    Show notes

August is an awful month (in my opinion) but FALL is just around the corner. This time of year has always seemed like the real 'new year' to me - a time to reset, reevaluate, and get back to what matters most. This is an inspiring and encouraging look to the future and all that the coming months have to offer us: sweaters, hot tea, cider, hikes in the woods... And an existential 'new start.'

S4:7 EP49: How Agatha Christie Saved the Latin Mass Aug 02, 2022
    Show notes

Back in 1971 Agatha Christie, along with many other writers, artists, and intellectuals (some Catholic, many not), signed a letter defending the traditional Tridentine Mass ('the Latin Mass') on the basis of its cultural contribution to Art and the Dignity of the Human Spirit. What can this letter and the surrounding conversations teach us today, as we yet again find ourselves in a state of liturgical confusion? We're staying out of the politics and the drama and exploring the BEAUTY of the Mass. We'll learn about the famous 'Agatha Christie indult' and Katie shares the incredible impact the traditional Mass has had on her personally. Lots of incredible music from a recreation of a High Latin Mass in Paris throughout.

S4:6 EP48: The Theology of Harry Potter with Gina Dadaglo Jul 26, 2022
    Show notes

A fun and thought-provoking chat all about the beautiful, theologically rich world of Harry Potter. Is Harry Potter a Christian story? We sure think so! (And so did J.K. Rowling). Katie and her guest Gina Dadaglo dive into Fear (and why it's so common but also so wrong for Christians to act out of fear), Sacrifice, Love, Friendship, Growing Up, being Parents, being converts to Catholicism, and the controversy over whether Christians should even be reading Harry Potter. Sit back and enjoy! ----

    S4:5 EP47: On Self Reliance Jul 19, 2022
    Show notes

Katie recently experienced a nearly week-long power outage and it got her thinking about Self Reliance and Self Sufficiency. What are these virtues, how do we acquire them? What is mental Self Reliance (a la Emerson), physical self reliance (does it require a bunker and a large farm?). She’ll also question the limits of self-sufficiency and how we’re all in a cycle of need… Who do we need, who needs us? And have we put our trust in the right things, people, entities, etc.? Big questions for you this week.

Today on the podcast Katie explores the life of Beatrix Potter, famed author of the "Peter Rabbit" stories. Creator of so many magical worlds, where did Beatrix find inspiration? And what inspiration can we gain from her life? Beatrix didn't publish until her late 30s, didn't find love or a place to truly call home until her 40s. It's never too late! S4:1 EP43: Scarborough Fair: Origin, History, and the Power of Song Jun 21, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to Season 4! We're launching the season with a deep dive into the beautiful traditional ballad Scarborough Faire. Did you know there are many versions of the song that don't even mention a fair at all? Or that for most of its history it seems the song was sung in a major key (not the haunting minor key we're all familiar with!)? And what is the symbolism behind that famous 'herb refrain? Katie discusses all this and more. This is a story of influence and collaboration, of creation and musical ingenuity. Including some beautiful original old recordings in addition to more modern versions, this is a chance to appreciate the history of one of our most beloved songs.
