Thank you sincerely so much to everyone who has listened, written in, and shared this podcast over the years. I'll continue writing on Substack and may even have new podcast projects in the works, so please follow along there to stay in touch: https://bornofwonder.substack.com/
Also, if you email me (marquettekatie@gmail.com) a list of all the references/voices you hear in the Born of Wonder introduction (and don’t google!) I’ll send you a bottle of holy water I collected myself from a well in Ireland. :)
[just the first three people, it’s not magical refilling water, at least I don’t think so…]
Thank you sincerely for listening and sharing this podcast over the years. I hope it has given you wonder and delight and reminded you that it is a beautiful world we live in (truly) -
“we make idols of our concepts but wisdom is born of wonder.”
On this podcast episode Katie and Haley discuss her two new books, focusing in particular on the Catholic Imagination (what exactly is that?), the sacramental reality of the world, and how reading a good story can change your life. We also dive a little bit into some of the more unfortunate online discussions re. women that have been circulating lately and how limiting they are. Instead of boxing ourselves into narrow images of womanhood and motherhood, Haley and Katie discuss the ways we can open our minds and hearts to the many beautiful ways of being a woman in the world.
Highly encourage you to check out Haley’s books (they would make the perfect Christmas present!) and follow along with her work. Thanks again to Haley for coming on the podcast!

www.bornofwonder.com www.mediamarqcreative.com Born of Wonder SubstackAnn Kennedy Smith takes seriously the old saying “behind every great man is a great woman,” bringing to light the complicated, illuminating, fascinating stories of women who made their mark and maybe haven’t gotten their due recognition. She brings us into the beauty, sadness, and joy of women’s lives and brings an important, compelling perspective. She is the writer behind the popular "Cambridge Ladies Dining Society" Substack and an independent scholar currently focusing on the lives of Victorian women (and beyond) at Cambridge.
Ann conducts herself with class, kindness, and genuine curiosity. She teaches us there are seasons of life for everything - for children and snatching moments of reading in between diaper changes, and for burying oneself in a dusty library at a romantic and beautiful university.
On this episode, Katie and Ann were able to discuss some of the specific women she has profiled in her writing (including Katie's personal favorite, Sylvia Plath), how to balance different priorities in different seasons of life, and how to lean into your creative niche.

www.bornofwonder.com www.mediamarqcreative.com Born of Wonder SubstackThe Hillbilly Thomists are a band of friars of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans). After playing music together for several years, they released their debut album (The Hillbilly Thomists)in 2017, which reached #3 on the Billboard bluegrass chart and mostly consisted in bluegrass standards and Americana favorites.
Since then, the friars in the band have been doing what Dominican friars do: contemplating, studying, and preaching. Their most recent album, Marigold, released in July 2024.
Katie was joined on the podcast by band member, Fr. Justin Bolger O.P. Fr. Justin hails from a family of seven and grew up in Maryland. He studied business at the University of Baltimore and earned a Masters in Philosophical Studies from Mt. St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD. He was also a singer/songwriter and recording artist with his sister Margaret. He is now the Associate Chaplain of the University for the Catholic Community at Brown University.
Katie had such a great time talking to Fr. Justin. He is very gracious, funny, introspective, and clearly has a true love for the music he is playing. We hear about some of the background behind some favorite Thomist tunes and what it’s like for the brothers to all play together. We also discuss the many deep, compelling themes to be found in traditional music and how their band offers the culture a serious, but joyful, contemplation both of the Last Things and the True things. Thanks so much to Fr. Justin for coming on.

www.bornofwonder.com www.mediamarqcreative.com Born of Wonder SubstackKatie recently visited The Library of Congress for the first time. Her guide was a dear friend, Joanna Colclough - a reference librarian specializing in newspapers and current periodicals at the Library of Congress. Tune into this podcast to hear some highlights from our tour, how you can become a researcher at the Library, learn what the Library actually does (I had no idea), how do you solve a problem like Maria (you’ll hear what I mean), and most all, celebrate the history and preservation of knowledge and the written word. I think you’ll be wonderfully encouraged!
I want to thank Joanna for her incredible tour and I was so thrilled to see her truly in her element. The Library is lucky to have her!

www.bornofwonder.com www.mediamarqcreative.com Born of Wonder Substack ---- I do want to note that this episode is being released on September 11th, an anniversary I don’t think any of us should forget. And this Library, this episode, this visit, celebrates America at its finest - a flawed and imperfect history, but a history to be proud of nonetheless. And one worthy of preservation and respect. The American Dream includes The Library and Freedom of Speech and a deep love and respect for Knowledge. Let’s make sure to light a candle today in honor of the victims of the September 11th attacks and as a light of hope for our country and its’ ideals.“Analog” technology (things like clocks, dimmer switches, speakers, microphones, walkie-talkies, thermometers, etc.) are directly related to the function which they are performing. They are, in other words, simple. You talk into a microphone - you hear a sound. You look at a clock - it tells the time. You set an alarm - it rings. There’s not too much of a gap between experience and function. Digital technology, however, is incredibly complex. Smartphones, robotics, AI, cyber security systems, computers - all these things do not necessarily have direct relations between their uses and their functions. They are not analogous. Instead they are the result of a billion computations and numbers very few of us understand.
Needless to say, the human brain works in analog. Our brains are wired to understand input-result-repeat. So what happens when we disrupt these natural analog ways of being, infusing our very centered, embodied selves with a confusion of digital data? Well, the results aren’t great. Not for kids, but not for adults either. Spikes in anxiety, lack of knowledge retention, memory issues, focus problems, the list goes on and on. Here to help us make sense of it all is someone I have admired for quite a long time here on Substack.
In this podcast discussion we cover the practicalities of life as an analog family, what drives Katherine’s decisions around screen use and her family, how she’s raising ‘analog’ teens in digital world, and why parents need to get honest with themselves about their own screen use in order for there to be any real change for kids.
Although all this talk of screens and the immense cost it has on our lives and our kids can be heavy, ultimately this is an incredibly positive discussion. When we give up our obsession with our phones, we’re free - to have experiences, to adventure through life as a family. This is about liberation, discovery, and reclaiming our lives.
And special thanks to my daughter, Jojo, for her introduction to this podcast episode.

Come to Ireland with me in October 2024!
www.bornofwonder.com www.mediamarqcreative.com Born of Wonder SubstackWhat is the right thing to do?
This is a question that we're all confronted with at some point. Big decisions, little decisions, all can be incredibly difficult to discern what to do. And making choices that give us flexibility, time, and opportunities for creativity can make all the difference when it comes to happiness and pursuing the dreams we're meant to live out (especially for parents!).
On the podcast today, Katie is joined by life consultant, occasional theology professor, and Substack writer Kerri Christopher to discuss expat life, mothering and creating, and discerning that 'still small voice.' It was a great conversation filled with practical tips and encouragement!

We talk about how it's going, what he loves about it, and the genuine inconveniences he has to put up with (and why it's still worth it). We have a far reaching conversation on smartphones, memory, technology generally, the role of physicality, time, friendship, community, and independent thought.

Living with ”the Timeless in our Hearts”Whether it's a season of the year or a season of life, living joyfully requires us to accept the season we are in - and even to embrace it! Maybe in summer you need to cook 'no heat' recipes, drink sangria, listen to Spanish guitar, and take siestas. Stop fighting it! The same goes for seasons with a sleepless baby (or giving birth!) or a season of self denial or seasons that are more naturally easy for us. Accept + Embrace. An encouraging and fun episode including poetry, great music, and tips for those of us who suffer from reverse SAD (seasonal affective disorder) in muggy summertime.

www.bornofwonder.com www.mediamarqcreative.com Born of Wonder Substack Come to Ireland with me in October 2024! ---Les Miserables is one of those profound stories that somehow encompasses the full depth of human experience. We have birth, death, falling in love, disappointment, justice, despair, young revolutionary zeal, forgiveness, and heavenly hope.
From Valjean’s first encounter with the Bishop - who forgives him, undeservedly so - to Valjean’s own forgiveness of Javert (and Javert’s inability to accept his mercy) - this a story of love offered, received, and sometimes (tragically) rejected. It is a story that promises the often miserable human condition always has the hope of redemption, if not in this life, “somewhere beyond the barricade.”

When you first encounter the liturgical year, it can be completely overwhelming. There is a saint's feast day every day! What season are we in again? Is it Eastertide? Ordinary Time? Who can keep track?
Here to help us make sense of all this - and inspire us to live a rooted, embodied, seasonal, in-tune, life - is Hearthstone Fables. Kristin is a beautiful writer, rooted in story and history, and she beautifully weaves the rhythms of the agrarian year with the rhythms of the Church. She makes connections we may never have thought of (stay tuned for the discussion on the nativities of Christ and St. John the Baptist!) and brings a genuine joy to the liturgical year that makes the discovery of feast days and ancient traditions seem not overwhelming, but exciting, - delightful! A treasure trove to be explored.
On the podcast, Kristin discusses how to feel rooted, both in place and in faith, in a modern age opposed to both. Also discussions on how to find community, make the liturgical year a living reality, and how to celebrate with presence and tradition no matter whether you’re in an urban or agricultural setting.
An inspiring and convicting conversation to ground us in story, celebration, tradition, and art.

Today on the podcast, Katie is joined by Rachel Sherlock to discuss the power of girlhood, joy, dressing up, collective experience, and what the Eras Tour and Taylor Swift as an artist can offer a culture starved for meaning, unity, and good old fashioned fun. Plus - their favorite Swift songs, how they became fans, what era they are, and so many good deep dives for true Swift fans. If you're a Swiftie, this is a real treat, and if you're not, tune in and understand what all the fuss is about! (and get excited for her new album - dropping at the end of this week!)

The Fellowship of Taylor SwiftToday on the podcast Dr. Larry Chapp - former professor and current popular blogger, writer, theologian and founder of the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker Farm - joins us to talk all about Dorothy Day. We discuss her radical politics, her orthodox faith, and what she has to offer a world so at odds with itself. Dorothy Day saw her politics, and her love for the poor, as completely inseparable from her Christian faith - it informed everything she did and everything she stood for. We speak about how to return to a truly 'lived' Christianity, even when it makes us a bit 'weird.' What is the role of money? How much should we even have materially speaking? Is there a deep tension with serving the poor and also being a responsible parent? All this plus a practical discussion on how we can help others and follow Christ's foundational commandment to always care for those in need.

Happy 100 episodes! To celebrate, we're launching off into space - exploring that 'Love which moves the sun and other stars' - guided by Gustav Holst's epic 7 part orchestral suite 'The Planets.' We'll visit each planet and hear its accompanying musical movement while also learning some fascinating facts (how old are you in Mercury years? Did you know the sun rises twice on Venus in a day? etc). This is a chance to wonder and stand in awe of the world (and other worlds), reminding us of the vast mystery we are all a part of. We'll also hear a beautiful Les Miserables-inspired violin medley at the very end (courtesy of Lindsey Stirling - who has an asteroid named for her if you were wondering). Happy stargazing!

We'll learn about the abandoned Irish island of Blasket and get lost in some eerie beautiful Selkie stories. We will also explore the famous and outstandingly beautiful Book of Kells - what was once described as 'the work of angels, not of man.' We'll hear about one of Ireland's patron saints' St. Columbia and how he rebuked the Loch Ness Monster and at the end of the episode we'll enjoy some Yeats poetry readings.

“Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel like I've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. Reading is grist. Reading is bliss.”
― Nora Ephron
The Nordic Theory of Love asserts that unhealthy dependencies inhibit our ability to truly love one another - that true love thrives under circumstances that establish independence and equality. Understanding this theory is key to understanding the economic and social policies in Nordic countries, policies that continuously have them topping out the rankings in the World Happiness Report. Nordic societies put in place social safety nets - including universal access to family leave, childcare, healthcare, and education - in order to free individuals from cycles of dependency and live more authentically. Or at least that is the theory. Does it work?
Finnish journalist and author Anu Partanen is here to explain how all these policies play out in Nordic societies and why she thinks they actually could work, especially at the state level, in the USA. I ask her all the questions I've always wanted to know about Nordic countries - How do businesses keep running if everyone is continuously taking off for maternity leave? What about those infamous wait times when you go the doctor? Is this really just a culture obsessed with conformity?
I hope this conversation gives you a lot to think about and I would love to hear your thoughts!

You'll get some great recipes and cooking tips as well as some broader personal reflections about how to establish a life that reflects our true joys and desires. Rachel Remmes is a recovering academic and passionate at-home chef who lives in New York City with her husband and three young children. Although she has been cooking avidly for as long as she can remember, in October 2023 she launched a substack - Can't Help But Cook. Her goal with this substack is to reignite an appreciation for at-home cooking by learning the fundamentals all while teaching her readers how to correctly salt meat and poach fish along the way. Rachel, who earned a masters in art history, views cooking as a creative art form that adds beauty and meaning to our lives in the same way as a good book or a stunning painting. Readers of her substack can enjoy her two published cookbook reviews. Additionally they can anticipate more cookbooks reviews this year, along with theoretical dinner guest conversations, including one with writer/director, Greta Gerwig, and another with the 20th-centuty Norwegian novelist, Sigrid Undset. Follow Rachel on Substack: Can't Help But Cook Rachel's Recommended Recipes:Here during Valentine's Day Week, we're celebrating one of life's biggest joys: Friendship, a love that is often much devalued in our modern society. While friendship might be unnecessary in the most basic biological sense (we need parents, we need spouses, in ways that we don’t need friends), it is precisely that lack of obligation that has the potential to elevate friendship to an extraordinarily high, even near divine, place in our lives. We're going to celebrate with audio clips giving us a chance to meditate on great friendships like Anne Shirley and Diana Barry, Elphaba and Glinda, C.S. Lewis and the Inklings, Jesus and His disciples. Animals understand that winter is a time for retreat and rest. They know that surviving the harshness of winter means living differently - sometimes even entering a liminal state of being: hibernation. And while human beings don't hibernate per say, there's a lot we can learn from the rhythms of the natural world. Whether it's ignoring 'clock time,' embracing 'denning,' or 'The Watch,' there are many ways to encourage a joyful engagement with our body and mind's need for seasonal rest. As Shakespeare wrote - 'a sad tale's best for winter' - there's something about this time of year that merges the melancholy with the imaginative, the darkness with the light. Instead of hiding from the contradictions, let's embrace them.

Joy, thou shining spark of God,
Daughter of Elysium,
With fiery rapture, goddess,
We approach thy shrine!
Your magic reunites those
Whom stern custom has parted;*
All men will become brothers*
Under your protective wing.
Let the man who has had the fortune
To be a helper to his friend,
And the man who has won a noble woman,
Join in our chorus of jubilation!
Yes, even if he holds but one soul
As his own in all the world!
But let the man who knows nothing of this
Steal away alone and in sorrow.
All the world's creatures draw
Draughts of joy from nature;
Both the just and the unjust
Follow in her gentle footsteps.
She gave us kisses and wine
And a friend loyal unto death;
She gave the joy of life to the lowliest,
And to the angels who dwell with God.
Joyous, as His suns speed
Through the glorious order of Heaven,
Hasten, brothers, on your way
Exultant as a knight victorious.
Be embraced, all ye millions!
With a kiss for all the world!
Brothers, beyond the stars
Surely dwells a loving Father.
Do you kneel before Him, oh millions?
Do you feel the Creator's presence?
Seek Him beyond the stars!
He must dwell beyond the stars.

Medieval Christians talked about Jesus in ways that can shock us today - Jesus as Mother, as Lover. These evocative ways of viewing Christ can open us up to a surprisingly rich and imaginative spirituality. Today on the podcast Katie is joined by Dr. Grace Hamman, author of the excellent new book, "Jesus through Medieval Eyes: Beholding Christ with the Artists, Mystics, and Theologians of the Middle Ages." We'll discuss the unique spirituality of the medieval world - the saints, monastics, and mystics who wrote of Christ in strange and beautiful allegories, and what all of this can teach us today.

Why graveyards can be peaceful and romantic - the importance of 'memento mori' - and three famous 'graveyard poems.' Ending the episode with some fantastic music from some bluegrass loving Friars. Elflore and the stories of 'the hidden folk' are so infused in Icelandic culture, even today, that most Icelanders see elves as simply part of their landscape. If they don't outright believe in them, they at least can't say for sure that they don't exist. And in fact so many people DO believe in elves that advocates have blocked new construction and successfully lobbied parliament on behalf of Elvish interests. What do we make of this? Our modern mind resists this sort of engagement with fairy stories, but what do we lose when we sap all possibility of magic from our environments? Today on the podcast, Katie is joined by author Nancy Marie Brown to discuss the power of storytelling and the limits of knowledge (and the freedom of mystery) as we learn more about the Icelandic elves and the people who believe in them. (Plus some bonus chatting about the incredibly unique Icelandic horse!)

Letter 177 from letters and papers from prison
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
"The same God who is with us is the God who forsakes us (Matthew 15:34!). The same God who makes us to live in the world without the working hypothesis of God is the God before whom we stand continually. Before God, and with God, we live without God. God consents to be pushed out of the world and onto the cross; God is weak and powerless in the world and in precisely this way, and only so, is at our side and helps us. Matt. 8:17 Makes it quite clear the Christ helps us not by the virtue of his omnipotence but rather by virtue of his weakness and suffering! This is the crucial distinction between Christianity and all religions. Human religiosity directs people in need to the power of God in the world, God as deus ex machina. The Bible direct people towards the powerlessness and the suffering of God; only the suffering God can help.
The human being is called upon to share in God’s suffering at the hands of a godless world.... It is not a religious act that makes someone a Christian, but rather sharing God’s suffering in the worldly life."

In short, there is no escape from the dilemma of being a man.” "Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed. Each of us is loved. Each of us is necessary." Pibroch by Ted Hughes https://www.poetrygrrrl.com/pibroch-by-ted-hughes/Maybe you feel a sense of dread anytime you scroll through your social media feeds or turn on the news. Maybe you're stressing about the holidays because you know there are going to be some inevitably uncomfortable discussions surrounding politics, hot button issues, and religion. If any of this sounds familiar, this episode is going to lower your blood pressure and reassure you that while these discussions are undeniably difficult, they don't have to cost you your peace or your relationships.
Julie Walsh served for three years in the Inspector General’s office of the U.S. General Services Administration and for five years as Associate Director, Social Concerns of the Maryland Catholic Conference. For the past twelve years, Julie has been a stay-at-home mother to (now) five young children. She is a podcaster and writer advocating for respectful dialogue over political tribalism. Julie and Katie have a candid discussion about their own changing views over the years, in the areas of faith, politics, friendships, relationships, etc. and how this has complicated their approach to what are often presented as one-dimensional issues.
As we near the end of Advent and celebrate the Incarnation in Christmas, let's remember to always put the dignity of the human person first. An encouraging, thought-provoking episode for you.
Have a very Merry Christmas!

Julie Walsh’s life has always centered around politics and her Catholic faith, and that has made for some strange combinations. Raised Republican, she worked mostly with Democrats when she was a lobbyist for the Catholic Church on poverty, immigration, and health care matters. Today she finds herself politically homeless, but not politically aimless. Julie has found purpose in encouraging people to look beyond labels, to focus more on the moral implications of politics than the partisan horse race.

Like the Riders of Rohan, we're fighting the good fight, we're waiting in the dark, hoping against hope, for a Victory that seems incredibly far off and unlikely. Dietrich Bonhoeffer described Advent as a 'prison cell' and said only those who were poor in spirit, truly in need of help, could know what it is to wait. St. Lucy's Day is next week - a celebration of light in darkness - the Winter Solstice, the darkest, longest night of the year, is just two weeks away. These are Dark Times. This is an episode for hoping against hope, fighting when it seems like all is lost, and knowing that Faith, Goodness, and Love win out in the end.

Flannery O'Connor's prayer to St. Raphael --
Flannery O’Connor - O Raphael, lead us toward those we are waiting for, those who are waiting for us: Raphael, Angel of happy meeting, lead us by the hand toward those we are looking for. May all our movements be guided by your Light and transfigured with your joy.
Angel, guide of Tobias, lay the request we now address to you at the feet of Him on whose unveiled Face you are privileged to gaze. Lonely and tired, crushed by the separations and sorrows of life, we feel the need of calling you and of pleading for the protection of your wings, so that we may not be as strangers in the province of joy, all ignorant of the concerns of our country. Remember the weak, you who are strong, you whose home lies beyond the region of thunder, in a land that is always peaceful, always serene and bright with the resplendent glory of God.

Autumn and the Return of Rhythm
"Rise" by Eddie Vedder
Back in 1971 Agatha Christie, along with many other writers, artists, and intellectuals (some Catholic, many not), signed a letter defending the traditional Tridentine Mass ('the Latin Mass') on the basis of its cultural contribution to Art and the Dignity of the Human Spirit. What can this letter and the surrounding conversations teach us today, as we yet again find ourselves in a state of liturgical confusion? We're staying out of the politics and the drama and exploring the BEAUTY of the Mass. We'll learn about the famous 'Agatha Christie indult' and Katie shares the incredible impact the traditional Mass has had on her personally. Lots of incredible music from a recreation of a High Latin Mass in Paris throughout.

This saga takes us through the tumult and trials of a woman's life in medieval Norway, from childhood until the end of her life. Despite so many falls from grace, this is a redemptive story, highlighting not only the power of the human spirit, but the absolute relentlessness of a loving and merciful God. In this episode, Katie shares how horses taught her a lot about bravery. "Kick on, Jump the Fence!" A meditation on how the Christian life is intimately tied up with suffering and love. Remember no day was as dark as Good Friday, no morning as bright as Easter Sunday. The most often repeated phrase in the Bible is "Do not be afraid." What are we so afraid of? Do we risk loving, losing, hurting? Encouragement to live out the courage of our convictions - to risk our hearts for the things that really matter in life.
Plus - TOLKIEN himself shares his thoughts on the infamous question - "why didn't the golden eagles just fly the hobbits to Mordor?" - Katie gives up social media for good (sort of) - and Love and Mercy from Brian Wilson in honor of Divine Mercy Sunday.

Murder mysteries don’t shirk from the violence of real-life. Sometimes the worst happens. Buta murder-mystery also promises us answers. It promises us a good and thorough investigation that ends with the bad guy getting caught. Can you rectify the initial injustice? Of course not. But it can provide closure, release, and the smallest sense of restoration. Today on the podcast, a deep dive into 'cozy mysteries' - plenty of recommendations - from Agatha Christie to Hitchcock - and a meditative chance to wonder 'why' a good murder mystery can soothe something deep in the human soul.

What did they all have in common? A shared desire for Truth in an age of dogmatic relativism.
