Kanye's Controversial Comments on Virgil Abloh Feb 22, 2025
    Show notes

In this clip from Black Out with Ian & Rashad, Ian Dunlap and Rashad Bilal dive deep into the recent controversy surrounding Kanye West's comments on the late Virgil Abloh. Ian and Rashad unpack the implications of Kanye's remarks, discussing the ethics and emotional complexities of expressing negativity toward someone posthumously.

Ian Dunlap, reflecting on his observations and past discussions, criticizes Kanye's actions, highlighting the perceived jealousy and hypocrisy. He questions why Kanye would disparage Virgil after his passing when they were supposedly friends. Rashad Bilal, while agreeing on the importance of showing respect to those who have passed, acknowledges that deep-seated feelings and animosities can sometimes persist even after death.

The discussion shifts toward broader issues surrounding Kanye, touching on his mental health, provocative actions, and the impact of his statements on his public image. Ian points out the potentially detrimental effects of Kanye's behavior on his personal life, particularly his relationship with his children and ex-wife.

Toward the end of the clip, they discuss the complexities of Kanye's mental state, with Rashad suggesting that some of Kanye's actions may stem from mental illness. However, Ian challenges this notion, stating that Kanye might be using his mental health as an excuse for erratic behavior when convenient.

Join Ian and Rashad as they explore the fine line between creative genius and controversial provocateur, and discuss the ramifications of Kanye's actions within the broader context of his illustrious career.

    **Transcript:**

Rashad Bilal [00:00:00]: What about this Virgil situation?

Ian Dunlap [00:00:07]: Well, I think a lot of people knew that they didn't have the best relationship but that Kanye said a lot of crazy the last two weeks on Twitter since he been back and got banned or whatever. But like the subtle hate and I brought this up a couple years ago on market Mondays, but. And I appreciate the people in Chicago who have checked him on us like Bump J and others. But it's like how are you hating on somebody that you were friends with in death now the jealousy was rampant as hell when he was alive. But why say it? Like, I just think it's in. In poor taste to. And you don't got to be best friends. But I think, and I know being from the Midwest, it may be hypocritical for me to say I don't engage in it.

Ian Dunlap [00:00:58]: But the post post death dissing, I think that needs to stop. I think that needs to stop. Back to 50 and IRV. I think it was unnecessary. I think he was unnecessary. But like we don't talk about it because Kanye is who he is. He's icon. Back to being a billionaire.

Ian Dunlap [00:01:15]: I'm happy for it. I know you're a big fan of Kanye and I was too at a certain point. But Kanye is a very jealous hearted person when it comes to some people and I hated to see this play out because I think Kanye is too important to the black lexicon of business people and creatives in this era. But what do you think about it?

Rashad Bilal [00:01:42]: Yeah, but you know, of course you should, you should extend grace to people that's not here anymore for sure. But sometimes beef is everlasting even in, even in death. Like, you know, that's the harsh reality of life too sometimes. Like you know, sometimes, sometimes your, your feelings towards the person still carries over.

Ian Dunlap [00:02:01]: How you take them easy designs from him, rock them as yours and then say him post death. Let's just be honest. Like you was upset at the Little Louis that he got. Why I get. But if it's not real, we shed blood. My people were looking for your people. Is it really that serious? You would say that any too. When they slammed you in your head and put you in a trash can back in the day, Virgil was supposed to be your guy.

Ian Dunlap [00:02:37]: Like what? That's crazy. Or say the hate when you always fake hugging at the fashion show. That's. I don't like the fake hate. If you don't with somebody just say no, no, I'll with him. Yeah, what's the better brand off white or easy? And he got A swastika tee out all that. See,...

    Is Valentine's Day a Financial Trap? Feb 21, 2025
    Show notes

In this clip of "Black Out with Ian & Rashad," hosts Rashad Bilal and Ian Dunlap delve into the contentious topic of Valentine's Day. Is it just a capitalist scam, or does it hold genuine value? The conversation kicks off with Rashad questioning the commercialization of Valentine's Day, asking if it is the biggest scam in America [00:00:00]. Ian responds by comparing it to other societal "scams" like Social Security and college, placing Valentine's Day in the top 20 [00:00:36].

Ian shares his thoughts on how every day should be a celebration of love, not just one overpriced day [00:00:50]. He admits to celebrating Valentine's Day but criticizes typical gestures like roses and chocolates as overdone [00:00:54]. Rashad and Ian then dive into the absurdity of overpriced Valentine's Day gifts like chocolate-dipped strawberries and edible arrangements [00:01:23]. Ian jokes about the "side chick day" on February 15th, an unofficial, universally acknowledged day that follows Valentine's Day [00:02:17].

The hosts also touch upon the importance of effort and thoughtfulness in relationships, highlighting how convenience often comes with a high price tag [00:03:21]. They discuss the American way of capitalizing on laziness and lack of effort, pointing out that better planning could save money and enhance experiences [00:04:11].

The clip takes an interesting turn as the hosts ponder whether you need to ask someone to be your Valentine and if going on a date automatically makes someone your Valentine [00:04:21]. They caution against doing too much and risking disappointment or being used for a free meal [00:04:56].

In a more serious segment, Ian and Rashad discuss the financial drain that some relationships can impose [00:05:24]. They advise letting go of relationships that are financially unsustainable, emphasizing the importance of mutual growth and financial contribution [00:05:49]. They stress the need for a partner who brings joy and value, thereby justifying the investment of time and resources [00:06:30].

Ian offers a litmus test for evaluating relationships: assess the impact on your financial and personal growth [00:06:59]. They caution against leading with financial offers in relationships, especially in entrepreneurial circles where people are often used for their resources [00:07:37].

Wrapping up, the hosts encourage open, honest conversations about financial strain in relationships, urging listeners to seek balance and mutual benefit [00:08:38].

Is the American Dream Dead? Feb 02, 2025
    Show notes

Welcome to the latest clip of *Black Out with Ian & Rashad* where hosts Ian Dunlap and Rashad Bilal dive deep into a topic that touches everyone's lives: Is the American Dream dead? 🏡💭

From the foundational myths of upward mobility to the harsh realities of today's economic landscape, Rashad and Ian dissect the very fabric of what many believe to be the "dream." Rashad opens the discussion by recognizing the appeal of America for entrepreneurs and go-getters. Yet, he quickly transitions to a sobering critique of the societal norms that portray a middle-class life as the pinnacle of success. He argues that the idea of attaining the American Dream by simply working hard and climbing the economic ladder is a myth.

Rashad highlights the structural issues within the mortgage system, explaining how the banking system manipulates the concept of homeownership. He points out how the vast majority of Americans are buying homes they can't afford, leading to catastrophic outcomes such as mortgage defaults and long-term debt. He underscores the fact that most Americans live paycheck to paycheck, making them one step away from financial ruin and even homelessness.

Ian then shifts the focus to the broader implications of this crisis. He questions who the American Dream is really for and posits that while it may be dead for the average citizen, it's very much alive for financial institutions. Ian paints a stark picture of the middle class's erosion, driven by ever-increasing debts—from credit card bills to student loans.

Both hosts draw a connecting line from individual debt to societal control, pointing out how actual wages have stagnated while the cost of living has skyrocketed. They reveal a troubling reality where most people can't afford basic necessities without relying on more debt, making the notion of the American Dream more of a nightmare for many.
