Poetry in Motion: Van Dijk, fans and excitement returns - but Liverpool need to be wary of repeating transfer mistake Jul 17, 2021
    Show notes

The sun is out, Virgil van Dijk is back, Ibrahima Konate looks like he’s going to settle in just fine... and within the next month we are going to see fans back at Anfield. Little wonder, then, the latest Poetry in Motion podcast, hosted as ever by Neil Fitzmaurice, and featuring Paul Gorst and debutant Mark Wakefield, is brimming with optimism ahead of the new season. But while the Reds look stronger than ever at the back after the return of Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, plus the signing of Konate, are they in danger of repeating last season’s transfer mistake - but in a different area of the pitch? Fitzy and the panel discuss whether Liverpool need to strengthen their midfield, examining reported interest in Florian Neuhaus and Houssem Aouar, and also ask whether another forward is needed, too. But whatever the Reds' squad looks like come the opening day at Norwich City, they will go into the new campaign knowing they will have their 12th man back.

Liverpool.com podcast: How Liverpool will line-up at Norwich City on opening day | Konate, Jones, Keita Jul 14, 2021
    Show notes

Anyone excited for the new season? Well, with Euro 2020 over and those Liverpool training pictures being released everyday, Mo Stewart, James Martin and Matt Addison certainly are. So for this week’s Liverpool.com podcast, they pick Jurgen Klopp’s side for him for the Premier League opener at Norwich City, which is now just little over a month away. But it’s not as easy as you might think given that Reds boss Klopp still has 10 players - Jordan Henderson, Andy Robertson, Alisson, Thiago, Fabinho, Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota, Xherdan Shaqiri, Harry Wilson and Neco Williams - on their holidays, and a number of others working their way back to full fitness after serious injury. So it could give the likes of new boy Ibrahima Konate, Curtis Jones and Naby Keita the chance to start the Carrow Road clash on August 14.

Inside failed Nabil Fekir transfer and how Liverpool got lucky with narrow £52m escape for Coutinho replacement Jul 13, 2021
    Show notes

Wind back to 2018, and Liverpool spent more heavily in the transfer market than they ever had before. Backed in part by the £143m deal that had seen Philippe Coutinho move to Barcelona six months earlier - though £75m of that had already been splashed on Virgil van Dijk - Liverpool then went and signed Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri for a combined total of around £170m. But they could very easily have spent another £52m, having been minutes away from a transfer being announced for French attacking midfielder Nabil Fekir. So, for this special podcast, Matt Addison is joined by Kristian Walsh, who was working on the Liverpool ECHO's sports desk at the time, Spanish football writer Andrew Miller, who specialises in Real Betis, the club that Fekir plays for now, and finally Jonathan Johnson, a French football expert who gives the view from Lyon, as they explain why the deal collapsed, and how that has impacted the player himself and Liverpool since. Certainly, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool could have taken a very different path had they pressed ahead with a move for the number 10...
