    165. How to Help Struggling Readers in Your Classroom Mar 16, 2022
    Show notes

One of the most challenging parts of teaching is knowing how to support your students who are struggling with reading. This is especially prevalent right now, as we're all experiencing massive gaps because of everything that children have been through with COVID. There has been lots of virtual learning from home, and that means that kids may not have gotten the level of support and reading instruction that they need.

So, if we have these huge gaps, how can we plan our literacy instruction to meet the needs of all students, especially our struggling readers? As our guest Alison Ryan says, the first step is believing you can. Alison and I are going to be talking all about what to do when you first notice that one, or maybe many, of your students are struggling with reading.

    163. How to Create a Calm-Down Corner in Your Classroom (& Ensure It Works) Mar 09, 2022
    Show notes

It's tough being a kid and learning how to navigate big emotions like sadness, anger, frustration, stress, and disappointment. I'm sure you've noticed that some of your students have a more difficult time than others when it comes to processing these types of emotions. We all have those students who have really big tempers, or become upset easily. Having a special space in your classroom where students can go to work through their emotions safely is a game-changer. I like to call this space a calm-down corner, and it does not need to be anything fancy! Today I'm sharing how to set up a calm-down corner and how to prepare your students to use it in a useful way.

In episode 159, I broke down what natural consequences are and I gave you some specific examples of how this works in your classroom. If you haven't listened to that episode, I highly recommend that you go back and listen to that first because it is going to give you a foundation to what I'm discussing today! It's important to be prepared to implement natural consequences, but what do you do if you have a student who continues to be disruptive, despite all your efforts? It might be time for some new strategies. Today I'm going to give you some very specific examples of how you can move from gentle reminders to firm consequences while you're teaching inside your classroom.
