The Tenth Commandment and Unhelpful Expectations Sep 06, 2021
    Show notes

While the other commandments address sins that can be seen by others, the tenth commandment tackles covetousness, which hides in the heart. It's in our hearts that unhelpful expectations breed ungodly desires, leading in turn to sin and death. But God sees the heart, and Jesus changes it, giving us a path to righteousness and life.

The Ninth Commandment and Untruthful Speech Aug 24, 2021
    Show notes

The ninth commandment calls us to love our neighbors by addressing one of our smallest but most dangerous members—our tongue. When our speech runs wild, small sparks can create massive fires. But, by controlling our tongue, we can honor our neighbor's good name and breathe life into the world around us.

The Eighth Commandment and Trusting God Aug 09, 2021
    Show notes

The eighth commandment reveals our unbelief and distrust of God. When we perceive that God has made an error in the way he has divvied up his gifts, we sinfully take matter into our own hands to rectify the matter. But Jesus sets a different example, giving up what he rightfully deserved to be generous and loving to his neighbors.

The Seventh Commandment and Honoring Marriage Jul 27, 2021
    Show notes

Whereas the sixth commandment prohibiting murder is one that seems easily kept, the seventh may give us a bit more pause. Even if we haven't been outright adulterous in our relationship, many of us feel great shame because of our failures to remain pure.

Jesus doesn't hold back as he cuts straight to the heart of this commandment, exposing the root of lust that leads to a number of sins. But, he is gracious in his invitation out of shame and through his sacrifice as the spotless lamb who washes us clean.

The Sixth Commandment and Destructive Anger Jul 13, 2021
    Show notes

It's easy when looking at the Ten Commandments to arrive at the sixth word and think, "Whew. Finally one I've obeyed perfectly." Unfortunately for our egos, Jesus says, "Not so fast." When we cut to the heart of this commandment prohibiting murder, we find that perhaps we harbor more anger against others than we care to admit.
