    Big Band Serenade Presents The King's Men Radio Show Apr 28, 2012

    The Radio Show is from 9/6/1949. The King's Men quartet was comprised of Ken Darby, arranger & bass; Rad Robinson baritone; Jon Dodson, lead tenor; Bud Linn, top tenor. Formed in Hollywood in 1929, they took their name from a radio sponsor named King. Their first engagement was as a singing foursome in the Paramount film "Sweetie." This led to other films and radio contracts. When the Boswell Sisters left Los Angeles station KFWB in 1932, the King's Men replaced them for two years. For fifteen years the King's Men were regulars on the "Fibber McGee and Molly" broadcasts.

    This Johnny Mercer's Music Shop is from 8/2/1944. On the radio he sang with Benny Goodman and had his own shows, including "Johnny Mercer's Music Shop." Greatly admired in the music industry both personally and for his intelligent, optimistic lyrics, he wrote or co-wrote over 1,100 songs, including "Blues in the Night," "That Old Black Magic," "One For My Baby, "Come Rain or Come Shine" (all with Harold Arlen); "Lazy Bones" and "Skylark" with Hoagy Carmichael; "I'm a Old Cowhand," "I Remember You," "P.S. I Love You," "Jeepers Creepers," "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby," "When a Woman Loves a Man," "Too Marvelous for Words," and "Fools Rush In."


    Big Band Serenade Presents B A Rolfe and His Orchestra Radio Show Apr 14, 2012

    This B A Rolfe radio show is from 6/29/1934 In 1935-36, Rolfe was the leader of The Goodrich Silvertown Orchestra. His radio broadcasts ran until the late 1930s during which time he and his orchestra played music with the sponsorship of Believe It or Not! on NBC. Rolfe also narrated the shows, providing an on-air description of a Robert Ripley tale of wonder. With the onset of World War II, Rolfe organized an all-female orchestra to perform patriotic songs.

    The Andrews Sisters were the most sought-after entertainment property in theater shows worldwide during the 1940s and early 1950s, always topping previous house averages.They hosted their own radio shows for ABC and CBS from 1944–1951, singing specially-written commercial jingles for such products as Wrigley's chewing gum, Dole pineapples, Nash motor cars, Kelvinator home appliances, Campbell's soups, and Franco-American food products.     This Fred Waring and Orchestra Radio Show is from 8/18/1947. He composed and/or performed dozens of patriotic songs, his most famous being "My America." In 1943, Waring acquired the Buckwood Inn in Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania, and renamed the resort the Shawnee Inn. To promote the Inn, Waring centered his musical activities at the Inn itself. He created, rehearsed and broadcast his radio programs from the stage of Shawnee's Worthington Hall throughout the 1950s.

    Glenn Miller and his Orchestra is fondly remembered as not only one of the best of the big bands of the swing era, but most popular and best-loved bands of World War II. Formed in March 1938, the (second) Glenn Miller Orchestra was famous for several hits, including "In the Mood," and "Pennsylvania 65000."
