    Behind The Break

Behind The Break was the first clay target podcasts produced with hosts Justin Barker, Kevin DeMichiel, and Alex Clark. This trio changed the way the sport was advertised, promoted, and brought into the homes of families across the world. The show is not currently in production anymore but some of the episodes are too good not to share.

Gil Ash - OSP Shooting School Mar 20, 2019
    Show notes

Shooting, whether it be sporting clays, skeet, trap, or birds, comes naturally to Gil who has been shooting for over 44 years. An avid hunter and fisherman since early childhood, Gil demonstrates an unparalleled passion for shooting, and the psychology behind it. He has won numerous titles in both skeet and sporting clay competitions and has taught professionally since 1984. He was also an instructor for the Holland & Holland Shooting School of England and has studied with many great shooters and instructors. He has been featured on ESPN, TNN and hosted a regular spot on the television show “Pull–America’s Great Gun Clubs” on the Outdoor Life cable channel. Known worldwide, Gil has six shooting videos currently sold in the United States and two sold in England and Australia. His quick eye has served him well both on the range and behind the camera. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business and photography and had a professional photography studio for 23 years, serving clients such as Exxon, Dow Chemical, Dupont, Honeywell and Compaq Computers to name a few. Gil displays a contagious passion for shooting and uses a “no-bull” approach to get to the essence of his students’ shooting problems and solutions. His ability to communicate with visual simplicity, as well as his sense of humor and general love of people are what make him “quite a character” and a terrific model for his students. In 1989, Gil encountered a shoulder injury that restricted his shooting for two years. His passion for the game drove him to discover his real passion which was teaching others not only how to become better shots but better people as well. Although his shoulder is not 100%, if he is not teaching or fishing you will likely find him shooting clays or birds somewhere around the world.

Rich is a true artisan with a lifetime devotion to the craft of gunsmithing. Growing up in Washington D.C. in the late 60s and early 70s, with no video games to waste the days away, his spent free time building models and other hands-on projects of his generation. Rich was introduced to basic mechanics and machine tool theory and operation as a youth by his dad, who was a scientist at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics lab and a gunsmithing hobbyist.

From there, he bounced back and forth between working Beretta’s Accokeek Maryland location and apprenticing in Gardone Val Trompia, Italy. His stints in Gardone offered extensive training on the 680 series shotgun, which to this day remains a tried and true favorite. Since that time, he has built a career spanning more than 30 years.

Rich has had the opportunity to work on a number of fine guns made by elite gun makers. Discriminating gun owners trust their fine firearms to Cole’s expertise. If a certain repair or stocking job is outside of his bailiwick, Rich will try to refer clients to a trusted colleague. Rich is passionate about working with customers to select the right gun for their needs, achieve proper fit, and provide ongoing service to ensure proper function for years to come. With his extensive knowledge of a wide variety of the world’s best shotguns, at the end of the day, Rich still believes that the basic Perazzi MX and Beretta 680 series are among the best lines of guns on the market. Mark Winser Jan 30, 2019
    Show notes

Mark actually got into shooting by accident when he was 12 years old. He didn't come from a shooting background at all, so when his dad was invited to go clay shooting by a friend, he asked if Mark could go in his place instead. It was literally the first time Mark had ever seen a gun; He hadn't even held an air rifle before. But by all accounts Mark was a complete natural – no one believed that he had never shot before – so Mark was encouraged to take it up. His dad started taking him to the local clay ground twice a month as that was all they could afford.

It wasn't long after that. His local clay ground in Essex ran 70-bird competitions on Sundays and almost right away Mark started winning the junior section. After that, His dad and Mark started touring the country, making sure that he entered the England selection shoots. By the time Mark was 15, only three years after he first fired a gun, Mark made the England Sporting junior team. Ever since then, shooting has been his life.

Mark's proudest achievement has to be winning the Stratstone Ultimate One at the Royal Berkshire Shooting School. Mark went home with a brand new Range Rover Autobiography! That competition may never happen again, so it was a bit of a miracle that Mark won it, especially with a score of 25 straight (the next best score was 19)! Mark still has to pinch himself when he thinks about it – it really was an incredible day.

    Pat Lieske Dec 19, 2018
    Show notes

Pat Lieske grew up in Davison, Michigan, a small town just east of Flint. As a youngster, he loved to fish and hunt with his parents and two brothers. Lieske got his first taste of clay target shooting as a teenager, when he attended a hunter's safety class at Williams Gun Sight in Davison. Returning to the clubhouse after trying a few targets, he noticed a flyer on the wall for a skeet shooting league – and signed up to participate. He shot skeet through high school, even delving briefly into the NSSA registered skeet world, while also working as a trapper at Williams. His shooting stopped abruptly though when he enrolled in college, pursuing a Bachelors of Business and Finance at the University of Michigan, Flint. Seven years went by before he picked up a shotgun again – a hiatus that ended with a life changing phone call in 1989. “One of my old friends invited me out to shoot the new game called sporting clays...” It’s interesting to speculate what his life course would have been, had he not had that call.

Upon graduation, Lieske put his college degree to work by taking a job at a local CPA firm–a position that lasted five years. His wife Karen was pregnant with their first child when they came to another crossroads and made a huge life decision. “My wife quit her job to be a full time Mom, and I quit my job to be a full time shooting instructor,” he said. He worked a while at a small private hunt club as shooting instructor and sporting clays coordinator, using heavy equipment to expand and make improvements to the course while steadily building a reputation as an instructor. A stint as a freelance-shooting instructor followed, after leaving the employ of the hunt club to strike out on his own. Growing weary of all the traveling required as an instructor without a home base, in October 2002, Lieske took over the shotgun ranges at Island Lake Shooting Range in Brighton, Michigan, when the State Department of Natural Resources sought a new concessionaire. With the DNR’s confidence in him quickly established, Lieske soon also took over the rifle and pistol facilities. In 2009 his contract was up for renewal. He bid on and was awarded a 20 year contract that also included another state owned facility – Bald Mountain Shooting Range in Lake Orion – a one hour drive from Island Lake.

Since 2009, Lieske has built the two ranges, collectively called Michigan Shooting Centers, into Michigan’s pre-eminent sporting clays destinations. Pat’s facilities have hosted countless major championships including five Michigan State Championships, one Zone region championship and a Team USA qualifier. The entire Lieske family – wife Karen, sons Drew and Gage and even Pat’s mother – can, from time to time, be seen pitching in at the two facilities.

The Lieske’s older son, 19-year-old Drew, is a freshman at Hillsdale College and was awarded the NSCA college scholarship for 2014. A member of the Hillsdale College Shotgun Sports team, Drew took all honors classes and AP courses in high school and graduated valedictorian with a GPA of 4.09. A computer expert, Drew owns a website design firm, Dead Pair Designs, that manages shooting related websites, including the Kids & Clays® Foundation, the Ohio Sporting Clays Association and the Michigan Shooting Centers among others. He also serves on the Michigan Sporting Clays Association board of directors and manages their website. The Lieske’s younger son, Gage, is 12 years old and is the quiet kid sometimes seen driving around in a shooting cart, handing out free ice cream at the large events held at MSC.

Some of Pat's most notable wins include 2014 NSCA National Sporting Clays Champion, 2014 NSCA National FITASC Champion, 2012 World Sporting Clays Championship Runner- Up and 2009 North American FITASC Champion. He was inducted into the Michigan Sporting Clays Hall of Fame in 2013 and into the National Sporting Clays Association Hall of Fame in 2014. In total, Pat has over 30 years of experience in the shooting sports industry.
