Episode 175: Second Sin Brewing (or Broccoli Rabe Sandwich) Sep 08, 2019
    Show notes

In the space that once housed Broken Goblet, we set up shop at the soon-to-open Second Sin Brewing Company in Bristol, PA. With CEO Mike Beresky, Facilities Manager Phil Harris, and Head Brewer Jake Howell, we chatted about where these three came from, how they decided to open a brewery, what Second Sin will look like, and much more. In the news, Dan reported on the acquisition of Platform Brewing by AB-InBev (it was fresh news when we actually recorded this). Wayne hosted a round of There’s Weird in My Beer in Happy Fun Time. And, Steph continued her Know Your Hops series with Part…8?! Also, we drank beer. It was good. Keep your eyes peeled for when Second Sin officially opens their doors, Facebook is probably a good place to start. Plus, in our Patron-exclusive bonus segment, Last Call, we drank some really…interesting (Patron provided) beers. Support us on Patreon to get the inside scoop.

Episode 174: Levante Brewing (or Every Beer is Many Beers) Aug 25, 2019
    Show notes

We return once again to Levante Brewing in West Chester, PA and the usual madness ensues. Joining us are President Tim Floros, CMO Jim Adams, Head Brewer Greg Harris, and Brewer and Brand Coordinator Spencer Holm. In a secret back office we plowed through cases upon cases of delicious Levante cans while discussing exciting new beers, collaborations, beer delivery, and some rather uncouth things about muppets and much more. Plus, we sampled the new line up of really tasty seltzers (all the cool kids are doing it) released under the name ReVibe. In Happy Fun Time, Wayne hosted a round of Bad Beer Reviews. And, Steph continues her one-thousand-part series on hops in Know Your Beers. This one is off the rails from the jump – you’ll laugh, you’ll cringe, but you’ll also learn a thing or two…we promise.

Episode 173: Victory Brewing (or Making Memories) Aug 09, 2019
    Show notes

This one’s been a long time coming. We finally made it to one of Pennsylvania’s best known breweries (and one of our long-time favorites), Victory Brewing Company. At the original Downingtown location with founder and owner Bill Covaleski, we talked about the history of Victory, exciting new innovations, the past, present, and future of craft beer, and so much more. Tap room Head Chef Jeremy Hammond lead us through some beer pairings with new brews and new dishes, and talked about the experience at Victory. Plus, we dug deep into the packaging design and marketing with Senior Graphic Designer Bobby Zwahlen, and ruminated on how this cornerstone of the beer world has shaped our palettes and lives with long time super-fan Justin Grilli. In Happy Fun Time, Wayne hosted a round of Libation or Fabrication: Backstory Edition. And, in Know Your Beers, Steph taught us all about the beauty of the Slow Pour.

Episode 172: Rebel Hive Meadery (or A Nice Little Hug) Jul 26, 2019
    Show notes

Once again we bravely tread outside our comfort zone, this time with an episode all about mead. Rebel Hive Meadery is a newly-established, award-winning mead-making outfit, headed by husband and wife team Ryan and Meghan Ludwig. At their new production facility (to include a future tap room) housed in a beautifully restored location in Reading, PA, we sat down with the pair to sample their amazing honey-based libations and chat about the business, their history, and the world of mead. This episode was recorded with a pretty long lead time before release, so rather than bring you old news, Dan forwent the news altogether – giving us more time to bask in the rare occasion to learn about a product we are relatively unfamiliar with. Continuing with the theme of booze beyond beer, Wayne hosted a round of There’s Weird in My…Wine in Happy Fun Time Games. And Steph shared some tips on making mead at home (home-meading?) from BYO Magazine.

    Episode 171: Ephrata Brewfest Jul 12, 2019
    Show notes

Another Ephrata Brewfest, another beautiful sunny day at Whistle Stop Plaza. We’ve been to every Ephrata Brewfest since it debuted in 2016, but this year we recorded a podcast on site for the first time! Joined by many old friends from the amazing breweries in attendance, as well as several new-comers to the show, we got to chat and sample some incredible brews. The show kicks off with Patrick Reed, one of the fest’s founders, and the good times continue to roll all day. There are so many beer festivals out there, and we are lucky to be able to pick and choose the best to bring to your ears. This is definitely one of the good ones and we can’t wait to return next year. If you want to check out our adventures from past Ephrata Brewfests, you can eye up our photo galleries and past coverage here.

    Show notes

It’s summertime and that means Beer Busters heads “down the shore” to return to Cape May Brewing Company in beautiful Cape May, New Jersey. Returning to the show is long-time friend and podcast veteran, Mark Graves, now serving as Packaging Manager for the brewery. Joining Mark is new-comer and Cape May Head of Innovation, Brian Hink. We catch up with what’s been happening at Cape May since our last visit in late 2016, including exciting collaborations, expansion plans, lots of new brews, and more. In the news, Dan reports on more changes to New Jersey state law that are putting craft breweries in a tough spot. Wayne hosts a new game in Happy Fun Time, pitting real hazy IPA names against computer-generated ones, courtesy of Craft Beer and Brewing Magazine. And Steph continues her deep dive into hop varieties in Know Your Beer.

Joining us were friend-of-the-show and Saucony Founder/Owner Kirby Powell and Head Brewer Nick Micio. Also, stepping up to the mics later in the evening were Sales Rep Jeff Fulmer, Executive Chef Martha Cavarretta, and General Manager Robin Pritz. In the news, Dan reported on the return of Reading Premium Beer (revived by Sly Fox) and some sobering news regarding the Brewers Association top 50 breweries. Wayne hosted a new hybrid game, Is There Weird in My Beer? in Happy Fun Time. And Steph continued her Know Your Hops series with more “c” hops – but not the ones you’re thinking of. All the while we sipped on some fine Saucony Creek offerings.

Episode 168: Hop Hedz Hangar Jam Live May 31, 2019
    Show notes

Our friends at Hop Hedz Gear put together an insane music and extreme sports event so intense it could only be contained in an airport hangar at Capital City Airport in New Cumberland, PA. Featuring live performances by some of the nation’s top BMX bike stunt riders from BMX Trickstars, and local skateboarding teams, along with food, booze, and an amazing lineup of music acts, this was a party only the Hop Hedz crew could have thrown. Performers included Drew & the Blue, Gallowglas, Anthrophobia, and the nation’s #1 Beastie Boys Tribute Band – The Brass Monkeys. In between jamming to the tunes, we got to sit down and catch up with some old friends in the house, and meet some new faces. This event was epic, a hell of a time, and we hope it turns into an annual thing, we will definitely be back.

Episode 167: Little Big Beer Fest 2019 May 17, 2019
    Show notes

Another Harrisburg Beer Week has come and gone, and that means another Little Big Beer Fest! For the fifth year running, we return as podcasters-in-residence for this incredible jewel in the HBG Beer Week crown that features a limited array of high-ABV beers. As usual, our guests include a roster of longtime friends of the show with a few new faces sprinkled in. Beer Busters would not be what it is today without the support of all of these fine folks, the breweries they call home, and – of course – the wonderful people that founded the ever-expanding beer week in our state capitol. This event is one we look forward to every year, and it is always an amazing time. Great beer, great food, great people. Need we say more?

Episode 166: Schaylor Brewing (or A Cardboard Box and a Magnifying Glass) May 03, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode we hit up Schaylor Brewing Company in Shillington, PA to chat with Co-Owners Joe and Lucan. Opened in early 2018, Schaylor proudly “brews outside the lines,” featuring a range of unique brews from fruited sours to stouts infused with breakfast cereal. We chatted about the brewery’s history, philosophy, upcoming plans and more. In the news Dan reported on the closure of two Ballast Point locations and other cutbacks at the Constellation-owned brewery, and we stifle tears as we talk about the imminent closure of Saint Benjamin Brewing in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. Their last day of operations is literally the day after this episode releases, if you are local and have the time, we highly encourage you to stop by this awesome spot while it’s still around. Onto lighter affairs, Wayne hosted a round of Libation or Fabrication in Happy Fun Time. And Steph continues her blockbuster franchise with Know Your Hops Part 4. All of this, and more, as we sip flights from some of the coolest flight paddles on earth.

PATRONS! The Happy Fun Time Punishments continue! This time around the loser is left with “mixed feelings.” Stay tuned to Patreon the Monday after this episode drops to catch the video, and be sure to listen to Last Call for the build-up and aftermath. Plus, we make the mature and responsible decision to sample some whiskeys in this Last Call, so…that’s fun.
