    Episode 066: Atlanta Ghost Jun 04, 2019
    Show notes

In Episode 066 we turn the clock back to Summer 1997 for an exploration of the RAGEFUNK Phish was experimenting with at the peak of their transition towards Fall 1997's fully-realized creative rebirth. With a focus on the massive, 25+ minute "Ghost" the band played on July 23, 1997, we focus on the new style the band was employing within their improvisation, and the impact this had during the first ten days of their Summer 1997 US Tour. In addition, we explore the idea of our favorite bands dropping a song that is such a stark diversion while also opening a new rabbit hole with which to obsess over.

Songs featured in this episode are: The Funkees: "Akpankoro," Shuggie Otis: "Ice Cold Daydream," Wilco: "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart," and Sleater-Kinney: "Entertain"

In addition, we discuss two new 2019 records we highly recommend: Rose City Band: "Rose City Band," and Ex Hex: "It's Real"

Episode 065: Radiohead w/ Myke "Lawn Memo" Menio May 21, 2019
    Show notes

In Episode 065 we deep-dive one of our favorite bands of all time: Radiohead. To do so, we've brought on one of our favorite podcasters, and our good friend, Myke "Lawn Memo" Menio (@lawnmemo) to help us break down their career.

Myke is a longtime Phish fan who's as active as anyone in the Phish-analysis corner of the fanbase. From The Daily Ghost to his recaps of the previous Summer Tour leading up to the next Tour Opener, to his fantastic podcast, The Daily Soundcheck, he's one of the true forces for good in our little universe. In addition, Myke is also a huge Radiohead fan. We had a great time chatting with him about the band, and walking through their discography together. Even if you're a total noob to Radiohead, or a longtime fan as well, there's lots in here to convince all of their greatness.

Songs featured in this episode are: (Intros) "There, There," "The National Anthem," "Morning Bell/Amnesiac" // "Blow Out" - Pablo Honey (1993), "Planet Telex" - The Bends (1995), "Paranoid Android" - OK Computer (1997), "Everything In Its Right Place" - Kid A (2000), "Pyramid Song" - Amnesiac (2001), "2+2=5" - Hail To The Thief (2003), "15 Steps" - In Rainbows (2007), "Separator" - The King Of Limbs (2011), "Decks Dark" - A Moon Shaped Pool (2016)

    Episode 064: Augusta Reba May 07, 2019
    Show notes

In Episode 064 we discuss the dim and expansive version of "Reba" from Augusta, Maine on October 19, 2010. One of the most fascinating & boundary-pushing jams of Fall 2010, this reflected a band that found their weird side again through a two-week tour of Northeastern industrial cities & Minor League Hockey Arenas. One of only four times "Reba" has ever encored, this capped off a really fascinating show that saw the band toying with their setlist and jamming with purpose, a clear turning point in early-3.0.

Songs featured in this episode are: Neil Young & Crazy Horse: "Change Your Mind," The Strokes: "Happy Ending," Dizzy Gillespie: "Salt Peanuts," "Cool Breeze"

In addition, we discuss two new 2019 records we highly recommend: Fennesz: "Agora," and The Chemical Brothers: "No Geography"

Episode 062: Deeper Into Tengo w/ Jesse Jarnow Apr 23, 2019
    Show notes

In Episode 062 we're joined by Jesse Jarnow (@bourgwick) to discuss one of our favorite bands of all time: Yo La Tengo. We've long wanted to dive deep into the history, live show experience, B-Sides, influences, and enduring legacy of Yo La Tengo, and were stoked to sit down with one of our favorite writers, radio hosts, and fellow Osiris Podcaster (Alternate Routes) for the episode.

No matter if you're casually curious, woefully ignorant, or a longtime fan of the trio from Hoboken, there's more than enough here for all of you. Jesse is a phenomenal guide through the world of Yo La Tengo. Within this episode we cover their nearly-annual Hanukkah shows, the formation and arc of their career, Ira Kaplan's Dead fandom, their live shows, partnership with comedians, and much more.

Songs featured in this episode are: Yo La Tengo: "Deeper Into Movies," "Sugarcube," "Green Arrow," "The Love Life Of The Octopus," "By The Time It Gets Dark," "Everyday," "The Story of Jazz," (Maxwell's - 12/10/2012) "Two Trains," "Sister Ray" (Maxwell's - 12/10/2012), Grateful Dead: "Playing In The Band" - 08/06/1974, Condo Fucks: "What'cha Gonna Do About It"

    - - -

If you liked this episode, please check out, in addition to Alternate Routes, Jesse's Radio Show of WFMU, The Frow Show, which airs from 12–3am every Monday Night. If you can't stay up every week for the live airing, you can also revisit it in the WFMU App.

In addition, Jesse is the author of three great books we'd encourage you to check out: Big Day Coming - Yo La Tengo & The Rise of Indie Rock, Heads - A Biography of Psychedelic America, and Wasn't That A Time - The Weavers, the Blacklist, and the Battle for the Soul of America.

Episode 061: You Gotta Heal w/ Tim Showalter Apr 16, 2019
    Show notes

In Episode 061 we're joined by one of our favorite songwriters, Tim Showalter, the beating heart of Strand Of Oaks, for a wide-ranging conversation about his Phish fandom, his overall career arc, the music that's influenced him, favorite brands of seltzer, and what he's been listening to recently. If you've ever been moved by his music, you will certainly find a ton to sink your teeth into here. If you've never heard Strand Of Oaks, you're in for a treat as Tim's music is something of an amalgamation of everything we love here at BTP.

Songs featured in this episode are: Strand Of Oaks: "Goshen '97," "Ruby," "Shut In," "JM," "Weird Ways," Phish: "Down With Disease" - Camden, NJ 08/07/2018, Talk Talk: "Eden," Songs Ohia: "The Old Black Hen"

Episode 060: Kiel Auditorium Dark Star w/ Jonathan Hart Apr 02, 2019
    Show notes

In Episode 060 we're joined once again by Jonathan Hart (@rowj), host of the Brokedown Podcast (@BrokdownPod) to discuss our very first Grateful Dead jam, the "Dark Star" from the Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis, MO, on October 30, 1973. An overlooked jam from a phenomenal tour, this features a full "Mind Left Body Jam," and a jamming approach that emphasizes lucid dreaming and melodic beauty in its nearly 30-minutes.

Songs featured in this episode are: Steve Gunn: "Way Out Weather," Underworld: "Jumbo," Elkhorn: "Lion," Mountains: "Sand," The Sea & Cake: "I Missed The Glance," Daniel Bachman: "Invocation"

In addition, we discuss three new 2019 records we highly recommend: Dave Harrington Group: "Pure Imagination, No Country," FEELS: "Post Earth," and Larry Ochs/Nels Cline/Gerald Cleaver: "What Is To Be Done"

    Episode 059: Pete's Phabulous Curtain With Mar 19, 2019
    Show notes

In Episode 059 we step back to 1988 to discuss a fascinating version of "The Curtain With." Featuring a disjointed swirling guitar jam, a legitimate "Dave's Energy Guide," and a preview of the ways in which Phish would break from their song structures to craft wholly original music in a live setting within five years time. The second-to-last "Curtain With" before its 1178 show hibernation, also the second-to-last Phish show before the band would travel to Colorado for their first residency outside of the Northeast, we hear the band growing in a show that served as a model for the massive festivals they'd be hosting within a decade.

Songs featured in this episode are: Gunn-Truscinki Duo: "Gunter," Matt Lajoie: "Plane of Return," Talk Talk: "The Rainbow," Sonic Youth: "Eric's Trip"

In addition, we discuss two new 2019 records we highly recommend: Nate Wooley: "Columbia Icefield," and Ladytron: "Ladytron"
