BYB Weekend Edition #3: Talking the Tigers Farm with Chris Brown Apr 13, 2019
    Show notes

While the Minor League Tracker podcast is on a brief hiatus, BYB Podcast host Brandon Day pinch hits with a way too early look at the Tigers farm system. Today we are joined by friend of BYB, Chris Brown. He writes about prospects and the Tigers farm system for the long-running site, Tigstown. He is the co-host of the Tigers SRD podcast alongside Roger Martin, and has recently launched the Locked On Tigers Podcast, a compact daily podcast hitting on all the Tigers news of the day.

It is, of course, too early to draw even vague conclusions about the Tigers farm system this year. But, we take the early temperature of the team's starting pitching prospects. We check in on a night of blown saves throughout the system and some of the better relief prospects the Tigers have. Finally, we look at some of the position players, and consider the Tigers efforts to improve in player development versus how much of improvement is simply on the players themselves.

BYB Podcast #41: Give us taco and margarita Tuesdays at the ballpark Apr 03, 2019
    Show notes

The Tigers have pitched and scrapped their way out to a 3-3 start, despite rather weak efforts at the plate. Brandon and Ashley discuss the merits of the Tigers rotation through their first six turns. Niko Goodrum gets his usual dose of love, and we very much enjoyed Bryce Harper's return to Washington. This was recorded on the night of taco and margarita Tuesday, in the small sample size glow of the season's first week, and with regard to these conditions we refuse to be held responsible for any claims, suggestions or arguments put forth in the recording of this podcast. Dustin Peterson came up big, and all you can talk about is Niko Goodrum. This rotation, eh? Ok, let's just hold onto our butts because it's six games.Bryce Harper returned to Washington like a boss. It was a fun first week of baseball around the league. The David Hess situationCheck out Ashley's YouTube channel.

BYB Weekend Wrap-Up : Tigers ride good starting pitching to a split series Apr 01, 2019
    Show notes

We're going to try a little something extra with the BYB Podcast this year. The normal full length episodes featuring Brandon Day and Ashley MacLennan will continue as usual, and will generally drop on Wednesday. But we'll also be adding in a weekend edition. This is the first of that series. Generally they'll come out on Saturday or Sunday, and allow a quick rundown of the Tigers' results for the week, who had the standout performances (both good and bad), and touching on any other major news around the franchise. Hopefully this allows the full podcast to breathe without having to catch up on the full week's news, and allows us to touch on the major stories, both from the Tigers organization, and around the wider MLB landscape, and also to digress at length and at will. Four starts, and the Tigers rotation looks great. However, the Blue Jays lineup is bad, so don't get too excited.Jeimer Candelario broke out on Sunday, but it was a rough go for the offense against a pretty good-looking Blue Jays rotation in the Rogers Centre. The bullpen was a little shaky in the backend, but got several strong performances as well. The Toledo Mud Hens kick things off on Thursday of this week, so let's run down some of the arms in Toledo that are likely to make an impact in the majors this season.

BYB Podcast #39: Michael Fulmer is hurt and it's awful Mar 20, 2019
    Show notes

It's a grim day in Tigertown as Michael Fulmer is out for the year with a blown elbow. We discuss some of the fallout from this most awful news, and whether the Tigers should take the opportunity to get a little more radical in deploying their pitching staff. Baseball appears ready to confront its labor issues before things get worse, and our old colleague, Emily Waldon, is leading the charge. Plus, Mike Trout gets paid in full, our season preview series continues, and we answer your listener questions. Michael Fulmer is headed toward UCL reconstruction surgery and we're a bit gutted.Who takes Fulmer's spot in the rotation, amid other fallout from the news?MLB seems to be taking the ongoing labor strife seriouslyEmily Waldon pushed the minor leaguers pay to the forefront with a great piece for the AthleticMike Trout signs an extension that is easily the biggest contract ever, and still not big enough.Quick previews of the AL/NL EastListener questions

BYB Podcast 37: Halfway to Opening Day Mar 07, 2019
    Show notes

As the initial spring training glow gives way to the dog days of Grapefruit League play, we take the Tigers temperature and look over some of news, and the perennial "best shape of their lives" stories from Lakeland. But with Opening Day just three weeks away, there should be a lot more news as cuts start coming in waves, and more games are televised. Right now, highlights from games are just whetting the appetite for opportunities to sit down a watch a few hours of Tigers baseball on another frigid day in the north. Casey Mize has impressed.Miguel Cabrera has been healthy and swinging the bat well.Daniel Norris and Michael Fulmer, among others, are a little scary so far.Bryce Harper finally signed on with the Phillies and ended our long winter's vigil. We go off the rails with our weekly fixation on Trevor Bauer.

BYB Podcast 36: Manny Machado delivers the goods Feb 20, 2019
    Show notes

Brandon and Ashley do their best to deliver the goods in the wake of spring training opening, and the Padres' monster acquistion of Manny Machado. The path was twisty, but we examined the minor news out of spring camp, argued one last time for another free agent addition, and answered listener questions. We also digressed into serial killers for some reason. Camp is underway and so far, Daniel Norris, Michael Fulmer, and Miguel Cabrera are obviously in the best shape of their lives.Casey Mize is making a good impression, as are the Tigers investments in technology. We consider the Tigers' Opening Day starter, and whether there isn't still a move that makes sense for them. The Manny Machado deal and its impact on the game.Listener questions

BYB Podcast 35: Truck Day means we're a week away Feb 06, 2019
    Show notes

Brandon and Ashley return to gnaw on a meager diet of Tigers news. The Tigers and their gear are making their way south for spring camp, and pitchers and catchers are set to report in less than a week. The free agent market is still quiet, the Tigers still need a catcher, and Nick Castellanos doesn't seem to be going anywhere. We touched on these and a host of other topics. Truck Day brings warm vibes. The Tigers ended the Big D experiment.Danny McClain's Cy Young award went to auction, and Kirk Gibson is now a special assistant to Al Avila.Nick Castellanos is primed for a good year.Niko Goodrum needs to seize his opportunity.Stop this madness and sign a catcher, Tigers.Keith Law isn't impressed with the Tigers farm system.Arbitration wins, and a record arb eligible one-year deal for Nolan Arenado may point the way beyond the free agent freeze.
