The Mischievous Missing Bone with Hannah Parsons Oct 04, 2023
    Show notes

Hello Brave Friends! On this episode we are exploring what pregnancy and early motherhood can look like when there is rare disease and a limb difference involved.

Our storyteller is Hannah Parsons who, herself, was born on the bathroom floor of a trailer. She always knew she wanted to experience pregnancy and whatever adventurous birth came along with that but was not prepared for the bumpy path her pregnancy set her on when an ultrasound revealed her son wasn’t developing typically.

Hannah Parsons is the producer and editor of Brave Together Podcast. She is so proud and thankful to be part of We Are Brave Together and wants to send a big hug out to all the other moms out there, especially the ones who have shared their stories on this podcast, because they make her personally feel less alone.

My Brother is Way More Than a Tragedy of Circumstance with Lori Rivera Sep 13, 2023
    Show notes

Hello Brave Friends! On this episode we’re exploring what being an amazing advocate looks like. As we all know, advocacy can take on a lot of forms, helping with communication, getting all the right medications and in some cases… calling out the professionals who’ve maybe forgotten that their patients are much more than their disabilities.

Our storyteller, this episode, is Lori Rivera, a sister caregiver, whose brother Shawn has severe cerebral palsy. She has been caring for him for over 11 years and has a really powerful story to share about how care-givers can facilitate deeper relationships between doctors and patients.

Lori Rivera is a lover of laughs, naps and sarcasm, a mother of 3, wife of 1 and caregiver to her brother Shawn. One of her motto’s is to buy the earrings and eat the dessert, because life is too hard and short not to.

How to Build an Entourage of Love with Emma Nadler Jun 14, 2023
    Show notes

Hello Brave Friends, you know we encourage sisterhood on this podcast but we don’t always talk about the unexpected community that can form around our children with unique needs, when we’re open to it. And sometimes that means having a broader idea about who that community may include. It might NOT be other mom’s, even care-giving mom’s with kids the same age because hey, they're BUSY! Instead, it might be a retired neighbor looking for some way to be of service, a single friend who has the time to help you take your kid to the park, it might even be a paid care-giver who bonds with your child and builds a lasting relationship with them. So in our last episode of season four, we have a beautiful topic for you, how to build an entourage of love around your child.

For this episode, host Jessica Patay speaks with author, speaker and psychotherapist, Emma Nadler who wrote a beautiful memoir called The Unlikely Village of Eden. Beyond building an entourage of love, they discuss a whole spectrum of things including: the shock of and culture around a child’s diagnosis, the importance of not giving up on community and why we have to FIGHT FOR OURSELVES, asking for help again and again because WE’RE WORTH IT.

The Unlikely Village of Eden is an insightful and wholehearted look at the long-ignored realities so many families live with daily. Nadler is a trusted guide who confronts both hope and despair as she gives readers the gift of what it looks like to redefine love, success, family, and community.

Break Relief Sitters with Nichelle Harvey Jun 07, 2023
    Show notes

Vacationing with your kids doesn’t always feel like a vacation, more like a relocation, am I right?! And when any of your children have special needs, it can feel even harder to relax in a new location, no matter HOW sandy the beaches are. But what if you had a qualified nanny along for the ride?

On this episode, host, Jessica Patay, interviews CEO and founder of Break Relief Sitters and Nannies LLC, Nichelle Harvey. Nichelle is a mother of 2 boys. Her oldest son is Autistic and like most new parents, she struggled to balance her everyday life, working as an ICU nurse, and caring for her son. During a family vacation in the Dominican Republic, while sitting by the pool, she observed other families vacationing but was not really enjoying the full experience of what a vacation should be all about.

Nichelle decided to blend her passion for vacationing, her love for children, inclusive of kids on the spectrum as well as kids with special needs, theme parks and self-care into one big melting pot of goodness. This blossomed into her business.

Their motto is, “take the break you deserve today, we work while you play”.

Flexibility is Key with Amanda Griffith-Atkins May 31, 2023
    Show notes

In extreme parenting, mastering flexibility is key! We never know what is around the corner and our kid’s unique needs keep us permanently on our toes. But we are also the ones providing routine for our kids, especially those who struggle with anxiety. So we have to stay nimble, dancing between providing the necessary structure and going with the flow enough to avoid a mental break!

In today’s story we hear form Amanda Griffith-Atkins who shares about a family vacation she went on with her son, who has Prader-Willi Syndrome. Then host, Jessica Patay interviews Amanda about all things PWS parenting, flexibility and advice for parents expecting too much from their differently abled children.

Amanda is a licensed marriage and family therapist and founder of Amanda Atkins Counseling Group in Chicago. Her specialties include couple’s issues, grief and loss (particularly partner, parent, or child loss), chronic or terminal illness, infertility, and postpartum mood disorders. She enjoys treating issues related to parenting, including the complex demands placed on parents of disabled children. Due to her extensive experience in grief work, she’s partnered with large corporations to provide on-site therapy amid workplace crises and tragedy. She’s also worked with nonprofits and corporations, presenting on mental health issues in the workplace. Before founding AACG in 2015, Amanda worked in community mental health, a group practice, and Hospice. Amanda holds a master’s degree from Northwestern University and is trained in EMDR and EFT. She has advanced training in postpartum issues and is certified in perinatal mental health. She is an in-demand speaker and media contributor, featured in the Chicago Tribune, Crain’s Chicago, Better, Chicago Parent, POPSUGAR and more. Amanda lives with her husband, 3 sons, beloved dog, and 2 mediocre cats. Her oldest son Asher has Prader-Willi Syndrome.
