The album that made lots of millennials go buy a sampler, Person Pitch might be the most influential album in the Animal Collective universe. Released 17 years ago, it’s a swampy zoo of sounds that mixed hip hop sampling techniques with 60s pop vocals to make something uniquely 21st century. Christian and Justin talk about the primitive, revolutionary nature of the Panda Bear solo record, its samples, and how it’s maybe not even his best album? The boys also chat a tad about the new Vampire Weekend record, Only God Was Above Us.

Christian and Justin chat with founding Gang Gang Dance member Brian DeGraw (13:04) about the early 00s experimental scene in New York City that included groups like Animal Collective and Black Dice—an alternate history of Meet Me in the Bathroom.
They discuss moving from DC to NYC in '98, being a Manhattan band in a Brooklyn scene, feeling unattached to solo work, piano playing as meditation, and writing music for film. This episode includes snippets of unreleased solo music from DeGraw.
Other topics include record-breaking drum circles, cruise ship concerts during a solar eclipse, and how a freak tragedy years ago birthed a well of creativity for Brian and his friends.
Prior to the interview, the boys discuss Shabaka's new single featuring Floating Points and Laraaji, which Animal Collective record would work as a Broadway stage adaptation, what the AC boys are up to at the moment, and more.

Episode 22: Strawberry Jam Deep Dive
The boys go long on maybe the best AC album of all time: Strawberry Jam, the explosive 7th album from Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deakin and Geologist. Christian and Justin also discuss 2007 as a crossroads for indie rock, steel drums, samples, some casual Beatles comparisons, salvia, and Green Day?
