Blocked Party – Stefan Heck & John Cullen

Episode 76: Molly Lambert v. SKD Knickerbocker May 04, 2020
    Show notes

Molly Lambert (writer, Night Call) scoops up one of the most prestigious blocks in an election year: the Public Affairs Agency that represents Joe Biden and many others, after she discovers one of their prime tactics for “managing crisis” (it’s dumb and bad). It’s some serious political talk, but we manage to temper that with our usual silliness, as the Blocked Boys get into elementary school Sports Day, creating weird beverage combos as kids, and a brand-new Patreon tier: John drinks the Ben Bartch chaos smoothie. We also tackle Canadian television, Megan McArdle’s insane coronavirus theory, and John ends the show with another one of his classic “bad food opinions”.

If you want more bad opinions (but great content), you can donate to the show at https://patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5/month gets you access to three bonus episodes every single month! Plus our whole back catalogue! By the time you listen to it all, we’ll be licking each other’s ice creams again! After a long wait, we finally have the video episode up where Stefan teaches John how to play Hearthstone, and this month, we’ll have the Will Weldon video bonus episode from last Friday where we watch a bunch of strange internet stuff together, a mailbag, and much more. You also get access to our Discord for the $5, a great and fun server with a wonderful community. Join today!

Molly Lambert is a writer and podcaster who hosts the very popular Night Call podcast with Tess Lynch and Emily Yoshida. She can be found on Twitter at @mollylambert.

Episode 75: Branson Reese v. Scott Adams Apr 27, 2020
    Show notes

One of our favourite targets is BACK, baby! Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert, returns with a vengeance, and Branson Reese (artist, Rude Tales of Magic) is here to tell us how he managed to get blocked by the trigger-happy cartoonist turned horny, right-leaning weirdo. This episode gets wild right off the hop, as the boys reminisce about a story submitted to their previous podcast regarding Mr. Buckles, a child's pet who met a very tragic end, and it only gets wilder from there as we delve into the chaos breakfast of an NFL offensive tackle draftee, fighting with your childhood friends over video games, and the chonky baby. Plus, Stefan walks us through his crazy week on Twitter, as he tricked multiple journalists into thinking the Steak'Umms Twitter guy was the son of Branch Davidian leader David Koresh. Like we said, this episode is wild.

CW: this episode contains a story about animal death, however, there is no cruelty or abuse involved. It is found on the show from 4:00-11:20, if you wish not to hear it.

Something you might wish to hear though? Bonus episodes! That's right! Bonuses! More of this show! Head on over to https://patreon.com/blockedparty for THREE bonus episodes every damn month. This month, we had the boys from YKS on the show for a wild time, plus we have one video episode up, the live Cameo episode with Jamie Loftus and coming this week, Stefan teaches John how to play the online card game Hearthstone! We also have newsletters, a fantastic Discord server, and other perks, so check it out!

Branson Reese is an artist/cartoonist who has a book of his work coming out in June on Oni Press called "Hell Was Full" and hosts a live-play D&D podcast called "Rude Tales of Magic". He can be found on Twitter at @bransonreese.

Episode 74: Graham Clark v. The Cast of American Pie Apr 20, 2020
    Show notes

Graham Clark (comedian, Stop Podcasting Yourself) returns to the show and does something few of our guests have tried to do, in that he tries to get blocked just so he can be on the program. Not only does the brave Graham try to get blocked, but he tries to get blocked by the entire cast of 1999 teen horndog film American Pie, and resorts to bribery to do it. Is he successful? You'll have to listen to find out. Before Graham even reveals his Block Tale, The Blocked Boys talk 90s movies as John and Becca continue their rewatching of nostalgic classics, and that dovetails into talk of Harrison Ford, Will Smith, Keanu Reeves, and giant spiders. Elsewhere, we go in on cereal, candy, quarantine snacks, isolation protestors, Muppets, and Stefan's birthday.

If you want to celebrate like it's your birthday, you can do so by donating to our Patreon at https://patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5 a month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every dang month. This month, we had the boys from Your Kickstarter Sucks on the show, plus we have our live bonus with Jamie Loftus coming up AND Stefan teaches John how to get even more online by learning the digital card game Hearthstone. We have a newsletter tier as well, where John revealed this week he's rewatching Entourage, and a great Discord community you can also get in on. Check it all out on Patreon right now and support your favourite BBs.

Graham Clark is currently selling beard paintings for the Vancouver Food Bank and you can ask him about commissions at his twitter, @grahamclark. He is also one half of the wildly successful comedy podcast, Stop Podcasting Yourself, which can be found at @stoppodcasting.

Episode 73: Alison Stevenson v. Mindy Kaling Apr 13, 2020
    Show notes

Alison Stevenson (writer, comedian) joins us to help get to the bottom of a mystery John calls "The Mindy Project": why did Mindy Kaling block her? It's another Block Tale where we try and help our guest get unblocked, as she cannot figure out how or why she got blocked and tries to enlist our help. Speaking of needing help, Stefan requires some help with his damn goatee, as he's finally given up on trying to grow a full quarantine beard and has now become a "Goatee Guy". The Blocked Boys also learn about the business of dick pics, who the New Hope Club are, and Stefan gives us an update on the COVID-19 truthers he talked about on the show a few weeks prior.

If you want to make sure you are always fully updated, you can donate to the show at https://patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5 a month gets you access to THREE full bonus episodes, every single month. We have a big month coming up in April, as we try to bring some sweet medicine to your self-isolation in the form of a video episode featuring Stefan teaching John to play Hearthstone, a "live" episode watching bad Cameos with Jamie Loftus, and another edition of BPxYKS, where Jesse Farrar and Michael Hale join the boys for a fun hangout episode where we laugh and talk about the good ol' times. It's gonna be a great month and we appreciate all of your support during these weird times.

Alison Stevenson has a show on Adult Swim called The Perfect Women, and she will critique your dick pic on Twitter at @JustAboutGlad.

    Episode 72: Eli Yudin v. ?uestlove Apr 06, 2020
    Show notes

Eli Yudin (comedian, What a Time To Be Alive) joins the Blocked Boys and it's clear they're all getting stir-crazy, as this is our longest episode to date, chatting about blocks you didn't know you had, especially when they're from people you respect as Eli gets blocked by the famed drummer from The Roots. With all this episode (and spare) time, the BBs cover a lot of topics: what to drink in the morning, cross-border references, Animal Crossing, Dragons Den, sports commentators, clothes we loved as kids, and Stefan shows John a series of gross images that John hates. What else is new?

You know what else is new? Our bonus content! You can donate to the show over at https://patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5 a month gets you access to THREE fresh bonus episodes every damn month. Last month, we recorded our last two in-person episodes as we watched some Cameos and did a mailbag, and we posted the audio from our live show with Chris James. This month, we have another live show coming up, plus Stefan teaches John how to play Hearthstone in an all-new video episode. It's gonna be a great one, and we appreciate all your donations in this difficult time. We hope you're keeping well.

Speaking of live shows, we have another one coming up THIS FRIDAY, April 10th, as we're gonna watch some terrible Cameos live with our good friend and fan fave Jamie Loftus. RSVP to live@blockedparty.com for an invitation to the show, which will be at 10 pm EST/7 pm PST.

And finally, you can follow Eli on Twitter @eliyudin and catch his Twitch stream at https://twitch.tv/pig_dog .

Episode 71: Nikki Glaser v. DM Sliders Mar 30, 2020
    Show notes

Nikki Glaser (comedian, "Bangin'" out now on Netflix!) gives us a glimpse into the DMs of a female celebrity, and it's uhh....not good. We delve into the push and pull of wanting to possibly meet the right person through the DMs, while also needing to deal with the full frontal assault from everyone else, as we look at four different times dudes unsuccessfully tried to strike up a conversation. It's another remote episode as Stefan and John are socially separated and Nikki is at home with her parents in St. Louis, so we discuss the merits of being quarantined with your partner as opposed to your parents, and Nikki ponders her potential cancellation over comments we make towards the old couple who drank aquarium cleaner and the TikTok guy who licked a toilet seat. Plus! Stefan and Nikki go in on John's dad energy, Nikki weighs in on Stefan's quarantine goatee, and John tells the embarrassing story of hitting on Nikki on Twitter in 2011.

If you don't want to be embarrassed, you could tell your friends that you donate $5 a month to our Patreon at https://patreon.com/blockedparty, where that donation gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every dang month! The social isolation hasn't slowed us down either, as we have FOUR bonuses this month, a Cameo episode with Christine Bortolin, a mailbag, a video recording of the live Zoom show we did on Friday, AND John finally acquiesces to Stefan's demands that he learn Hearthstone in another extra-special video episode. We know times are tight, but we appreciate all of your donations and we promise to keep the great content rolling over the next little while as we're all stuck indoors. So come join us on our descent into madness!

Episode 70: Kate Willett v. John Cusack Mar 23, 2020
    Show notes

Kate Willett (comedian) joins us for our first-ever fully remote episode, as John, Stefan, and Dan all observe social distancing despite living 5 minutes away from each other. The episode is understandably a bit COVID-heavy, as we make sense of this new world around us, ponder whether this will finally prompt the United States to make changes to their healthcare system, and worry that any sign of diarrhea will be a harbinger of bad things to come. But the Blocked Boys manage to stray off-topic too as we try to make some light of our situations and get into nephews, video games, cooking, and Kate tells us about self-isolating with a brand-new partner plus a very redemptive Block Tale.

If you want to redeem yourself in self-isolation, you can do so by donating $5/month to the show at https://patreon.com/blockedparty. That $5 will bring you our entire back catalogue, which features over 40 episodes and this week will bump up to 20 newsletters. Plus your $5 grants access to our Discord server, which has started its own quarantine content with some online gaming and a lively chat. We want to make sure you have all the Blocked Boy content you need in these trying times, and we're gonna keep producing bonus episodes as we can.

SPEAKING of bonus content, we're also going to be doing our first-ever Blocked Party Live!(ish) this FRIDAY, March 27th. Join us at 10 pm EST/7 pm PST on Zoom as we present the live show we wanted to do a week ago, but couldn't because of the virus. Send us your info at live@blockedparty.com and we'll make sure you get the invite for what should be a great show.

Episode 69: Jaya Sundaresh v. Jon Favreau Mar 16, 2020
    Show notes

It's episode 69 (nice), so you know what that means: it's one life cycle of the podcast, as Jaya Sundaresh (journalist, Jaya Time) brings it all back to where we started, by getting blocked by Pod Save America dweeb Jon Favreau. Like many before her, Jaya gained a following by dunking on him repeatedly, and we're all too happy to set her up for the alley-oop. You may think that's a cheap sports metaphor, but it's apt, as we hear from a listener who got blocked by OJ Simpson, and we only talk about the virus a little bit, as Stefan reveals his new plan for content in the wake of self-isolation, and John shares what he thinks is the best tweet of the corona saga so far.

I don't even need a fun tagline this week, because you're indoors and you need some content! Well, we have a whole lot. Only $5/month gets you access to our ENTIRE back catalogue, for those moments when you want to avoid getting sick in public by making yourself sick at home listening to us idiots. We will also have THREE new bonus episodes this month including this week, as we do another Word Up! Cameo episode with a new feature: we can see people's instructions for the celebs. It gets wild, and fan fave Christine Bortolin joins us to break it all down. Plus, that $5 gets you access to our Discord, the best darn community on the internet. So join us, we have lots of fun stuff waiting for you as we ride the 'Rona together.

    Episode 68: Adam Christie v. ??? Mar 09, 2020
    Show notes

Adam Christie (comedian) refuses to tell the Blocked Boys who his block is, and the surprise paid off for us, so we figure it should have the chance to pay off for you in one of the more memorable Block Tales that ends with the three men in song. The Blocked Boys continue along their usual path of destruction, starting a little on the crude side but ending with the sweetest Top 3 yet. In between, we discuss Adam's new website, frequent flyer miles, Lunchables, parents, and John's album recording.

If you're hoping to reach 100K status with Blocked Party this year, you'll join the Patreon at https://patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5/month gets you access to THREE amazing bonus episodes every month AND our top-secret Discord, which has a wonderful community. This past month, we did another all-Cameo bonus episode, we played trivia, and we finally did the video reveal of all 37 Funko Pops John received as part of the #FunkoPopChallenge. This month, we've got another Patreon goal reached, as John is forced to eat the first Big Mac of his life and review it, Ian K. style with a video review in his car in the style of Peep This Out!. It's gonna be a doozy and you won't wanna miss it!

    Episode 67: Beth Stelling v. Her Ex-Stepdad Mar 02, 2020
    Show notes

Sweeps Month comes to an end with another huge guest, as Beth Stelling (comedian) joins us to break things off with her ex-stepdad quite a few years after her mom did, as she blocks him live on the show after one of the craziest Block Tales ever. It’s well-known old people cannot tell time, but he provides a crazy example, finally getting upset with a joke Beth told about him about seven years after she released it. The BBBs (Blocked Boys n’ Beth) don’t stop their targets there, as they aim their sights at dentists, veterinarians, veterinarian dentists, Michael Bloomberg, Love is Blind, and Stefan’s newest absolutely absurd take involving breakfast cereals that has to be heard to be believed.

One thing you don’t need to hear to believe is that donating $5 a month to our Patreon at https://patreon.com/blockedparty will get you access to three phenomenal bonus episodes every month. February was our Sweeps Month and we pulled out all the stops, bringing in Chris Locke for an all-Cameo bonus episode, Jesse Farrar for Trivia Party 2, and we finally released the long-awaited Pop THIS Out! video episode, where John, Stefan, and Kevin Banner open all 37 of the terrible Funko Pops John received over the last two months. It’s insane! You gotta get over here!
