I’m a hacker in a Hollywood blockbuster. I don’t use any particular hacking software or know anything about how it’s actually done. All I need to do is type some random code on my keyboard and I’m in the mainframe.”

☞ “ I’m a teacher in a film and the bell always rings just as I’m summing up the lesson so I just shout that I want your test papers on my desk by Thursday morning.”

☞ “ I am a person having a shower or bath in a film. I never wash my body because I am too busy conveying my emotional state.”

☞ “I am a person in a movie who goes into a bar and orders a ‘beer’ and the bartender immediately serves me one without ever asking what type of beer or brand.”

☞ “. I’m a beautiful heroine staying one step ahead of the zombies. It’s been weeks, and my hair and makeup are all perfect, even if my clothes are torn, showing just enough skin.”

“ I’m a bad guy in a film., and when I put a USB stick in anything I get it the right way round first time, every time.

    BAD START TO THE DAY:

The average person knows they’re in for a tough time by 8:36am. The poll of 2,000 Americans also found that the average person endures 4 bad days per month. Here are the top-5 morning “incidents” that mean a bad day is on the way…

    1. Waking up feeling sick (35%)

    2. Sleeping poorly throughout the night (31%)

    3. Waking up with a headache (29%)

    4. Losing keys (26%)

    5. Forgetting phone at home (25%)

Other common signs of a bad day include running out of toilet paper (22%), forgetting a wallet (22%), and oversleeping (18%).

    VIDEOCLIP TIP:

New research shows that the act of quickly watching snippets of videos before moving on to the next one, a move called “digital switching” – actually increases boredom instead of alleviating it. In a study involving 1,200 volunteers, it was found that people reported being less bored when they watched just one video. They found the viewing experience more satisfying, engaging and meaningful than when they bounced through different content, with the ability to skip, fast-forward and rewind clips.

    STATE FAIR FUN:

It’s State Fair season in the USA! And while they may have originated as a way to buy and sell agricultural products, they’ve since grown to encompass some of the oddest, quirkiest, and most wholesome competitions. Here are a few you’re unlikely to find anywhere else…

    1. The mullet competition: Several state fairs feature this hair-raising event, including in Indiana and Illinois. According to the official USA Mullet Championship, judges consider 4 criteria: length, style, uniqueness…and showmanship?

2.The husband calling competition: In this one, well, the title says it all. Some repeatedly yell their husband’s name, while others adopt a more artistic yodel.

    3. The grocery bagging competition: This is a fav at the South Dakota State Fair. To be eligible, contestants must hold a job where they spend at least 40% of their time bagging groceries. Points are awarded based on speed, technique, weight distribution between bags, style, attitude, and appearance.

    4. Pet Rock Olympics: This Colorado State Fair event is broken into 2 categories: best dressed and farthest roller. And for one family, the competition is a tradition that spans 3 generations.

    5. The skillet toss and anvil throw: The goal of this competition, at the Fryeburg Fair in Maine, is to throw the iron objects as far and straight as possible without going out of bounds. Women toss a cast iron skillet — men throw an anvil.

    NEWS OF THE WEIRD:

➢ A former food service director at a school district in the Chicago area has been sentenced to 9 years in prison after admitting she stole $1.5 million worth of…chicken wings. Vera Liddell was convicted of theft and operating a criminal enterprise. The 68-year-old stole the mounds of meat intended to be take-home meals for students learning remotely during pandemic lockdowns. Court records show that Liddell ordered more than 11,000 cases of chicken wings from the school district’s food provider and picked up the order in a cargo van. The food was never brought to the school or given to students. The business manager for the district found the invoices for the chicken wings to be odd, because it is a food item that wouldn’t be served to students because they contain bones

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: WOMAN CALLS 911 OVER LONELY GOOSE CALL _ A woman in England called 911 to ask police to rescue a goose because it had “lost its friends” and looked hungry. The woman was told the goose’s welfare was not a police matter.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: CRYSTAL BALL OVERHEATS TV, IGNITES SOFA _ In the UK, a woman’s home was severely damaged by a freak fire sparked by the sun shining on a crystal ball on her window sill. The $30 ornament refracted the rays straight into the back of the woman’s TV which overheated and exploded, igniting a nearby sofa.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: BURGLAR STUCK IN BATHROOM VENT RESCUED _ A burglar was stopped when he got stuck climbing through a vent while trying to break into an apartment in China. Firefighters worked about an hour to free the man from the narrow vent leading to a bathroom.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: MAN’S LUNG COLLAPSES FROM TOO MUCH KARAOKE _ In China, a man was hospitalized after too much karaoke. The retiree reportedly sang ten songs in a row, straining to hit the high notes before succumbing to pain in his left side. Noticing he had trouble breathing, the man called it a night. The next day, he checked himself into a hospital and was told he had a collapsed lung.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: DRUNKEN DRIVER WAS 13 YEARS OLD _ It’s not usual for a driver charged with drunken driving to be released into the custody of her mother, nor is it usual for an accused driver to be 13 years old. Police in the UK say an officer making a traffic stop found the intoxicated teen behind the wheel. And a few of her friends were along for the ride. She took her mom’s car without permission.

    DOG’S LIFE:

Dolce & Gabbana has introduced a new fragrance mist – for dogs.‘Fefé’ “blends fresh and delicate notes of Ylang Ylang, Musk, and Sandalwood”, resulting in a “tender and embracing fragrance crafted for a playful beauty routine.” Dog owners can preorder the fragrance mist for just over US$100. If that sounds like a lot, keep in mind that it comes in “a sleek green lacquered glass bottle, adorned with a vibrant red metal cap and a precious 24-carat gold-plated paw”

A poll of 2,000 dog owners found that 39% credit their dog with improving their emotional health, while over 25% report enhancements in their mental and physical health. Dog owners said the secret lies in their uncanny ability to comfort us when we’re down (69%), stand by us through stressful times (60%), and even lend an ear when we need to vent (45%). 81% reported increased activity levels as a result of being a puppy parent, and 49% admitted that their furry friend is often the sole reason they get any exercise at all.

    CLEVER USES FOR AIRTAGS:

By now, everyone knows that AirTags are pretty handy for tracking down your luggage when it is misplaced by the airline, but here are some other practical uses that you may not have thought of.

→ Key & Wallet Tracking: If you’ve ever had to replace these things, you’ll agree that slipping an AirTag in your wallet or attaching one to a key ring could save you’re a world of inconvenience.

→ Pet Tracking: It’s pretty easy to fit one on a pet collar – and you can also buy pet collars that specifically fit AirTags. Not just to help find a missing pet, but it might also be fun to find out where your cat takes off to every day!

→ Bike & Scooter Security: Face it: These things are thief-magnets. Slip on an AirTag for valuable peace of mind.

→ Remote Control Finder: Not just the remote that always goes missing, how about that game controller, headphones, or any other device? Just tape an AirTag to it.

→ Child Safety: Depending on your child’s age, an AirTag might be a good way to keep track of them, by sewing one into a coat or attaching it to a book bag.

→ Senior Safety: If Grandpa refuse to carry a phone, maybe ask if he’d be OK with carrying around an AirTag on a keychain.

→ Workplace Tool & Equipment Tracker: Often, toolboxes go (ahem!) “missing” from job sites. Throw an AirTag in your toolbox or attach one to important equipment.

GOAL: MEET 10,000 PEOPLE, ONE AT A TIME, FOR AN HOUR AT A TIME _ Every day, Rob Lawless introduces himself to a stranger. Some days, he sits down with two new people. Some days he meets with four. The 33-year-old Lawless, a self-described extrovert, is on a mission to make friends — lots of them. In November 2015, Lawless launched Robs10kFriends, an initiative to meet 10,000 different people for an hour each. So far, he’s connected with nearly 6446 strangers, which he tracks on his instagram. A Penn State grad, Lawless landed his first job at Deloitte Consulting, which he then left to take a sales position at a tech company. It was there, after countless cold calls and lots of rejections, that Lawless formed the idea for his project. He wanted to simply meet people and hang out one-on-one, disconnected from technology and with no set agenda in mind.

⇒ The founder of Spanx, Sara Blakely, thinks she has the next essential accessory for the busy modern woman: High-heeled sneakers. Last week, she posted an Instagram message, teasing a “luxury hybrid stiletto” and “hy-heel sneaker.” She added that the launch is slated for tomorrow. But “Inc.” magazine found that the new website (Sneex.com) is already up. It offers high-heeled sneakers made of Napa leather, mesh and suede, and engineered to eliminate pain points that are common with high heel. The sneakers are listed for $395 to $595 per pair.

    FAIR FOOD FARE:

Canada’s largest annual fair, got underway on Friday. And while some people go there for the rides and entertainment, others are just there for the food. Here’s a sampling of this year’s menu:

⇒ Deep Fried Pickle Oreos: Just what it sounds like: 3 Oreo cookies, each sandwiching 2 dill pickle slices, fried in a shaved pickle batter and topped with cinnamon sugar and icing.

⇒ Deep Fried Cheese Curds: Deep fried cheese curds topped with icing, cotton candy, crunchy candy bits and edible glitter. Comes with a “Curd Lover” friendship bracelet. (We’re sure they have copyright clearance on the ‘Taylor’s Version’ business…)

⇒ Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab on a Stick: Chow down on the whole crab – doused in sriracha mayo.

⇒ Deep Fried Butter Chicken Lasagna: A deep-fried slab of 8-layer lasagna with mozzarella, parmesan and ground butter chicken, in a slightly spicy butter chicken and tomato sauce. (That doesn’t sound weird – it sounds delicious!)

⇒ Mac & Cheetos Popsicle: Fried mac and cheese conveniently served on a stick, and livened up with a Cheetos coating.

⇒ Kool-Aid Fried Chicken: Day-Glo red, deep-fried and generously topped, it boldly ventures into unfamiliar territory. (And we bet it’s refreshing!)

⇒ Cheeseburger Spring Rolls: More portable than your typical burger, this hand-rolled snack is stuffed with ground beef, cheese and dill pickles.

⇒ Spammy Tots: Features crispy sushi rice tots splashed with Aloha Shoyu soy sauce and topped with Spam fries, nori flakes, furikake and spicy mayo.

⇒ Wasabi Ice Cream: Wasabi-flavored ice cream topped with crunchy orange sugar pearls and nori, served in a charcoal cone
