117: Mempho in the Rear View Oct 08, 2021

Despite the best efforts of the rain to keep the party from happening, Mempho Festival 2021 was a grand time! Panic played two really great one set shows on Friday and Saturday, kicking off each show with a high energy opener, building even higher during the set, and sending us all home with big smiles. Billy Strings joined the boys for a killer four song sit in on Friday night, including a massive “Dirty Business,” while the Saturday highlight was probably the raucous “Arleen.” We go over both shows in detail and are joined by a special guest, Jeff’s better half, Jennifer, who attended her first, but hopefully not her last Panic show on Saturday night. She notices details that the rest of us miss, and gives us a breakdown of how one lucky couple experienced the physical act of love inside the porta pots. No, I am not making that up. We end with the obligatory tribute to Fall 1996 and, I kid you not, open up a pack of 1988 Topps baseball cards. In the non-profit world, we would call that “mission drift.”

We’d love to share some clips from Mempho, but there was no taping allowed, so we’ll give you some 96 and 99 fall tour heat instead - enjoy!

The 2021 Mempho Festival is FINALLY here! What a couple of months since the last Panic shows - the Wilmington shows were epic, the Asheville shows serviceable, and then Napa and NYC got canceled, and JB got COVID. But, everyone is healthy and the fans are ready for the Memphis heat! Aside from the Panic, the festival lineup is pretty great, with the Avetts, Nathaniel Rateliff, Black Pumas, Liz Brasher, City Champs, and more gracing the stages at the Memphis Botanic Gardens. We are so excited to have you come to town! Check out this episode for a Mempho preview, some setlist wishcasting, and Jeff’s very extensive dining, drinking, doing, and watching recommendations to keep you and yours occupied during a busy SEC Saturday. JFC, can y’all believe - Sit n Ski was 25 YEARS AGO!

A truly monumental event in the history of the band, it was really a pivot point for what the band would become in 1996 and the remainder of the Houser years. The tour started off with a unique format of solo performances by JB and Houser, new songs and covers, along with a heavy dose of David Blackmon on fiddle, but eventually settled into a groove of stomping, hard-driving Panic with the chairs and acoustics cast aside more often than not.

While we have talked about the tour a bunch, and played several selections over the years (episodes 42 and 43 from 2018), we will take you through the tour on a show-by-show basis, offering up our respective top five tour moments (only one overlap) and delving into such important issues as insurrection, inauguration, Justin Timberlake, and Raisin’ Cane’s chicken strips.

We’ve Been a Long Time Gone

My lands, we were gone a long time, weren’t we?

Great to see you all again, everyone. Harvey and Jeff play a little catchup on life, Panic, politics, and such, and then sit down with Scott Whiddon, a Professor of Writing at Transylvania University in Lexington, who also happens to be a damn fine musician. On December 27, Scott will release his new single, “The Ballad of Chris Bell,” about the Big Star founder and Memphis-born singer-songwriter who died way too young in 1978. The guys talk about Scott’s new record and talk a lot about Panic, using Scott’s first show, 12/30/95 in Spartanburg, SC as the jumping off point. While NYE 1995 deservedly gets a ton of praise, the night before is damn fine as well, featuring a lengthy sit-in by John Keane, and some darkness before the New Year’s joy of the next night in Macon, GA.

We promise to see more of you in 2021, but until then, Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!

It is impossible to believe, but it has been 25 years since we lost Jerry Garcia on August 9, 1995. His life and music paved the way for bands like Panic; his passing may have meant even more, elevating them to bigger tours, bigger venues, and more notoriety as Deadheads looked and longed for a new home. In this episode, we reflect on Garcia’s legacy, what he meant in our own lives, including “where we were” when we found out Jerry had died, and certainly what he meant to Panic. We close out the show with a couple of choice clips featuring two of his longtime collaborators, fellow Grateful Dead founder Bob Weir and bluegrass fiddle legend Vassar Clements. In between, we talk about the ongoing “natty” between 4/3/96 and 10/28/00, Panic’s upcoming “Never Miss a Sunday Show” webcasts, and a few other things as well. As the yahrzeits of both Jerry and Mikey, August 9 and 10 are bittersweet days in the jamband world, but they also give us a chance to reflect and say a quiet note of gratitude. Thanks guys - the world is a better place for having you here.

My God, have we FINALLY reached The Natty?By God, we have! It is set. A consensus #1, all time show in 4/3/96 Huntsville, AL vs. the “People’s Champ,” 10/28/00 New Orleans, LA. A sensational standalone show on a sleepy Wednesday night in “The Rocket City” vs. a get-down Saturday night on Halloween weekend in “The Crescent City.” This matchup is really like choosing between your two kids (Harvey and I both have two boys - some days it is easier to choose one you like, though) and will force you, the voting public, to make a tough decision. Other than that, it’s another Bluest Tape, talking domestic bliss, college sports, old TV, and Harvey again berates Jeff for not yet watching “Hamilton.” Oh, and we threw in a killer clip from Summer 99 - I say “HAT-FIELD!”

Well, it took us almost three years, but we finally have made it to our 100th episode! Congrats to us and congrats to you all for sticking with us through all the talk about appliance repair, existential dread, whining about Kentucky basketball, Memphis-related conspiracy theories, and, perhaps most important, the pod’s evolution in how we think about Panic 3.0.

So, episode 100 is a really big show. Not only did we do a live Facebook stream of our video chat, we drop some uncirculated Panic, an analog pull from deep inside the vault, aka “The Closet in Jeff’s Childhood Bedroom.” We also play two really incredible selections from May 23, 1995 in Santa Ana, CA, towards the end of a massive spring tour. The band is in tip-top shape here, and really pushes the limits with a killer first set “Astronomy Domine” (not making it up) and an intense “Chilly > Mr Soul > Chilly” closer. You’re gonna dig it.

Then we announce the bracket for our “Sweet 16 for COVID-19” challenge, an online poll to choose the best Panic show(s) ever. The bracket features 11 band-selected archival releases plus 5 at-large shows. We hope y’all we get involved and help us with this once we get started next week.

Lastly, and perhaps biggest of all, Harvey just did an awesome interview with GUITAR TEACHER REACTS from YouTube. Michael Palmisano has really embraced the live music community of late, breaking down clips of Trey, Jerry, Jimmy, Derek, and now Mikey. Since we aren’t guitar players, we really have no idea what he’s talking about, but it did us well to hear him lavish some praise on Mikey and talk about how technical of a player he really was. Enjoy the interview!

Looks like we’re gonna be in this together for a while. So, wash your hands, stay home, hug your family, walk your dog (or cat if you can somehow manage that), support a local restaurant by ordering take out, order some records from your favorite indie shop (and because Amazon isn’t restocking vinyl right now), and just be safe out there, okay? We Fancied Rat Patrol: Beacon Residency 2020

Episode #99 hits at a particularly harrowing time in the recent history of our nation. The NBA is on hiatus. March Madness will be played in arenas in front of moms, dads, ballboys, and janitors, and no one else. Tom Hanks - FREAKING TOM HANKS - has the damn virus. End times? Nope. Just 2020, the best year ever.

Well, despite the darkness, at least we still have some Widespread Panic to talk about. The band just completed its first five-nights-in-a-row RESIDENCY in many, many years - five nights, no repeats, and a return back to the 9 song first set, 9-10 song second, and 2 song encore format that served this band so well for so long. We discuss all five shows, but focus on the first and fifth nights. Harvey takes a deep dive in the 2nd set of night one for an old school combo kicking off with “Blight,” while Jeff waxes poetic about the 2nd set in night five, including a killer “Hatfield” with an all time JB rap about Hatfield’s mama and random TV shows and movies from the mid 1960s.

Best of all, dear listener, limited dryer talk and no existential dread. Maybe that’ll be back for episode #100? Let’s hope not.

We recorded this episode in the midst of a driving Memphis rain storm and a 25+ degree temperature drop on Veteran’s Day, so tipping our cap to the great W. Axl Rose and Stephanie Seymour seemed appropo. We dropped a new format for our Halloween 2019 recap and promptly cast it aside for a return to the old format. Sorry!

This week, we have two great examples from Fall Tour 2000 - a couple of unheralded shows from the State of Montana. 11/10/00 finds at Montana State University in Bozeman for a killer trio of mid-first set songs. The next night (11/11/00), we head over to the University of Montana in Missoula for a smokin’, cover-laden encore that has a little bit of everything: killer sound, Schools’ bombs, engaged JB, and so much more. Absolutely love this segment! What a great three night run in New Orleans! Wow!

Excellent performances on all three nights, some BIG surprises, great covers, and killer setlists all around. Obviously, the talk of the run was the tribute to Andy Kaufman on Halloween night that ended in a bizarre piece of performance art to the tune of "Volare" and “Tacos are Cheap.” I hope they book Tony Clifton as an opener for Panic en la Playa in 2021.

Panic Returns to the Cream City!

This weekend, the boys hit the Riverside Theatre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for what will likely be another excellent run of three shows. The band has made the Riverside its exclusive Milwaukee home since 2006, but before that, they played all over “The United States of Milwaukee,” from Shank Hall and the Modjeska to the Eagles Ballroom and Summerfest. We get things started with the band’s first trip to the Cream City in 1992, follow it up with their first set at Summerfest in 1995, and close it out with the epic 1996 show from the Modjeska, and a damn fine Fall 1998 show from the Eagles Ballroom. In between the music, Jeff tries to remember his Milwaukee geography and recall some of his favorite haunts from when he worked in the city in 2012-13. His memory is not as sharp as it used to be though, so he probably made some mistakes. He also forgot to recommend his actual favorite places: Sobelman’s (burgers!), Soup Brothers (red pepper bisque with the sour cream rice ball!), Palomino (tator tots!), Three Brothers (spinach borek!), and Blackbird (beers, cocktails, and board games!). Or just find a fish fry with potato pancakes as a starch option and you can’t go wrong!

Tech Note: We had some serious connectivity issues, so we apologize if it doesn’t sound the best or if it sounds choppy. We also planned on doing a part two and we were gonna play some freaking George McConnell, but Jeff’s wife got sick and his baby is a tool sometimes (but is still sooooo cute), so recording has been difficult to do. We will honor good ole George soon, we promise!

If you are a regular listener to the Pod, you’d swear that we have turned this in a Billy Strings podcast! Lots of Billy Strings talk again this week - we unveil his previously unknown, completely secret REAL last name (dramatic enough for you?) - as Harvey waxes poetic about Billy’s role in the three night acoustic run at the “Mother Church of Country Music,” the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. These acoustic shows mark a giant leap forward for the band from the days of Sit n Ski (amazing, but not really acoustic other than the first 3 nights) and the Wood Tour (too processed, too planned out for us). They are incredibly well played; tight, yet loose; transcendent jams, concise country-soul brilliance; you can tell this band is having fun and really pushing all the right buttons.

This week, Harvey shares his experience at the 2nd night of the Ryman and attending the two Sam Holt Band post-shows (more quality Sam Holt!), plus the usual beer talk, pop culture talk, dad talk, and more. Three great acousti-Panic selections - it is a great show everyone!

By the Time We Got to Woodstock

This week, we take a trip back to the 1969 Aquarian Exposition, aka, the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair, held in Bethel, NY. Through three days of rain, mud, bad trips, no food, traffic jams, and more mud, nearly a half million young people from all over the US made their way to this legendary festival. One such person was Jeff’s father-in-law, Larry, who hitched his way from New York City on Saturday morning, arriving just in time for the day’s music. In this episode, we learn all about Larry’s experience and memory of this incredible event in a special ‘setbreak’ interview. Since this is a Widespread Panic podcast, though, we chose Panic’s versions of nine songs that were performed at the festival. From Joe Cocker and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band to Creedence and The Band, we got it all. Enjoy!

Jeff is still in the fog of newborn parenthood, so we'll give him a pass for not finding time to join us on the podcast this week, but we are lucky enough to call in an ace reliever in the form of Ted Rockwell. Ted attended the most recent Panic three night run at Red Rocks, and as we learn, has attended all of the 60 consecutive WSP sell outs at Red Rocks, dating back to that fantastic show on May 31, 1996 (of course it was fantastic, it was 1996).

But these 2019 shows are pretty darn stellar in their own right. Some great bustouts, but as is common at Red Rocks, the setlist doesn't tell the whole story. Some inspired playing and some magical meteorological moments made for yet another memorable Red Rocks run. One that was full of unexpected, graceful, and not forced musical moments.

Well, we stay true to our element with some more 1996 heat, this time to celebrate the arrival of the Kollath progeny. “Little Wrangler” Ellison Liron Kollath arrived on Tuesday, June 4, weighing a robust 8lb, 7oz. Mom and baby are doing well and dad is trying to figure out how to go hide at work and not offend anyone. In his short time on Earth, Baby Ellison has shown a keen interest in “Take Off Jam” - no, I’m not making that up - it is amazing what you find out at 230am with a 5 day old. Anyway, the music - we decided to celebrate with some “baby” songs - when you hear ‘em, you’ll know what we mean. Some excellent playing here again, getting started with another gem from spring/summer 1996 from The Backyard in Bee Cave, TX, and closing it out with some first set heat from October 1996 in Gainesville, GA. Heat!

Getting Back to Our Roots: A Return to 1996

Since it had been SO long since we dropped a new episode on you all, we thought it best to go back to our roots and play some serious, super sleeper, spring/summer 1996 heat. We head all the way out west to Tacoma, Washington where we find Panic inhabiting the Temple Theater for a smoking two setter that is oftentimes overlooked because of what comes before (5/31 through 6/2) and after (6/5). 6/4 is a special day for the Bluest Tape since, unless nature intervenes, will be the birthday for the newest Kollath child - updates on that to come in the next episode. Anyway, we celebrate all of our good news with the back half of the first set, starting with a killer “It Ain’t No Use” and closing out with a great “(Slow) Porch Song > Mr. Soul.” The middle of the second set here, though, is the fire, especially the first “Do What You Like” since 1991. What a show!

Spring 2019

Sometimes we have the best of intentions.
Sometimes we record two episodes at once.
Sometimes we plan on putting out episodes in back to back weeks.
Sometimes life intervenes.
Sometimes Jeff forgets to write the liner notes.
Sometimes we feel bad about all of this.

Here it is, a review of the early and middle part of the Spring 2019 Panic tour. We recorded the show just before the Sweetwater 420 and Trondossa Festivals so we don’t have anything from those four shows, but there is a pretty good smattering of tracks from DC, Port Chester, and Durham. As many of you may know, the band is really playing well right now, so enjoy this episode and don’t hate us for the tardiness. It isn’t personal. We swear.

It Was Twenty Years Ago Today...

Early Spring 1999

All these 20/25/30 year anniversaries are making us feel OLD, ya’ll! It is hard to believe that Panic has been around that long, and even more remarkable that the band is still together and killing it (yes, even we now admit the band is on fire, just needed to ‘recalibrate’ our thinking - we’re late to the party, sue us!). We go back 20 years to the spring of 1999, probably the best tour of the year and one of the last great tours before Mikey departed in summer 2002. We start off with show #1, a smoker from Hampden-Sydney College in VA, followed by a rare “Rock” sandwich from Ann Arbor on April 14, and close it out with one of Jeff’s all time favorites, April 17 in Huntsville, AL. Along the way, we talk about our usual array of things, including politics, memories from the road, TV, and Panic counterfactuals. Enjoy!

We close our the closers series with the top five picks in our draft. It was a tough choice at the top of the draft, a true Ryan Leaf v. Peyton Manning kind of decision, but in this case, I suppose there were really no losers and no one ended up in jail for drugs and theft. If that’s the case, then I guess it was nothing like Leaf v. Manning.

Anyway, I digress. So, Widespread Panic. Closers. Jeff had the 1st, 4th and 5th picks, and went with “Conrad,” “Proving Ground,” and “Cream Puff War,” while Harvey used his 2nd and 3rd picks on “Chilly Water” and “Love Tractor.” Along the way, we discuss some of our favorite tropes like Midwest shows, random mid-90s tribute albums and compilations, hyperbolic thoughts on 1996, Danny the Sound Guy, split “Proving” vs. un-split “Proving,” and shows we discover during show prep. It certainly took us a while to get back to this theme of traditional openers → traditional closers (are we doing encores, Harvey?) but here we are with volume one of the closers portion of the proceedings. Some excellent selections here (Harvey with three, Jeff with two) that may spark a little debate amongst the Panic fans out there. We get started with a selection from the Travelin’ Light Tour of summer 1998, and then go back a year to summer 1997 for a couple of hot mid-July shows with Warren Haynes guesting on slide. Harvey’s picks close us out with yet another return to NOLAWeen, this time the second night of 1999, and then onto a Kalamazoo, Michigan show from November 1997 that has to be one of the all time sleeper shows. Excellent playing. Nice sounding tapes. Not a ton of dad talk. What more could you ask for?

That Other January Tour

Here we are in the midst of another Sit n Ski anniversary, but this time around, we’ll take a pass on the landmark 1996 tour and jump back three years further in the past and look at 1993. Taking two weeks off after an epic NYE at the Georgia Theater, Panic hit the road for a remarkable 41 shows in a little over 50 days, starting in Florida and ending up in New Orleans in early March. The shows for this episode come from late January and find the band in prime form - crisp transitions, extended jams and solos, a massive tease or two, and transcendent setlists. The crowds are in prime form as well, which you can hear loud and clear on these excellent audience tapes - nary an SBD in the bunch, which is a GOOD thing, people!

Ending of One, Beginning of Another: NYE Run at the Fabulous Fox

The New Year’s 2018 run at the Fabulous Fox Theater is in the books. While many of you are probably already looking towards Panic en la Playa in a week-plus, we decided to take a look back at what was a pretty solid three show run. We saw the return of some old favorites, some supreme setlist creativity, and, no surprise here, some damn fine picking from the boys. It wasn’t a flawless run by any stretch, though strong overall. We were both especially impressed by the selections from the 29th and 30th, so much in fact that Harvey actually says nice things about “Bear’s Gone Fishing.” Thanks for tuning in again this week and we promise to try and keep “dad talk” to a minimum in the coming episodes.

Assuming y’all survived Christmas and such, it is now time to look ahead to Panic’s return to the FABULOUS Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA. The band is saddled up and ready to ride for three nights at the legendary old movie house, and the Bluest Tape has your pre-show soundtrack all mapped out. Harvey and Jeff clearly missed each other since they again talk way too long about various topics, but eventually they get to the music, expertly curated by Harvey this week, who again brings hyperbole and boldness to the table. This week, we present two shows from the band’s first run at the Fox in 1996, followed by a guest laden segment from 1997, and close it out with highlights from nights two and four in 1998. Guests include Kevn Kinney, Jeff Mosier, David Blackmon, and Derek Trucks, among others. Oh, somewhere buried in the middle of all this, Jeff drops that he and his wife are expecting #2. WHAT?!?!

Let’s bring good ol’ 2018 to a close in style with a selection of bonus tracks, which in our case means “shows we really dug and never found the chance to play ‘em this year, or they were in an episode that got cut for one reason or another.”

In the case of these four selections, we think the wait was WELL worth it. After Harvey and Jeff get caught up with their lives and holiday plans, they charge headlong into a ripping performance from Tipitina’s in 1996, followed by some more Paris 98 heat, including a really cool and unique “Space Wrangler” intro and outro. Jeff follows up with bonus tracks from an aborted “Travelin’ Light Tour” episode that - no surprise here - highlights MORE sandwiches from that great tour. If the band could bear the July heat in Mississippi, so can you; if the band can put up with ANOTHER Carrot Top sit in, so can you. Let’s close out the openers show in style, with five burners from days gone by. Harvey kicks things off with his second and third picks, “Send Your Mind” from the great Van Morrison, and a return to the well (so to speak) with a nice “Little Kin” opener from the essential March 1996 show in Johnson City, TN. Jeff comes back with the first of his final two selections: a stellar “Pleas” delivered in front of a rowdy, whiskey-bottle tossing crowd on fraternity/sorority row in Starkville, MS. Jeff then engages in some (probably incorrect) hyperbole by claiming 8/6/00 is the best show from summer 2000 just because he really like the “Holden Oversoul” opener and that “Quarter Tank” from the second set, but whatever, its just like, his opinion, man. Harvey brings some sanity back to the pod with - ADDITIONAL HYPERBOLE ALERT - maybe the best single song in the history of the Bluest Tape. Yep, it’s that kind of episode, folks, so sit back and enjoy!

We've been away for a few weeks (we wanted to give everyone a chance to get caught up on back episodes and listen to all the recent shows the band has been playing). Harvey and Jeff do a quick update and discuss some first thoughts (and hot takes) on the band's Halloween run in Vegas.

Then Harvey is joined by good friend of the pod, Ted Rockwell, to discuss one of the classic runs of the band's history, the 14 shows in 14 days in 13 cities through the West in October/November 1993. Ted gives some great insight, as always, on this run and we include some pretty fantastic playing. As always, Ted and Harvey go really long, so we split this into two parts. Expect part two soon!

Classic Openers, Part 1

This week, we bring you the first of six episodes focusing on classic Panic openers, closers, and encores. Harvey has come up with a complicated mathematical formula that guided us through the fantasy football-like snake draft allowing us to determine what we think are ten of the best classic or traditional (but not THE BEST) Panic openers of all time. Jeff kicks it off with another trip to NOLA for a great segment from Halloween 99 (including “Todd Speaks!), while Harvey takes his shot with Van Morrison and Vic Chesnutt covers. Jeff closes out the episode with “A of D,” a frequent instrumental opener and another selection from Fall 1999. During the episode, we talk about setlist placement (tired of that yet?), if Harvey would ever hit the bathroom during an opener, and we give Harvey the chance to tell everyone why he doesn’t like “Surprise Valley” or “Travelin’ Light.” Fun times!

Yep, that’s right, we finally dive into the wonder that is the “flip the bird” encore, a term coined by Harvey that identifies a single song encore that tends to be a bit lacking either in performance, duration, or song selection. This week’s picks reflect include some excellent examples of post-drums from 1996, 1998, and 2000, followed up by even better examples of a band either up against a curfew or one that’s so worn out, they just want to get back on the bus and watch some “The Andy Griffith Show” reruns. So, here we are, 71 episodes in and, finally, Harvey and Jeff have seen Panic 3.1. We have complained, we have criticized, we have rationalized, and we have waxed poetic about the distant past, but in this episode, we finally come clean: we cool with Panic 3.1. The last three night run in Nashville was a good one and Harvey has a full recap from the second night and from the Sam Holt Band show on Friday night, too. 2018 College Football Preview

Last year, we did the expected, giving you a top four for the College Football Playoff, and added to it with special guest Mark Schlabach. This year, with the help of the Phil Steele (we discuss if he is, in fact, a real person) college football preview magazine and Wikipedia, we highlight four (highly irrelevant) bowl games and choose four great shows to make up for the (irrelevance). We start off in 2001 with a sleeper 1st set pick from May 2001, a sly “Driving Song” sandwich from beautiful Boise, head back to May 2001 with an epic Jazz Fest night show throwdown, and close it out with a couple of rarities from Albuquerque, NM in 1992. And yes, Jeff gives his final four picks since Harvey is apparently looking forward to a college basketball season that will see his beloved Cats lose in the first weekend to Bethune-Cookman. Jeff (who does not like the Cats) likes Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, and Wisconsin (such a homer!).

Many thanks to our very special guest this week, SAM HOLT. That’s right, the guy that has lived the dream of so many Panic fans - fan, taper, guitar tech, MEMBER OF THE BAND. Sam jumped on the bus back in 1989 and has never left it. He is to thank for a pile of tapes of the early days of Panic - some stories of which he shares with us - and heavily documented the classic years of 1995-96. Sam joined up with the band as a guitar tech in summer 2000 and stayed on after Mikey’s passing, eventually becoming lead guitar for two weeks in August 2006. Sam lets us in on a bit of behind the scenes baseball, talks about setlist creation, and talks extensively about the band’s archival release of 9/28/95 from Knoxville, TN which Sam personally selected. This is one great episode - hope you all enjoy it!

Celebrating a silver anniversary

We’re taking a break from our regular programming this week. But this week’s lagniappe is a little different. Harvey goes solo this week and celebrates the 25th anniversary of his very first show, back when he was just a young buck. A 1993 HORDE show from the Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans, Louisiana.

This show is not in circulation digitally, so he dusted off his 3rd generation cassette, captured it, did a little hiss removal, and here it is in its entirety in all of its imperfect glory. The filler on the old cassette was Allgood’s set from that HORDE show, so we’ve included their set closer as the outro music this week.

We’ll be back next week with a great show with a very special guest.

A Very Special Episode of The Bluest Tape

This week, we recap the weekend that was at Mud Island in Memphis, TN. Jeff and Harvey had both planned on attending the shows and giving you the hard-hitting, accurate analysis that you all have grown to love over the past year, but alas, it was not to be. Jeff, however, did go to the show on Friday night, and, SURPRISE, he LIKED it. That’s right, faithful listeners, Jeff actually LIKED the show. Hell, he’s not even gonna complain about ‘Steven’s Cat!’

It was a stellar weekend of performances and setlists - the band really is bringing it with this new concept of doing weekend runs and experiences as opposed to longer tours. We’ll dive deep into the whole scene at Friday’s show, including some pointed commentary on ‘lot shirts,’ talk about the Saturday show (check out the 2nd set and encore!), and leave you with a reminder that while Panic 3.0 is potentially growing on us, we are still - and will always be - Panic 1.0 partisans. Well, after the success of our “Random Openers” show we decided to run it back (sort of) with “Random Closers.” We debate the differences between 1st set closers, 2nd closers, and encores, recall some of our favorite closers from days of yore, and share the (somewhat) famous story of the Deer Creek 2001 show where a pre-show storm turned the sky a purplish-green color. For all you amateur meteorologists out there, that ain’t good. Music-wise, we start off in April 1995 with a tipsy JB bringing the good on “And It Stoned Me” and “Holden,” jump forward to a killer “Stop-Go” closer from July 1997 (pay attention to the jam at the end), and then two selections from 2001. Hope you enjoy and take a drink if you had Goran Ivanisevic in the pool for “first male tennis player mentioned on the Bluest Tape.”

They released their final studio album with Michael Houser, Don’t Tell the Band, and embarked on a mighty fine summer tour starting way out west in California. This week, we talk about the first handful of shows from this tour, with stops in San Diego, LA, and a return to Paolo Soleri in Santa Fe. Tune in for the music - including a great version of “Coconut,” a killer guest spot from War keyboardist Lonnie Jordan, and “Don’t Be Denied” (nuff said) - and stay for Jeff’s stories about living in Cox’s Creek, Kentucky with some random forestry students. We have all had that moment at a Widespread Panic - when the lights come down, the crowd noise goes up, and in your head, your mind is spinning with the thought of “What are the boys gonna kick it off with tonight?” Sometimes, the band will start it off nice and slow and ease the crowd into the night; other times, they will just smack you in the face with a 2 x 4’ and you are just along for the ride at that point. This week, we look at four shows with ‘random’ openers, featuring songs that ended up in the first slot only a handful of times, or just once. We start way back in 1987 with the only “Feelin’ Alright” opener, and then jump ahead to the 1990s with strong - and rare - showings from Paolo Soleri in New Mexico (1996) and the American Theater in STL (1999). Closing it out this week is probably one of top “HOLY S&%T” moments in the band’s history, the historic “Sweet Leaf” opener from the first night of NOLAWeen 2000. Good thing the UNO Lakefront Arena is well constructed because we both thought the damn roof was gonna come off!

Travelin' Light Tour 1998

We've done a lot of celebrating the 20th anniversary of things recently: the historic 10 night Paris run; the release of Panic's first official live album, Light Fuse Get Away; and the record-breaking Panic in the Streets. So it only makes sense that we move on to the 20th anniversary of Panic's big summer tour in 1998, the "Travelin' Light" Tour - Panic's first summer tour headlining sheds across this great country! So instead of giving the traditional 20th anniversary gift of china to our dear listeners, what do you think the boys from Bluest Tape give here in episode 60? Sandwiches.

We first touched on Panic's sandwich artistry way back in episode 25. But as Jeff dug through the first run of shows of the Summer 98 tour, he was struck by the frequency and uniqueness (is that a word?) of the sandwiches. So we return to make a second run at the topic. This week we check out some great stuff from the first couple weeks of that tour in Southern California, the Pacific Northwest, and the Great Potato State...

20 years ago, on April 18, 1998, Widespread Panic played a free record release release party to approximately 100,000 fans on the streets of their hometown Athens, Georgia. There were a lot of challenges to pulling something like this off, but with that band in that place at that time, it almost seemed meant to be. Coming off of a European tour which saw the band playing in some of the smallest venues they had played in a decade, they returned to their hometown and played to the largest crowd they had ever played to. And boy were they up to the task. A good chunk of the show was released on VHS, CD, and then finally DVD. This week, we play all of the tunes from this show that were not released officially. Included are three debuts: "All Time Low", "One Arm Steve", and "Christmas Katie" as well as some fantastic versions of Panic classics like "Diner" and the apt "Papa's Home".

We also were lucky enough to be joined by Gordon Lamb, Senior Writer and Columnist for Flagpole, and author of the new book, Widespread Panic in the Streets of Athens, Georgia. Gordon shed some light on the history of the Athens music scene, the political struggle of putting an event like this on, and of course the band itself.

This week we present Volume Two of our tribute to the 20th anniversary of Panic’s first - and greatest - live album, “Light Fuse, Get Away.” Last week, we created a first set; this week, we go with a second set that could have been played during spring/summer of 1997. Same rules apply: all SBDs and no repeats. Sure, it might be a little far afield, to have two instrumentals pre-drums. Yeah, it might be a bit absurd to have a set open with “Bowlegged Woman” and close with “Dear Mr. Fantasy.” Then, to follow it up with a “Low Spark” in the encore, well, there just might be a big old pile of melted faces laying on the dance floor. Last week, we restrained our inner fanboys; this week, not so much. Enjoy!

Pretty impossible to believe, but Widespread Panic’s first live album, “Light Fuse, Get Away” dropped twenty years ago this month. A true watershed in the band’s career, the album highlights the excellent Spring and Summer Tours of 1997. To celebrate this anniversary, we take a crack at putting together a Volume Two of “Light Fuse, Get Away.” Using only SBD recordings from the same tours, and no repeats from the album, we have put together what could certainly been reasonable first set from 1997. Sure, it would be great to include all of favorite songs, but come on, we cannot be total fanboys, can we? Join us as we visit Baltimore in July, and Asbury Park, suburban Austin, and Washington, DC in April.

Well, here we go, the final five shows from the epic ten show run from the Chesterfield Cafe. The boys brought the heat the first five nights, took a couple days off (Eiffel Tower? Louvre?), got all wound up again, and closed the run out with a bang. We get things rolling with a stellar “Impossible” on March 24, followed by a nasty “Driving Song > Arleen” sandwich on March 25. The last three nights have great moments, too, with hot versions of classic tracks like “Diner” and “Stop-Go,” and we close it out with what we think might be the best “Weight of the World” the band has ever played. Next time we do this, maybe we’ll learn some French and do the pod all bilingual-like. The episode kicks off with the second half of our conversation with Jonathan Spencer, a Panic stalwart from years gone by. Enjoy!

Widespread Panique in Paris 1998

Twenty years ago this month, Widespread Panic embarked on their first Transatlantic journey, landing in Paris for a what has become a legendary ten show run. Playing in front of a crowd that was at least 80-90% American each night out, the band rolled through classics, rarely played favorites, and took some serious setlist risks, too. While the sonic quality of the tapes leaves a bit to be desired, it is pretty amazing to hear the fans up and close personal with the band and their fellow travelers (a lot “Shhhhs” during the run!). All told, these shows represent some of Panic’s finest work, and, really set the stage for the Travelin’ Light Tour. This week, we look at the first five shows, filled with too many highlights to mention. Pay attention, though, to the smoking hot “Love Tractor” from 3/18 and damn fine “It Ain’t No Use” from 3/19. We start the episode chatting with Jonathan Spencer a Panic stalwart from years gone by. He tells the tale of how he sleuthed around and figured out the when and where of the Paris run, and some wild tales from inside the Chesterfield. Enjoy!

Whatever Happened To…???

Songs come and go - not everything can be around for 1,100-plus versions, like “Porch Song” and “Chilly Water.” Some of these songs make you wish they were still in the mix, and others make sense as to why they went away. Tonight, after some serious digging around the archive, we give you a mix of the two. This week, we start out with “Sun Keep,” a cool little Houser-led instrumental from 1990, and follow it up with “Benefactor,” a JB and Sunny rarity only played four times in the early nineties. Next, we visit Tipitina’s in NOLA for “Dog Song” and “Smoke and Burn,” two tracks played quite often but seem to have gone away for good. We close it out with another Houser song, “It Was You,” and “New Blue,” a nice mid-tempo ditty from Fall Tour 2001.

Last week, we did malty beers. This week, we do hoppy beers. The complete yin-and-yang of Jeff and Harvey is on display, although we do tend to agree on our Panic selections. Each pick this episode features a special guest. Harvey gets us started up in Stowe, VT, the home of the East Coast IPA, with a 1993 show featuring Warren Haynes’ second guest spot with Panic. Then, we jump ahead to two 1995 shows, one featuring the underrated Gibb Droll, the other with the great David Blackmon on fiddle. For the latter, Harvey pairs it with a hoppy beer that Jeff actually does enjoy, the Bearded Iris Homestyle. We close it out with probably one of the most famous sit-ins of all-time, September 7, 1997 with Branford Marsallis and Buckshot Lafonque. What a tour it was, the band hanging out for almost a full month in the Rocky Mountains, mostly in ski resort towns, but a few urban areas and college towns thrown in for good measure. Sit n Ski evolved from the first show to the last, starting out as a true acoustic show with some solo spots and guests like David Blackmon adding some incredible texture, depth, and emotion. Later, though, the tour becomes a sneak peek of what would become an incredible year in the band’s history. In this first episode, Harvey looks at the bookends of the tour, starting out in Boulder and Breckenridge, a brief stopover in Aspen, and then onto Crested Butte for the tour closer. Enjoy the ride!

The Bluest Tape kicks off 2018 proper-like with a set full of debuts from the mid-to-late 1990s. The Stable Geniuses here at the beloved pod have culled some interesting material this week, starting with very first “Diner,” oddly enough, from T. Lavitz’s next-to-last show in February 1992. Then, we head all the way out to Santa Fe for a pretty solid “Blackout Blues” from 1993 (Was it actually the best version ever? Maybe…), and back east for “Gradle” (1995) and “Greta” (1996). Apologies if you don’t like the lengthy conversation about Jackopierce. We close it out with return trips to Ames, IA in 1997 and Madison, WI in 1998 for the very first “You’ll Be Fine” and “Blue Indian,” respectively. Oh, New Year’s Eve. While it might be second to only Valentine’s Day in the annals of overrated holidays, it at least is a night for some epic concerts, from the Dead and the Allmans, to Panic and Phish. This week, we celebrate New Year’s Eve’s from Panic’s glory years, focusing on 1995 to 1999, all in the state of Georgia, each year getting bigger and bigger, culminating in the Millenium show at Philips Arena. While these shows might have some bust-outs, FTPs, and rarities, NYE Panic shows are best known for classic tracks played incredibly well. Wanna hear a top-3 “Hatfield?” We got it. Wanna hear an epic slow “Porch?” Got that too. Hope y’all made it through NYE safe and sound and that you haven’t broken your resolutions quite yet!

College Football Playoff, Redux

Man, were we wrong! Back in the late summer (episode #23 to be precise), we made our College Football Playoff picks, choosing Ohio State, USC, Florida State, and Alabama as our final four. Well, we only got one team right, but I think overall, we have a much better, more competitive, and more entertaining final four than we previously envisioned. So, congrats to the fans of Clemson, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Alabama. This week’s episode looks at selections from Tuscaloosa, Clemson, Athens, and, since Panic has never played in Norman, Oklahoma, we shift over to Tulsa for a solid show from summer 2000. Along the way, we give our pop culture recs for the week, Harvey rants about the fancy college dorms that kids have these days, Jeff says the Big Ten was better off missing the playoff this year, and, of course, we wish everyone safe travels, a Happy Chanukah, and a very Merry Christmas. We will be off on 12/26/17, so we’ll see you all again in 2018!

Random Panic Towns, Volume 1: Salem, Virginia

Since Panic first started hitting the road, they have always had an affinity for certain places: New Orleans, Red Rocks, Chicago, and Vegas are givens, along with lots of college towns. Sometimes, though, you look at the Everyday Companion, and you discover that the band has been in certain cities a BUNCH of times with little rhyme nor reason. Routing? Family members close by? Favorite club or promoter? One of these cities is Salem, Virginia, host to many a sleeper show over the past couple of decades. Tucked away in the Roanoke Valley and right along I-81, Salem has hosted Panic seven times since 1990. This episode focuses on three shows from Panic’s classic era: 9/16/95, 4/9/99, and 4/16/00. The band really stretches out in these selections, especially on 4/9/99, where both sets open with really nice improv jams. A must listen!

A Stroll Down Memory Lane with Harvey

Since Harvey let us do a show about Lawrence, Kansas, we let him do a Lexington, Kentucky show. Of course, Harvey is a proud UK grad and a diehard fan of Big Blue (Note: Jeff is neither of these things), but it wasn’t too much of a chore, though, as there have been some great shows in the Horse Capital of the World. Panic has been playing in Lexington since 1990, but really started to put it down in 1994 and beyond. For three straight years, they played great shows in the paddock of the Red Mile Racetrack, and then returned in 1999 to the old Memorial Coliseum on the UK campus. For many of us, there exists a special connection between our hometowns or college towns and Panic, so enjoy not just the music but also Harvey’s youthful tales and reminiscences. A little nostalgia isn’t so bad! Enjoy!

November 21. We don’t know what it means to you all, but for Jeff and Harvey, it means the beginning of a friendship that has carried them through nearly three dozen episodes of The Bluest Tape. We had traded tapes for a while, but never met face-to-face until a pre-show beer on 11/21/00. 17 years - did you know that furniture is the preferred gift for the 17th wedding anniversary? Random, right? Anyway, this week, we reminisce about that great Louisville show, talk about the genius of Carlton Smith, and highlight two other excellent Panic shows that took place on November 21. We touch on Fall 1999 with a jaunt up to New Haven, CT for a slightly reggae version of “Holden Oversoul,” and then on down to New York for a strong 1998 show at Roseland Ballroom. The band put their new sound system through the mill that night, with a scorching “Papa’s Home” and a super rare split “Love Tractor.” We close it out with 11/21/00 Louisville - enjoy and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Lawrence, Kansas 1993-1997

This episode is an ode to Lawrence, Kansas, a city that is home to the University of Kansas, the third-to-fifth best college basketball program in history, an 1863 Civil War massacre, and six stellar Widespread Panic concerts from 1993 to 1997. While we discuss all of these topics, plus talk about European bootlegs of Panic shows from the 1990s, we try and stay focused on the music, and boy, do we have some music this week. We kick things off in 1993 for the first show in the epic fourteen shows in fourteen days run that followed. The band returned for a couple of mid-July shows in 1994 (check out the jam between Driving and Chilly) and 1995, and came back for a great three show run from November 1997. The band is in prime form here - tight, creative, and flawless segues. Outside of NOLAWeen, Red Rocks, Oak Mountain, or NYE, there might not be a better collection of songs and setlists for three shows at the same venue - sensational stuff.

Sometimes, though, the band reminds us that the road to Halloween is paved with hidden gems, too. We are back with the second part of our conversation with Everyday Companion founder and true friend of the podcast, Ted Rockwell. We start the music with a clip from Ted’s very first Panic show, 7/22/92 at the Park West in Chicago. This is an absolutely sublime version of “Stop-Go,” one that really shows how much the band had progressed from those final five man shows early that same year. Next, we jump ahead to 1998 for the final show from the band’s first European Tour. Ted has picked another gem, a lengthy, adventurous “Diner” played with great intention before a small, but welcoming, British crowd. We wrap with some a couple of non-Panic highlights from the 2007 JB & Friends show at the House of Blues in Orlando, and a great track from Dave Schools’ side project, Acetate. This week, we welcome another special guest into the mix - founder of the Widespread Panic setlist database, Everyday Companion, Ted Rockwell. Ted has been following Panic since 1992, and has been an instrumental behind the scenes player in helping elevate the band in online circles for two decades. He and Will Duckworth put it up online back in 1995, and soon thereafter, published the first print copy of the Companion in 1996. It is hard to imagine to the Panic community without him! Ted made some great picks from throughout the band’s history, starting way back in 1988 in Atlanta, then a 1990 show from Murfreesboro, and closing it out with one of the last five-man band shows, the infamous Auburn University show from February 1992. It’s a pretty good journey this week, and we think that you’ll enjoy this trip into the wayback machine.

Wear Your Earplugs, Kids: Fall 1998

Well, usually about this time of year the temperature would start drop a bit, the leaves would turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red, and we’d be enjoying some warm cider by the fire. Alas, our world is warm, y’all - like really warm. So, even though the calendar says FALL, the weather says SUMMER. Either way, let’s dive into a pretty solid fall tour - 1998 - that will remind you that the weather will hopefully take a turn for the better very soon. This is some classic Midwestern Panic this week. Coming off the Travelin’ Light shed tour, the band gets back to the comfortable environs of old theaters and ballrooms, starting up in Minneapolis, headed down I-35 (and then over) to Cedar Rapids, and then on up to the Dairy State for three shows. Fall 98 was unique because it was the last stand of the band’s old PA system, and former FOH mixer, Danny, put it through its paces with Schools bombs galore. Enjoy another couple great Panic sandwiches, a classic combo from the first night of the Barrymore, and sleeper segment from the second night, including an intense, early version of “Climb to Safety.”

“Rock n Roll, or Whatever You Call It:” Panic and the Boys from Bloodkin

This week, we highlight a handful of songs brought to Widespread Panic by Daniel Hutchens and Eric Carter, aka Bloodkin. They came up at about the same time in Athens, and while Panic has achieved jam band royalty status, Bloodkin has remained under the radar, despite their massive songwriting output and far reaching influence, extending far beyond Panic. It is really hard to imagine Panic without the songs of Danny and Eric, from “Henry Parsons Died” to “End of the Show.” Selections include a handful of shows where the boys from Bloodkin sit in with Panic - it really doesn’t get much better than Danny and JB trading verses on “Quarter Tank of Gasoline” - including some rare FTP/only time played tunes. This episode is also remarkable for two reasons: Harvey makes a GRAND proclamation about one of the segments, and we (happily) play our first tracks from Widespread Panic 3.0, featuring the deft guitar work of Jimmy Herring. Enjoy!

The title of this episode is actually a JB’ism from 9/15/97, and we should all know by now that when John Bell dips into the well of ironic understatement, hold onto your hats (backwards or not). This week’s selections from the middle of the first leg of the Fall 1997 are classic Panic, and, if you’re from the “School of Heavy Panic” like we are, this episode is for you. We start with a “Chilly Water” from 9/19/97 in South Bend, Indiana (intro’d by another JB’ism - “Hope you like loud music!” - a tip of the hat to “True Stories” by the Talking Heads), and work our way backwards through the previous three shows all in Midwestern college towns. After a stop in Carbondale, Illinois for five songs we have yet to play on TBT, we go to Champaign, Illinois for a quick little “Can’t Get High > Jam,” and then end up in AMES, IOWA. Why all caps? Because with the shows Panic has played here over the years, they deserve the respect of AMES, IOWA in ALL CAPS. 4/26/93. 7/16/94. 9/15/97. Listen, learn, and love, good people. If you want to know what being at a Panic show in 1997 was like, this AMES, IOWA show is it - loud, crystal clear, in your face, and performed brilliantly. Check out the whole show. Everyone loves a good sandwich - whether they are the kind between two pieces of bread or when Panic splits a song in half. This week’s selections are both rare (uncommon) and well done (well executed). We start with a return to Buckhannon, West Virginia (episode 1) and a rare Dirty Business sandwich from 4/20/96. After a return to Red Rocks in 1998 for an inverted Pleas > Chilly > Pleas sandwich, we head to Harvey’s stomping grounds in Lexington, KY for a stellar Junior > Pusherman > Junior from 1999. A very un-festival like segment from Beale Street Music Festival follows. And we wrap things up (get it?) from 2 straight nights in Summer 2001. A Walkin sandwich from Little Rock that features a “little” Rock and Bears Gone Fishin > Papa Legba > Bears Gone Fishin from Tulsa, OK that gets a little out there at the end as it winds its way into Drums. All in all, we think these showcase some of Panic’s most original and experimental playing (and setlist creation). So, grab you favorite Shrimp Po-Boy, BLT, or your sandwich of choice, sit back, and dig on some sandwiches, Panic style.

The Bluest Tape College Football Preview, Redux

For this week’s Bluest Tape, we have a special guest, ESPN Senior Writer Mark Schlabach, who further breaks down the upcoming college football season for us. No surprise, he likes Ohio State and Alabama, too. Mark attended the University of Georgia from 1991-96, and, like many UGA students at that time, found himself at the Georgia Theatre and other venues around the South in pursuit of the “lingering lead.” Mark shares a few memories of what life was like in Athens during that era, and a great story about seeing Panic at the old War Eagle Supper Club in Auburn, AL. The selections this week reflect some of Mark’s favorite 1993-94 shows, including a stellar Athens NYE show, a killer “Low Spark” from the HORDE Tour, and two other nice sounding DSBDs from 1994. The interview closes out with a brief conversation about his new book with Paula Lavigne, VIOLATED: Exposing Rape at Baylor University amid College Football’s Sexual Assault Crisis, which dropped on August 22. Forget Phil Steele. Forget Pat Forde. Forget Tony Barnhart. When you want hard-hitting hot takes about the upcoming college football season, everyone knows that The Bluest Tape is the place to get them. What, that’s not the case? Okay, maybe we overstated a bit, but still, we kind of know what’s going on, so give us a chance. Anyway, we pair our preseason top four with four great shows from Widespread Panic’s illustrious past. We start out west with a post-Halloween 2000 gem from the Wiltern Theater featuring a rock legend on guitar, follow it up with a 1993 rarity from Harvey’s tape vault, and then head back to the Newport Music Hall in C-Bus for a nice selection from October 1995. We close out the show the way that the college football season will probably close out as well, with the houndstooth-clad folks in Tuscaloosa riding high yet again. So, get your red Solo cups out of storage - it’s football season!

Just a few short days ago, we remembered the fifteenth anniversary of Michael Houser’s passing. It seems like yesterday, doesn’t it? This week, we look back at Mikey’s career with several selections curated by Jeff. We start off where we often do, way back in 1996, this time in the heart of the fantastic fall tour at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison, WI. Go ahead, find a better a “Pilgrims.” Next, we share a selection that will likely raise some eyebrows, the epic (perhaps for the wrong reasons) “Airplane > Diner” from the infamous March 1997 in Santa Cruz, CA. Was Sunny on cough syrup? Did Mikey make the show better or worse? No matter, his playing in the transition between these two Panic classics is worthy of mention. Before we jump back into some Mikey rarities, we make a stop in Champaign, IL, for the start of the second set on a chilly November night in 2000. While the Carbondale show two nights later is widely revered as an all-timer, this Champaign show has some incredible moments, including this massive nine-minute “Sandbox.” We close it out with a demo version of “Humpy Galumpy,” which is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

It is truly hard to believe, but on August 10, 2017, it will have been fifteen years since Michael Houser succumbed to cancer. Obviously, Widespread Panic has carried on, and Houser’s memory and music will live on indefinitely, but it is good to pause, honor his legacy, and play some of our favorite cuts from the band’s classic era. This week, Harvey makes his picks, featuring cuts from three shows he attended from 1995-97. We get things started with a demo version of “Pilgrims” with Houser on vocals, followed by an extended selection from the ultimate sleeper show, November 2, 1996 in Columbus, Ohio. Pay special attention to the monstrous version of “Pigeons.” Next, we take a step back to fall 1995, with three songs from a Lexington, Kentucky show at a horse racing track. Lastly, we end up in Harvey’s hometown of New Orleans for Halloween 1997, the first - and dare we say, best - NOLAWeen show at the Lakefront Arena. We just need one word to describe this show: DINER. This one’s for you, Mikey - thank you for everything!

This week, with wish a happy 75th birthday to Jerry Garcia, a musician whose influence is certainly heard in Widespread Panic’s music in the past, the present, and likely in the future, too. Like many other jambands, Panic started as a Dead cover band, but unlike others, they quickly cast aside Dead covers for original material. The Dead ethos, though, certainly remained. Our selections this week include tracks frequently covered by Panic, the Grateful Dead, and the Garcia Band, plus some late Houser era jams and teases of Dead classics. Enjoy!

The One Where We Talk About Carrot Top For Way Too Long

We close out the month of July with the four show run that closed out the summer 1997 tour. Visiting three outdoor venues in three states, plus a special theater gig in Tampa, finds the boys in fine form after a relatively short, but still grueling, summer tour. The best part of this run is the quality of the tapes, as three of the four shows were DSBDs leaked by the band during the prep for the upcoming Light Fuse, Get Away live album. Clearly, Jeff and Harvey did not have too many show notes this time around, because they do spend altogether way too long talking about Carrot Top, who intros the band - and sits in on percussion - for the first time in Tampa, but do not let that dissuade from listening this week.

Happy Birthday, Jojo! It’s been 25 years since John ‘Jojo’ Hermann joined Widespread Panic - can you believe it? His New Orleans-influenced keyboard stylings have become essential to the Panic sound of the last couple decades, just behind Houser’s guitar and JB’s growl. Panic has typically had a show on July 18, and the band usually has gone out of its way to celebrate Jojo’s day of birth, from giving him the chance stretch out on the synth to a gorilla presenting him with a birthday cake on stage. This episode starts out in 1995, with an in-store performance at Bohemian Music, a record store-slash-piercing parlor in Billings, Montana, and winds up in Memphis, Tennessee during a stellar and steamy two-night stand in 1997. In between, stop in Raleigh and Indianapolis for Panic classics. So, Happy Birthday, Jojo, here’s to your health - SKOL!

July 1999

This week, we find ourselves in the midst of a tour through America’s Heartland in the blazing hot summer of 1999. When the Bluest Tape got started a few months ago, a 1999-centric show was not on our radar, but looking back, summer 1999 was pretty strong, starting out at Red Rocks, followed by a couple great ones in Montana and Wyoming, and then onto the Midwest. This episode starts off with some of the heaviest Panic we have played to date, an abbreviated second set from the Ranch Bowl in Omaha, which segues nicely into the next night’s opener in Kansas City, featuring a soulful “Wish You Were Here.” From there, it’s off to Peoria, Illinois and into the seventh circle of Hell, aka, the Madison Theater. It was 100 outside, 90 inside and damned if there weren’t some clouds - real ones - forming in the lobby during the second set. The episode ends up in suburban Detroit on a Monday night, featuring one of Jeff and Harvey’s favorite selections to date, a stellar - and quite long - “Glory” followed by the Monday show staple, “Last Dance.” Wake up, wake up, the coffee’s hot, the orange juice is cold, and no need to say goodbye, as we will be back again next week!

Panic does July 4th

Well, Happy Birthday USA! You’ve been around for 241 years now and have had the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, but you just keep on keeping on. What better way to celebrate this year’s birthday than with Widespread Panic, whose history of shows on July 4th is substantial and, as you will hear this episode, pretty darn good. We start way back in 1990 with the “4th of July X-Plosion” in Columbia, South Carolina, followed up by another outdoor show two years later in Richmond, Virginia. The boys and Brown Cat got wise and started booking summer shows in the North and the West - in case you didn’t know it, summer in the South is, to say the least, fricking hot - and we follow the band up to Summerfest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for the first of a two night stand in 1997, and then out west to San Francisco for a tasty segment from the epic four night run in 2000. We close it out at Harmony Park in Minnesota with a blazing hot “Four Cornered Room” with a little surprise in the middle and, yes, another story from Jeff about camping. We promise this is the last one. Enjoy!

In case you missed it last week, we decided that if FDR had decided “swamp draining” was a better idea than, say, rebuilding and improving an entire country, we probably wouldn’t have Red Rocks Amphitheatre. It’s an absolutely stunning place, and its clear that the boys turn it up to 11 each year they head up the mountain to Morrison. This week, we get to hear all about that time Jeff went camping with hard shell Samsonite suitcase, which is just the kind of added value you get here at the Bluest Tape. This week, we bring you the best of 1999-2002, including some classic collaborations with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, a ripping Thought Sausage from 2000, and some memorable moments from 2001 and 2002.

Panic at Red Rocks, Part 1

So, here in this age of “swamp draining” and governmental “deconstruction,” we give you a case study on why sometimes our government isn’t all bad. The absolutely breathtaking Red Rocks was, in fact, a government project, constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration during the New Deal. While Mother Nature did most of the heavy lifting in creating a natural amphitheatre, it took tons of concrete, thousands of man hours, and yes, the freaking United States government, to turn it into the finest concert venue in the United States, nay, the world. Since 1991, Widespread Panic has been tearing it up in the village (dare we say, “our kind of little village?”) of Morrison, Colorado, playing classic tunes for the first time, dropping rarities, and bringing some of their favorite musicians and best friends on stage. This episode starts off in July 1993, the second of two consecutive HORDE shows that summer and jumps to May 1996 for Panic’s first headlining gig at Red Rocks with the boys hitting their stride at the start of the second set. We jump ahead to 1997 for a fantastic four song run from the opening night, and the highly underrated Holden > Last Straw combo. We close out this episode with a couple of selections from June 1998, just a few days before the band headed back to Europe for a few festival gigs. Enjoy!

Panic Goes to the Zoo

This week, we take a listen to selections from Widespread Panic’s several visits to zoos throughout the United States. The band has always enjoyed playing shows surrounded by natural beauty, but zoos provide an extra added bonus of exotic wildlife. If nothing else, it gave JB and Garrie something random to talk about from the stage. We start off with back-to-back visits to the Jackson Zoo in Mississippi, where Panic played in both 1994 and 1995 (a stellar show, by the way), followed by a trip the Cincinnati Zoo for an all-time favorite summer 96 concert. From there, we head Up North for two shows in the state of Minnesota. The first, 1994 show at the Minnesota Zoo, features a sublime “Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys” with Kofi Burbridge on flute, while our show closer, “Knockin’ Around the Zoo” comes from a visit to the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in fall 2001. Yep, a show about zoos closing with a song about a zoo (well, sort of - it’s about a mental institution) not played in a zoo. The irony was not lost on us - we hope it is not lost on you, either.

11: Big Star Played There Jun 06, 2017

Fall 1992

Harvey flies solo this week as Jeff remained without power in Memphis because of storm damage. We look back at a three night run in Fall 1992. The first two shows we cover haven't really circulated digitally. It's interesting to hear the band at an interesting stage in their development. Fresh off of the first HORDE tour and a lengthy tour out west, we pick things up as they come back south.
A Wednesday night on Beale Street in Memphis, a Thursday night on the campus of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and a Friday night at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Viriginia are our venues this week. Also of note are three different, solid openers: Junior Kimbrough, The Samples, and the Gibb Droll Band.
In the meantime, we all look forward to Jeff's return for episode 12 next week.

Playing with Intention, Vol. 2

We continue with part 2 of the Playing with Intention theme. Col. Bruce Hampton's Zambi message of living and playing music with “intention,” stemming from his experience with the band at a show in 1988 with about 25 people in attendance. Basically, the band played for 25 like they were playing for 25,000, and any band that can pull that off - with “intention” - is a band worthy of attention and admiration.

We continue with the next night of the 1998 Australia tour, March 10, 1998 in Adelaide, Australia (according to Google Maps, 21 hours by car from the previous venue in Byron Bay. We look at a huge mid-set segment here, featuring "some guy" named John Yaku on didgeridoo during Drums. We also come back state side for a sparsely-attended Fall 1998 show in Buffalo - the last show the boys ever played the Nickel City (unless you count a show in 2000 that was cancelled due to lack of ticket sales!)

9: "You All Feel Like a Million People" May 23, 2017

When Col. Bruce Hampton spoke of Widespread Panic with admiration, he often used the word “intention,” stemming from his experience with the band at a show in 1988 with about 25 people in attendance. Basically, the band played for 25 like they were playing for 25,000, and any band that can pull that off - with “intention” - is a band worthy of attention and admiration. Even as Panic grew in prominence and began drawing crowds throughout the U.S., there were still occasional nights when the front gate was less than ideal. In this episode, we look at two shows where the crowds were notoriously thin, October 14, 1996 in Monroe, Louisiana and March 8, 1998 in Byron Bay, Australia - during their first trip abroad. Instead of mailing it in, the boys brought the heat to the couple hundred people (at most) in attendance each night with inspired, setlist rarities, and a bit of good humor about small gathering they were all a part of.

8: Four nights, four cities, four shows May 16, 2017

Panic closed out spring 1997 with a bang, putting together 8 shows in 10 days, with 3 of the final 4 shows being absolute classics. Episode 7 showcases the best of the best from perhaps the best run of shows Panic has ever done, outside of Halloween, NYE, or Red Rocks. We start off with an all-timer from the Palace in Louisvlle, a magical 2nd set “Airplane.” Heading up Interstate 65 into Chicago, the boys celebrated WXRT’s 25th birthday with a crazy “Rebirtha > Low Spark > Red Beans” opener, before good friend David Blackmon took the stage with his fiddle. The next night, the boys headed across town to the Aragon Ballroom to complete their siege of Chicago, before heading north to St. Paul, Minnesota to close out the tour. The tour closer is an underrated show, with Blackmon playing better than ever and the boys finishing strong. Hell, JB had the hat on backwards and a baseball jersey on, which used to be good signs of what was to come. Put the baby to bed, tie down the cat, and play this one LOUD.

7: Our daddy! A tribute to Col. Bruce Hampton (Ret.) May 09, 2017

In the early morning hours of May 2, 2017, this world lost - but another world gained - the great Col. Bruce Hampton (ret.) after collapsing during the tribute concert for his 70th birthday at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. From the Hampton Grease Band to the Aquarium Rescue Unit and all points beyond, Hampton’s influence on the jamband scene and Southern music in general is without parallel. Widespread Panic, Phish, Derek Trucks, and Jimmy Herring have all fallen under the Hampton’s tutelage at one time or another over the last 30 years. In this special episode, we highlight passages from five shows where Hampton sat in with Panic, beginning in December 1990 and wrapping up at Halloween 2001 in New Orleans. We are also joined by Geoff Hanson, Producer and Director of The Earth Will Swallow You and Widespread Panic: Live at Oak Mountain, to get his thoughts on Col. Bruce.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends, yet despite our sadness, we find it fitting that the good Colonel, on his own terms, went out playing music with his friends, concluding a remarkable 40-plus year career.

6: A Hat-backwards kind of night May 02, 2017

Panic fans have long cherished tapes from Spring 1997 with numerous SBDs making their way into circulation, perhaps because of the generosity of Dave Schools. Early 1997 was filled with great shows and interesting setlists, highlighted this week by a first set “Feelin’ Alright’ from May 1, an unexpectedly rare “Stop-Go” sandwich from May 2, an all-time favorite “Sandbox > Just Kissed My Baby” from May 3, and our set closer, a mellow “Gradle” from Jazz Fest on May 4. As an added bonus, we have included some of favorite “JB-isms” from this tour. Mr. Bell was in an especially jovial mood during this last week-plus of the tour, and provided the crowd with some real gems from the dais. Enjoy!

5: "This World Is Nuts" Apr 25, 2017

4: "Bless Your Soggy Little Hearts" Apr 17, 2017

This week, we take trip back 15 years to 2002 for the final spring tour of Michael Houser’s tenure in Widespread Panic. By the time April 2002 rolled around, rumors were fairly rampant about his health, and of course, were confirmed when he left the band in July, and sadly passed away in August. Spring tour was a short little seven show jaunt through the band’s original stomping grounds, the good ole American South. The tour began with a raucous two-night stand in Raleigh, followed by one-offs in Asheville and Savannah, and closed out with an epic three-nighter at Oak Mountain. We kick it off this week with a raunchy version of “Ride Me High” from 4/20/02, and close it out with the “A of D > Cream Puff War > Fishwater” opener from 4/26/02, plus some great tracks in between. Instrumental selections have been a staple of Panic setlists since its earliest days in Athens. They can be show and set openers, mid-set tempo changers, welcome surprises, and, as the kids like to say, pure fire, too. Today’s selections just scratch the surface of Panic’s cache of wordless wonders. We start with a “Maggot Brain” opener from 1994, a rare “Machine” separated from its usual partner-in-crime, “Barstools and Dreamers,” and a speed metal version of “B of D” from Spring 2000.

We continue making our way through Spring 1996, finding the band in rare form in Columbia, SC, Statesboro, GA, and Norfolk, VA. Listen for an especially intense version of “Cream Puff War,” a rare mid-set “Dream Song,” the last performance of the Scott Joplin ragtime classic, “Solace,” and an intense “Porch Song” set closer. If episode one didn’t convince you that Spring 1996 is a keeper, then these three selections certainly will!
