    #96: Play-Based Family Portrait Sessions - Jenna Cole Feb 19, 2018
    Show notes

Do your family portrait sessions tend to feel stiff and over-posed?

In episode 96 of the Bokeh Podcast, Jenna Anderson of Jenna Cole Photography describes her take on play-based family portrait sessions. Listen in as she shares the steps she takes to not only create a fun environment for the kids, but capture memories that will last a lifetime for the family.

The Bokeh podcast is brought to you by Photographer’s Edit: Custom Editing for the Wedding and Portrait Photographer. You can also subscribe to the Bokeh podcast on the Apple podcast app, follow on Spotify, add to your playlist on Stitcher, or listen on Overcast.

Jenna’s Aha Moment: She can enjoy being a photographer without the fame, the following, or being booked up all the time. Enjoy the process you’re in and how you’re growing from it.

Technique for Free Time: Slowing down her business goals and setting up structure has allowed for her to find focus on the tasks at hand without distraction. This also allowed her to set up boundaries around life and work.

The Gear Bag: Her Canon AE-1 that her mom learned film photography on.

Play-Based Family Portrait Sessions: These sessions are set up to capture how a family would normally engage with one another, without every client’s session coming out the exact same.

Steps to Creating Play-Based Family Sessions:

    1. Once booked, reach out to the family for names, ages, and a photo of the family so you can think about the family and how you can use their features to interact with each other.

    2. Capture the “Grandma Photo,” the photo grandma wants of everyone looking and smiling.

    3. Play games with the kids that will get the fun started:

    a. Shark Attack: where the child secretly gets to be a shark and go attack by kissing the ears of the unsuspecting parents.

    b. The Sushi Roll: everyone is facing the same direction and standing in a row, when one person rolls in, pulling the rest of the family into a “sushi roll.”

    4. Sometime you’ll just need to play games with the kids before the session to make them feel comfortable.

Heather’s Aha Moment: While at a conference, Heather heard someone tell her that she can’t do it all. She needed to delegate what didn’t require her in the business to someone else.

Technique for Free Time: Being intentional is key for having free time from work.

Heather’s Work: She doesn’t want to stick to one genre or niche of photography, because she feels challenged with photographing something different or new on occasion.

The Gear Bag: 70-200mm lens or Arca-Swiss Cube Head

Creating Timeless Images: Keeping classic edits that don’t take on trends or fads will help keep images timeless for your client’s families to enjoy long after their gone.

    Heather’s Post-Production Process:

    1. Load photos into computer.

    2. Send to Photographer’s Edit to cull and edit.

    3. Provide gallery and album guide to clients, either in person or online.

    4. Clients will favorite the images they want added to their album, then Heather creates a spread in Pic Arts of those images for proofing.

    5. After final proofing, Heather uploads to Red Tree Albums, and ships directly to the client.

#93: Better Personal Relationships for Entrepreneurs - Monique Melton Feb 11, 2018
    Show notes

Do you struggle to build personal relationships while focusing so much of your time and energy on your business?

In episode 93, relationship expert and business coach, Monique Melton, discusses the importance of genuine connections inside and outside of your brand. Listen in as she shares the four behaviors you may be presenting that are hurting your personal relationships.

Monique’s Aha Moment: Make sure your identity is grounded in something outside of your business. Who are you without the business or relationships in your life? Continuing to pursue you is so important, not only for life, but for those relationships or businesses to grow.

Technique for Free Time: Intentionally scheduling time for her family on the calendar is extremely helpful of creating the harmony she needs in her life.

Creating the Monique Melton Brand: After Monique did some soul searching to find her calling, she felt the desire to support business owners in building profitable businesses while maintaining healthy relationships.

    Sweet Brands:

S - Story - What is the brand story between you and your clients?

W - Wealth - How are you growing your business?

E - Experience - What are the stages of your client experience?

E - Exceptional Marketing - How are you reaching your clients?

T - Team - How are we going to develop and nurture your team?

You can buy almost anything, but you cannot buy relationships.

Four Behaviors that are Hurting Your Personal Relationships

    1. Relying on social media as a replacement for relationships when it should only be used as an enhancement.

    2. Not having an identity outside of your brand. Making time for little things you enjoy outside of your business is so important for creating your own identity.

    3. Looking at others in your industry as competition will either cause you to be too prideful or too insecure in your work. Your best work will come from you comparing yourself to your potential.

    4. Not learning from others outside of the industry you’re in is causing you to lose potential growth in your business. If you’re only looking at what other photographers are doing, you’re not going to grow beyond those you’re looking at.
